VideoSift 5.0 Launch!

It's been over three years since we've had a major number release of VideoSift. As VideoSift becomes a richer, feature-laden community - it becomes harder to change. This is inherent in all software; websites are no exception. So this is a big one. If the current exponential gap between major releases continues - we may have VideoSift 5 for the next 20 years. ;-)

So it has to be great - and I think it is. We start with almost all of the features from the previous version and add some polish - throw in a great new UI and make things work better for mobile. But wait … there's more!

@lucky760 has completely rewritten the way the code behind commenting, logging on and invocations work. It's cleaner, quicker and just plain works better.

We're also happy to add some new badges that are going to be a lot of fun - and useful.

Talent Scout:

Talent scout is awarded to Sifters who find videos that are new or not yet a big deal on the wider Internet. There's a little secret sauce in the formula but if you submit something that most people haven't seen yet, you'll be in the running for this one.

Relatividdy:

We've added a new invocation called *related. It's very simple to use. If you find a VideoSift post (and by post I mean video, Sift Talk, or blog post) with content that is related to another post, just invoke related like this: *related=http://videosift.com/video/Crystal-Blue-Persuasion

Queue Angel:

Awarded to Sifters who help out quality new videos in need, flying below the radar, and assisting new Sifters, trying to lose their P. More secret sauce here, but having Sifters working in the queue is good for the Sift and good for surfacing great videos that maybe aren't getting the love they deserve.

Other changes:
  • The maximum number of Power Points you can accumulate is based on your years of membership. E.g., 5 years on the Sift = 5 Power Points limit. You can always buy more Power Points than your limit.
  • You can now transfer your Power Points to other members, limited by the recipient’s Power Point limit.
  • If you have at least a Bronze Star, you can now submit video from any source; you are no longer limited to the list of approved hosts, and you can submit iframes from any host.
  • The most recent three *promoted videos now stay at the top of the front page. When a new video is promoted, the oldest of the top three is cycled out.
  • Blogs now reside on your profile, however they can be *promoted into Sift Talk.
  • All custom styling for channels and profiles has been reset (sorry guys). Charters can use the new profile customizer, but channels cannot be stylized for now. We'll try and get something going for this in an upcoming release.
  • We've moved channels from subdomains to sub-directories. E.g., it is now videosift.com/happy instead of happy.videosift.com
  • Likewise, we've had to remove subdomains from charter memberships, but your last known subdomain will forward to your current profile.
  • We've simplified Charter membership pricing. It’s now only $9 for 1 month and $7 for a recurring monthly subscription. You can now gift a Charter membership directly on a deserving Sifter's profile, with a single click.
  • You can expand video descriptions inline on listing pages.
  • *Amazon and all related features have been removed.

Lastly I just need to thank a few people. Thanks to Ragnar Jarve who did the incredible new design (I love the dark). Thank you to PSD2HTML who converted Ragnar's design to a responsive web app that works great on iPads, iPhones, and Android devices. Lastly, thanks to my partner, the inimitable @lucky760 AKA Rommel Santor for all of the development and another great release, especially when juggling a newborn bub.

We've opened up the usual bugs thread here. Please report any bugs you find while using our new VideoSift.

PS: FIRST! And congrats on another great update. I can't wait to take it apart and make obvious suggestions that are harder than I know are harder to implement than it seems obviously challenging to me.

how is the "current users" thing calculated at the side? I can't see any pattern. It's not Alphabetical, it's not vote low to high / high to low, so I'm curious.

Yeah that's a little bit messed up at the moment.

Shepppard said:

doogle says...

a few things initially:
1) I can't see comments unless I click on the video's page. I really liked seeing comments inset on the sift scroll.
2) I can't "minimize" the video. This is necessary, as some videos load, and I queue them on the page, some take longer or I don't want them to load while others are loading, or I don't want them to load anymore after determining I don't want them to load as I load others.
3) Please tell me I can see longer descriptions ajax-style without needing to see the video's dedicated VideoSift page.

All in all, I love the style of Videosift v5. Any snapshots out there of what V1 and v2 looked like? I'm nostalgic.

Shepppard says...

I'm using the black version, where did that come from? >.>;

Also, is everything you've said so far been /sarcastic? Or is that just the colour of the new text?

dag said:

Quote hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Everyone has to try the dark version. Once you go black, you may seriously never go back.

Shepppard says...

Edit is a little paintbrush looking thing in the top right side of your own comment now. where "quote" is for others comments.

and FTR, the popout for videos comment sections is in the bottom (right?) hand side of the thumbnail now.

