I'll go first. No particular order. Also i'm sure ill be editing this with more annoying personalities/video styles as i can recall them.

1.Young Turks (The over the top outrage)
2.The Slow Mo guys (get to the point, you're NOT funny)
3.Bill Maher (his general personality)
<edit>
4."Social Experiment" videos
5."Prank" videos

Mordhaus says...

I don't have a particular channel or video style I hate, mostly the only ones that grind my gears are those that try to distort the truth. Like those ones where they cut out specific parts of the interview with the planned parenthood lady so that they could say they were harvesting babies on purpose so they could sell them.

ChaosEngine says...

1. Young Turks: why not spend 3 hours to make a point that can be made in 5 minutes!

2. vloggers who/edit way too much
and their cuts/are all
over
the
place

3. That "how to be spiritual guy" (JP Sears, I think he's called?). Yes, it was funny once, but jesus, get a new gag.

4. "fail" videos where morons too fucking lazy to try anything make fun of people who are actually attempting to do cool stuff. There's a difference between stupidity and failure.

4. people editing lightsabers over every goddamn sword fight scene. We get it, you've learned After Effects, now go do something original.

edit: and buzzfeed. Fuck buzzfed

bareboards2 says...

I didn't have an answer until I saw these comments above.

Definitely Young Turks. They need to talk less and get some voice/diction lessons.

Truth distorters. Hate that with a passion.

Anything with pain as humor. I have too much empathy and end up distressed. The ones with the nutsack shots? People falling on their necks? I don't think I have ever gotten to the end of one of those compilations -- I start watching because some "fail" videos are funny without serious harm being involved. But the compilations mostly seem to toss in something that makes me quickly shut 'er down.

And of course -- sexist/racist "jokes". Louis CK has a potty mouth of the nth degree -- doesn't bother me. I love him, because he tells the truth. The man has told a funny rape joke! Who thought that was even possible before he figured out how to do. Sexist/racist crap is lies and ugliness.

I'm sure there is more. That is without thinking about it too hard and stealing from the first posters.

oritteropo says...

Clickbait titles.

Oh, and clickbait thumbnails.

Quite a few of the above would annoy me if I watched more than 1 second of them before clicking away, but I generally don't.

SFOGuy says...

--Compilations? those bug me.
--Clickbait
--Cant watch a Young Turks all the way through. Too painful.
--The social experiment ones always seem...rigged and meant to force a point of some kind.
--Agree solidly with the "pain is funny"; uh no, pain hurts.

transmorpher says...

This is perfect for me, I love complaining ;-)

-OS First Timer channel. (Between the lisp of the presenter, the child like mum and just strange father it has got to be the most cringeworthy videos in history).

-Any video with an intro/logo that goes for more than 2 seconds

-The Young Turks (a perfect example of "the empty can rattles the most")

-Rich Piana, right babe?

-Mean spirited pranks / experiments

PlayhousePals says...

NO, a thousand times NO, to the Young Turks

NO to any animal suffering of any kind ... I just can't unsee that no matter how happy the ending!

NO to truth distorters as well as overtly religious anything

NO to racism in any format

Unlike Eric I adore the Slo Mo Guys ... would enjoy spending the day with them just once and I delight in the cynical smartass that is Bill Maher

Let's play youtubers who act like god damn retarded monkeys, and still manage to be very popular, famous and have a bunch of fans. On the other hand, the fans are usually little kids, so....

newtboy says...

For me, it's false and/or misleading propaganda videos, be they political, social, or scientific....misleading science is a particular pet peeve for me, but any lies get my goat.

HugeJerk says...