Just doesn't work for the promoted vids

doogle said:

Eeks, I can't "edit" a comment.
My "first" comment way up there could be, in retrospect, so much more poignant.

Shepppard says...

Man, I feel like I keep harping on 5.0, but I really gotta say that I don't like the promote system now at all.

I promoted a video about 20 minutes ago, and it's about to be bumped out any second now.
On a busy day, you may get 5 minutes if others promote at the same time.

on a positive note, I like the new chat system! see? I do like some change!

Shepppard says...

Unintentional comment quoting is fixed.

The user listings in the Talk sidebar are fixed.

@doogle - You can see comments in video listings by clicking the little icon under the video. You can "minimize" the video by clicking "minimize" once it's expanded in a listing. You can expand video descriptions inline on video listing pages without loading the video page.

@dotdude - Lounge is under the Sift Talk tab now. Existing charters need do nothing.

This is all from @lucky760 on the bug thead. Not sure how to take a quote from there and put it here now.

Me thinks you mean lighten. Every charter looks like they've got /sarcasm clicked right now on night time mode, darkening it would only make it worse.

Ah , well I wasn't expecting this! What is that, parchment in the background? Or my crazy monitor again?

I like a refresh but it will take time to bed in with me.

In the meantime I do worry about the teeny channel labels and hard to see text. Speaking for the elderly and hard of seeing this is a concern.

Showing only the last 3 promoted videos? Hmmm....

Also no love for channel owners? Was hoping to see some new features there. And I can't see how to find new channel submissions. Clicking on a channel shows the latest videos but Upcoming just shows everything.

Are the old RSS feeds broken?

I would also like a *complete* listing of all videos on a channel.

Also there are filtering options for Upcoming videos but none for sifted ones. Said it before we need easy filtering options whenever there is a list of videos.

dag says...

Hey Deano - old school Sifter - thanks for the feedback.

We've already gotten some compounding feedback that the text size might be an issue for us gray beards - it's definitely something we can look at tweaking.

I know you won't be alone on giving us flack on the three promoted videos - but let's see how we go. The downside of the unlimited promotes is that we sometimes, during peak hours had a wall full of them. We need to strike a balance.

Channel features and filtering is something that will trickle in as we bed down the new site.

I should add my congratulations to what must have been a huge effort to revamp the site.

BTW I just had an idea - I saw something neat on the revamped Basecamp application by 37Signals.

You can double-click on empty space to instantly jump to the beginning or end of a page. Might be useful for a site with long listings.

Should Talent Scout also be rewarded with power points? Seems like it takes more effort to unearth hidden gems that in turn help differentiate the site and drive more traffic.

Speaking for the semi-old-school sifters, my first impression is very positive. I will try it out more thoroughly when the weekend comes.

One thing I notice: The length information is gone from the video listings and video pages. That would be nice to have back.

i am humbled by the time,energy and dedication you two have brought to this site.
fantastic job!

I like the new look so far, still getting used to it (as I'm sure everyone is)

In the previous version I could hover over my username in the upper right hand of the page and it would give me a drop down menu. It looks like that has been transitioned to the 'My Videosift' button, but not all the previous features are there. I liked it before when the 'Recent Videos' and "Queued Videos' would pop out from that menu when you hovered over them. Now I have to go right into my queue and sifted videos to find this information which takes quite a bit longer. If you could add that feature back in I for one would appreciate it .

Great work @dag and @lucky760, you two never cease to impress me with your dedication to the sift! Cheers

lucky760 says...

Which RSS feeds are you referring to? Please provide an idea so we have something to investigate.

Right- channels should link to their own unsifted and all-time-top videos.

We've never had any filtering for the front page. For that you must use the all-time-top videos listing.

Great job. Ever since VS went from 3.0 to 4.0, the site has looked cluttered. Nice to see a return to a clean and sleek site. My only quibble would be the tiny, tiny text (I'm using Chrome); I can only see it if I'm right in front of my monitor. But I'm sure that will be worked out.

And I agree...black is the new black. My de facto from now on.

This is cool. I am embracing change... though I still go to Digg.com, that was my favorite interweb surprise this year, I like the new Digg way better than the old one because it is completely different and I am glad the Sift is still the Sift.

Anyway, I used to like to be able to click on my name and see how my videos were doing and if there were any new comments, I do not see that here?

Would it be possible to move the sift logo and toolbar up closer to the top and moving the ad inside the page / below the toolbar? Definitely think that would look much better, just looking at for ya guys.