I can't stand the guys who are so overly animated in their "Let's Play" videos to the point where it feels like it's a fake persona they're putting on. Guys like Markiplier and Pewdiepie... I love Robbaz though.

kir_mokum says...

in response to the TYT comments: i really appreciate what TYT are trying to do but they need to get their shit on lock. they're too experienced to be operating like a high school news channel/early morning radio comedy show.

same with the real news but their stories are way, way better. and why can't they title their videos in any kind of coherent way?

and i feel similarly about bill maher. about 10-20% of the time he has something worth saying. he does, however, put together some awesomely bizarre groups of people, which i appreciate so long as they're allowed to speak in complete sentences.

anything from the amazing atheist or thunderf00t is just pure cringe these days. they lost the plot years ago and now just their voices sound like crying toddlers to me.

any MRA/ideologically anti-feminist stuff is also pure cringe. i'm all about critiquing ideas and i have my own critiques for parts of feminism but pretty much everything i've seen devolves to "look at this stupid fat girl" pretty quickly.

i also second what newtboy said.

anything political that bobknight posts is just a clusterfuck of wrong/partially wrong/intentionally misleading and adds nothing of substance to any discussion.

what i miss rachael maddow articles. she always seems to research and cover the facts of her stories really well.

RFlagg says...

I'll agree with everyone on TYT. I like the message, but the delivery needs work.

Captain Disillusion. I enjoy debunking, but the persona and gimmick makes it hard to watch most of the time.

Thunderf00t. I enjoyed him for awhile, especially his Creationist debunking era, but then something happened and I just can't do his videos most of the time. Partly it was his stance on elevator gate, which he just pushed and pushed endlessly, but he seemed to just go off after that whole incident. I don't mind the opinion, I disagree, but he just wouldn't let it go... and never got back to what he originally was doing.

Oh and yeah, Angry Videogame Nerd I agree with. Way too much fluff...

Markplier. My kids love him, so my suggestion box is full of him for a few days after every other weekend. I love Twitch and stuff like that, but I don't find his personality at all enjoyable. He's a Pew De Pie wannabe and I can't stand Pew either.

Earthling Cinema... no. Just no. Another annoying personality, I just don't get the appeal.

Speaking of cinema related ones, Cinema Sins. They give 50 or 60, and really only a third or so actually count, even on movies I hated. I appreciate critique but I don't know, I normally can't watch a full episode.

I'll agree with others about mean spirited pranks. Truth distorters, especially when it is for financial, political or religious gain, which I guess is most of those types.

Joshua Feuerstein is a perfect example of the above.

People doing videos in cars, even if parked... there are exceptions to that, like the guy who does carpool karaoke, but most others...

Guy on the street type videos. It's been a format around for too long. How many people did you have to edit out to get a few idiots? Occasionally they'll show one person who knows among 8 others.

When otherwise smart science channels like SciShow and the like use the word "theory" in the common sense of the term and not the scientific use. It continues to distort the public image of the word. They come to a science channel, see it used where they should be using hypothesis. If they want to keep it simple and use guess or ideas. Just don't use the word theory until it's a more accepted theory. This way people don't keep saying "it's just a theory" on actual facts like the big bang, evolution, human accelerated climate change, etc.

bobknight33 says...

Rachael Maddow is the worst.

TYT takes too long to get to the point.

Anti god videos and video that poke fun at god. GOD is real. The fact that man is a corrupt failure and persons of faith (preachers etc) fail does not make make GOD any less real. Man fails. God doesn't.

Bill Maher I just hate his smugness.

I don,t like prank videos that end up hurting someone.

Also I never seen more anti politician videos than the the ones about Trump. The left is relentless. He is not a politician. He is a 70 year old opinionated man who never had to be PC.

ChaosEngine says...

John Oliver does satire and deadpan amazingly well.

But he just can't do "wacky", it just doesn't work for him. His voice goes up and he turns to the graphics and says something like "No johnny, your parents actually hate you" or whatever and it just falls flat every. goddamn. time.

RFlagg said:

... and I love John Oliver, but sometimes his tangents are so irritating I nearly want to skip the video.

Where to start……
The forced laughter when someone’s buddy is filmed wiping out - AH hahaha AH hahaha

99.9% of “selfies”, I despise that word. I don’t want to see your pasty bloated pimply mug so close-up like we’re jammed in a fuckin elevator and I can count your nose hairs. Wearing either the blank dumb look people have when looking at their computer screen or camera phone, or the overly gleeful shit-eating ventriloquist dummy look, All it takes is a camera lens to make people go ape-shit, like a baby making faces in a mirror. When did that shit become normal?