Deano says...

No RSS feeds in particular, just wondering aloud on that one.

I'm not seeing the unsifted link for a channel, could you direct me?

And I was hoping for filtering on the front page and everywhere, would make the site a great deal easier to drill into.

Sarzy says...

Doesn't that effectively kill blogs, then? I know I used to like to be able to click on the blog tab to see what people were posting about, but I'm certainly not going to click on a bunch of people's individual profiles to see if they've posted anything to their blog.

I seem to be the only one talking about this, so obviously no one else really cares, but I'll definitely miss that corner of the sift.

There's obviously something to that opinion as I've heard it from a few people, but it baffles my mind because the thumbnails are *much* larger than they used to be and the little icons aren't any smaller than they used to be.

spoco2 said:

After using it for a bit now, I find the video thumbnails too small and the row of icons underneath them minuscule.

Ok, after checking <a rel="nofollow" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20110204071026/<a rel="nofollow" href="http://videosift.com/">http://videosift.com/">an archive version for comparison... the thumbnails really are bigger... weird, must be something to do with them being framed as they are (which looks great)... don't know about that.

The comment thing though, is valid. In the old version the comment link is quite large text. I NEVER used the icons under the thumbnail, didn't even notice them until now really.

I initially thought you'd removed the ability to comment at all from main page.

I _think_ the solution _may_ be to make the thumbnails 16:9 rather than 4:3, as virtually all content is 16:9 now, so you're getting black bars on everything. And then make the icons under the thumbnail be about half as big again. Or, bring comments out again as a link, because that's what a lot of us go straight for here, the comments to a video.

Hey, my link didn't work, wth? And what is that which it's turned it into in the comment? That's not what I typed, it's stripped the closing quotes from my link and lost the quoted text out of it.

Why not just copy Reddit's way of doing things for the most part but then make the community aspect better?

In the end video sift is shit compared to Reddit when it comes to how much content you can brows quickly and how tidy it is organized.

What video sift does have over Reddit is a more focused community and more focused videos/grouping of videos and persistence of themed organisation , so that's what the new design should most focus on fostering.

I think its also better to have things on separate pages well designed pages , rather than have windows load within windows its a total mess writing this comment I have a comment scroll bar + a comment section scroll bar + the main webpage scroll bar.
Also Gray txt on greyish background ?

Not that it matters I'm not paying for video sift

The promoted videos are displayed in an extremely unappealing way. My eye is drawn only to the thumbnail and not at all to the title which is very small and the color makes it not stand out at all. The title is what makes a video appealing to watch not the thumbnail.Kinda reminds me of some kind of sponsored banner ad( the blue "feature" thing on the thumbnail doesn't help). Something my eyes want to skip and move down to the regular listed videos(which are displayed perfectly).

edit - also cant expand promoted video which makes me not want to click it

Everything else is awesome.

grinter says...

Great work! I'm still finding the changes a bit unsettling, but even good change is usually unsettling, isn't it?
My three criticisms are:
1) The 'top 15 unsifted but soon to expire' list on the side of all unsifted videos was a great way to bring attention to submissions that probably deserve it, before they disappear for ever into P-queue purgatory.
2) If someone went through the trouble of promoting a video in order to share it with the rest of us, it should have a reasonable tenure at the top of the front page. If promoted videos are taking up too much space, perhaps they can have even smaller thumbnails? Although, I think two rows of three videos would fit just fine with the current thumbnail size.
3) The lag I'm experiencing when typing and scrolling the page is maddening. Even typing this one comment has by body burning with frustration. That's not a feeling you want visitors associating with your site, because it will, consciously or subconsciously, train them to avoid VideoSift.

After listening to @eric3579 "bitch and moan" all day, I have a proposal for another fix:
Making the responsive part of the site optional.

Some users like having the same layout on desktop and mobile, because they're old farts, and prefer zooming over scrolling.

I looked through the css to make eric a tiny script he could run to disable it, but I can't disable the mediaqueries, because they are bundled in the different css files.

So here is another quick option
http://toolboxdigital.com/2011/06/making-responsive-web-design-optional/

Or moving all the mediaqueries into a separate file, and not loading that on demand;
i.e. http://videosift.com/?mediaqueries=0

xxovercastxx says...

I do wish a larger embed area could have been accommodated. It would have been nice to get the 853px width (or even 1080px) that Youtube offers without having to click through.

KnivesOut says...

Don't know if anyone cares, but here's my CSS (using stylish to apply it in Chrome) to override the bits I don't care for:
body {
font:1.4em/1.6em Verdana, Arial, sans-serif;
font-weight:500;
}
strong { color:#000 !important; }
div.content { background-color:#FFF !important; }
.home-page {background:#FFF;}
#sidebar{background:#FFF;}

Oh, and I can't help but noticing that you've implemented the feature I requested a long time ago, namely the ability to expand the video description in the video listing without entering the video page itself. Thank you!

Boise_Lib says...

Now that I used it for a while.

1) the eyestrain is killing me.
2) The dropdown list when I would hover over my name on the frontpage was always the first thing I did. I hope that can be brought back. Unsifted videos with the number of votes and comments, and the recent vids too.
3) I miss the list of stats on my profile page. Standing, Ave. Votes per video, and number of Top fifteen videos, Number One videos. They're still there--D'ohh!

Thanks for listening.

Dang, dang, dang, I really dislike this limit on promoted vids. I don't want to promote if it is going to knock someone else's vid from the front page.

And I am afraid that I will promote just when two others are promoting, and what the heck happens then?

Seems to me that if you are going to have limits on the promoted vids, then it should be like a sift queue. The limit is three. If you try to promote and there are already three, you get rejected. Otherwise, you aren't assured full value on your power points spent.

I was never bothered by six or seven promoted vids. I am scrolling down anyway. But if you are going to limit it, please don't let Sifters be at the whims of chance when spending their power points.

Sarzy says...

Or perhaps if you're trying to promote a video and there are already three on the front page, your video goes into some kind of soon-to-be-promoted queue, and lands on the front page when one of the current promotes expires.

The only issue I can see with that system would be if there's a long line-up for promotes, you could promote a video only for it to end up on the front page in the middle of the night when no one's around.

Or moving all the mediaqueries into a separate file, and not loading that on demand;
i.e. http://videosift.com/?mediaqueries=0

Yeah, not a fan of the new promoted videos system AT ALL.

1. They aren't visible enough - your eyes are drawn to the bigger, unpromoted videos below.
2. You can waste powerpoints if three other videos are promoted straight after you promote something... and lets face it, in the evenings, the vs 4.0 front page occasionally had 10 promoted videos. So this will happen.

Something needs to change here. This is more than just "getting used to the change".

@Sarzy -- yeah, I thought of the holding queue, too, and really DID NOT like the downside. Sometimes there have been 9 vids promoted at the same time.I would hate to be at the end of that queue.

So. Are we all done pretending we just loooooove the new layout?

Is there any way to make the text even smaller and make the text color even more like the background? That way, I can REALLY struggle to read it. That would be kewl!

The nice thing about a web site is that, unlike a standard piece of software - it's continually tweakable. Based on the feedback from the community we can easily make changes to things like font sizes and colors until we reach the best experience possible. Thanks though - for your ever so constructive feedback.

On chrome, the bottom part of the comments on any given video page are hidden below the bottom bar. This makes it impossible to reply. Maximizing and un-maximizing the window fixes the layout.

Yep - this is an issue from that other fix on the CPU problem. - we'll get it right in the end.

Had to look in this comment thread to figure out where the 'minimize video' link was. Seriously, in the default scheme, that text needs to be a BIT darker... lol.

Good point! The text has been made more visible in both themes.

Thanks!

Possible invocations again misses the opportunity to list everything that can be done and help with more guides as to how to use the various features.

Just then I was trying to second a ban request on a self linker. Sifty said that if the ban was seconded then it would stick... I couldn't remember what one did, possible invocations was no help, didn't list ban or anything, so I tried 'seconded' as that seemed to be the thing to do based on his message, but alas, it was not correct, I just had to ban again.

Big opportunity to make invocations much more user friendly missed I'm afraid.

OK thanks - noted. It's probably just a matter of us needing to include more invocations in that list - the "Possible Invocations" list itself works OK I think.

Yeah, it works ok, except that for invocations that need specific formatting, it could pre-populate with a guide. Like the length one, while it shows you in the tooltip for it what format it needs, it'd be better if it inserted into the text length=HH:MM:SS so you know exactly what and where to type. Same with other ones, like dupeof and the like.

And yeah, it's missing quite a few entries.

Cheers

Used to be able to hover over video titles in the top 15 to read the description, that's gone missing.

There seems to be a huge waste of vertical space in the profile sidebar, just the functional stuff spans three to four pages. Pretty much everything in red in this pic could be cut.

Any chance we are going to see this fixed. Just a reminder @dag @lucky760