Any kind of rambling monologue with the subject weighing in on the stupid shit of the day, like they are some wise head of state being interviewed on some crisis. Or filming themselves narrating at the scene of some non-event, like they are Edward Murrow reporting on the London Blitz.

The vast majority of trend videos, like “Things New Yorkers Say”, etc. They generally have high production values but ZERO talent on the actual writing. The “punchlines” are usually weak or non-existent, apparently there’s no such thing as out-takes anymore. It’s usually weak material followed by long pauses, which I guess if you drag it out long enough it somehow becomes funny. “Modern Family” and “The Office” have beat that non-punchline pause to death. “Spinal Tap” was the only mock-umentary that ever worked, everything else is just weak.

Idiots who edit videos and who don’t have the basic sense to accommodate people who haven’t seen the material. I’m watching a video on YouTube of vacation snaps from someone’s trip to the mountains of Chile, and they leave each photo onscreen for about 1.2 seconds, with the editor’s goal to use every single transition available in the editing palette to move on to the next picture. It’s amateurish.

Someone else mentioned videos with overly long intros\titles and I agree. It's not "Gone With the Wind", it's a video of your dog pissing in your living room, just get to it.

Back in a few, going to pour my second cup of the day. :-)

Biggest pet peeve of the Sift is having to wade through tl/dr on topics I don't particularly care about to find a concise thought. I mean, wow, some of you people are long winded. I'm open minded, or at least try to be, but DAMN, this is a video commenting site, not a thesis repository. Don't get me wrong, I don't look at any of the Idiocratic comments at YouTube -they're all ghey- but sometimes less is more...

CrushBug says...

Great list above! For me, it is videos that are superficial in the material the are supposed to cover. I was trying to find some information about multi-location VPNs. I found a few videos and they boil down to:

Find a VPN.
Find some software.
Set it all up!

No substance at all, just superficial concepts.

thegrimsleeper says...

videos of someone monologuing with a very holier than you attitude about something they have obviously only looked at with only one narrow perspective. (but mostly when I disagree?? probably)

and videos that have a cool concept but the people making it aren't talented enough to pull it off. it's so frustrating.

kingmob says...

What I don't like...

The painful videos...I always put them off until last when they bubble on the sift.

I don't hate the Young Turks as much as I appreciate their new perspective. That being said I can't watch their videos to finish.

You will hate me for trying to change direction....but what do you LOVE on the YouTube. I have been loving the Vox recently. It gives me the feeling that news and reporting is coming back.

Sorry if I didn't play well...someone invited me.

Jinx says...

The answer is obviously no because https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betteridge's_law_of_headlines

Also, for a terrible moment I thought your comment was an ironic jab at my apparently awful grammar, with which several people obviously agreed. Please tell me this isn't so because truly it would devastate me to be a) so bad at grammar it is notorious b) so lacking in self awareness.

ps. teehee the apostrophe broke the link.

Videos that have someone narrating with that whiny, nasal millennial voice. Seriously, it's ok to ask someone over 30 that can actually speak to narrate your vid about how plastic is slowly seeping into the sun and that's why you can't afford a house next to the dolphins that have been trained to dress homeless hipsters who serve meals on wheels. Get off my lawn.

Lilithia says...

Jenna Marbles is the most annoying YouTube personality I can think of. If I watch more than 10 seconds of one of her videos, I get the urge to jump out of a window and never open YouTube ever again.

I also despise videos of people popping their zits, blisters and things like that. Why are people even interested in watching those?

radx says...

I can't come up with any YT channel or person that annoys me, really. But I only know a handful, so...

As for video styles, well, anyone who shoves his/her face into the camera or seems hyperactive. Not my kinda thing. Any instructional video that focuses more on the person than the actual subject.

Ian of ForgottenWeapons.com has a style I rather like. Composed, focused on the subject, very informative, bit of comedy -- no yelling, no twitching, no music, all business.

Syntaxed says...

Leafy...

Just, Leafy...

Always seems to put an insufferably hideous bent to everything he comments on. Not to mention his general lack of respect for anyone or anything, and his "I can say anything I want because its the internet and no-one is going to do anything about it" attitude towards commentary.

Other than that, the internet is quite a lovely place, just take the Sift for example:)
