Anonymous Video Submitter Contest

We'll be launching a fun contest/experiment at midnight tonight (Pacific). All videos will have the submitter's name hidden from everyone. This means all posts will receive votes purely based on video content, so any and all name recognition bias will be tossed out the window.

At the end of the contest, the highest voted video submitted during the contest's run will be awarded this prize from the VideoSift Shop:

Cube Bot (a distant relative of siftbot)

This transformer-like cherry wood figure can be folded into a cube or posed as you desire.

The contest will run through 11:59PM June 16 (Pacific). In the event of a grand prize tie, a coin will be tossed to choose a winner. Two runners up will win their choice of any VideoSift-exclusive t-shirt design. (Limit one prize per person.)

Please keep in good spirits with this contest and do not attempt to reveal in any way yourself as the submitter of any video during the contest (whether via comment, video title/description, sift lounge, or other means). Should you do that, you'll spoil the fun for everyone else and all of your submissions will be disqualified. At the end of the contest all submitter names will be displayed again as ever before.

Now search and stockpile some great videos and start submitting at midnight (Pacific). The sooner you submit, the more time you'll have to collect votes!

Update: During the contest, the "Who Voted" section will not be displayed on videos and all of siftbot's comments on your profile will be private. Also the *[double]promote, *quality, and *beg invocations will be disabled for all posts so there is no possibility that someone can use their seniority or Power Points to unfairly improve their chances of winning.

If someone self-promotes a video, that will give it away -- better turn off self-promotion, or else change Sifty's response to be identical to a non-self promote.

Related: how many times can we *doublepromote our own videos in order to win the contest?

GDGD says...

This is going to be odd with people being able to boost, promote, or quality posts.

/edit Additional influence come from seeing who HAS voted for a video.

idea for a later date: videos dont display vote count for a weekend (EASTERN time obviously)

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

This is going to be fun. I'm thinking it's going to make us all friends again when the big reveal happens at the end of the week.

It'll be like when Amy thought she was talking to the real Doctor, but the whole time it was the flesh one. You know what I'm talking about.

Stay tuned, for a very special VideoSift.

.. save? That's so 2006.

Forgot to mention that "Who Voted" will not be displayed.
@GDGD: Good point about promote and quality. Those and save will be disabled for all posts during the contest.

Ha! Brain fart. My dementia is showing. I meant *beg.

(Though I'm glad some of you remember the olden times.)

Ahhh, I can't even see my own videos, what has sifted, What to discard and so on....
I don't what's what. I thought we'd at least be able to see our own sifts...

Good point. Fixed this so you can see just your own listings.

soulmonarch says...

Honestly, this isn't a half bad idea even when no contest is running. Everyone here seems to acknowledge that people are putting bias on the submitter of the video, so why not do something about it?

Obviously this exact method isn't perfect, but I know I am actually enjoying having no knowledge of where these videos are coming from.

Sarzy says...

I think it's kinda lame that we can't quality other people's videos. I just watched a pretty awesome video which was pretty much begging for a quality. I really hope it doesn't get lost in the shuffle now.

KnivesOut says...

I've really enjoyed this as well. It's been fantastic. In fact, I think we should make it permanent.

Maybe make queue videos all anonymous until they are sifted. That would be awesome.

In other news, I'm apparently a gigantic asshole. It's much easier to sift things when my video's are anonymous. I must have made some bad impressions on people in the last 3 years.

oritteropo says...

If I have 5 minutes to watch a video or two, and can choose between one posted by someone who usually posts interesting stuff, or J. Random Sifter, which one am I going to choose?

Or, even worse, given a third choice of someone who usually (but perhaps not this time!) posts things I don't enjoy?>> ^Truckchase:

Why should username influence vote?

They will keep until next week, surely?>> ^Sarzy:

Sure, but it'll be too late for the top 15 by then.

oritteropo says...

Oh. Maybe I'm just showing myself off as a newbie again - it wasn't obvious to me that it would matter.

I think the "no quality/promotes" part of the contest sucks, since it changes how the queue works, and only in a bad way.

I'd argue that's what the voting & channel systems are for.

alien_concept says...

I don't agree with the argument that people upvote a video based on the submitter's popularity, it's more to do with the trend of videos of the user that can be popular as far as I can tell. So not sure how apart from being something fun and different, this anonymity thing will change anything.

@KnivesOut, no "apparently" about it

bareboards2 says...

The biggest squelch has been the hobbling of promote and quality. That can't end soon enough, as far as I am concerned.

As for only voting for your buddies....

I'll be honest -- I have sometimes upvoted things that I haven't particularly liked, either because I like the poster or there is a new star power level coming up.

BUT I hold myself up as evidence that this place isn't an insiders' club. I got lots of stuff sifted when nobody knew me, and quickly became bronze.

But the thing is -- I knew THE SIFT, having lurked for over four years. I knew what folks voted for, I knew what titles caught the eye. I know what "sells" -- put bewb in the title, anything with Homer Simpson, really smart science stuff. A good title goes a long way -- folks love cleverness here, and outrage, and passion.

What gets upvoted is the right product, marketed well. Great product with crappy title? Going nowhere. Crappy vid but a great title? It'll probably get sifted, but not much else.

This is what I have observed. Over five years.

Shepppard says...

I gotta admit, I sifted two videos this week. (Third pending, but not very likely, and a fourth that I believe to have been incorrectly duped, but I digress.)

The two videos I posted were just for the sake of posting them, really.

But, I gotta say, I DID notice way back that when I went from just a member to a subscriber (Essentially, when my name turned blue) I noticed that my videos tended to get a lot more votes.

Then again, maybe I just started sifting better videos, who knows.

Shepppard says...

Well, I may be jumping the gun.

But I just doublepromoted a video, which took my star points and sifty said it was going to the frontpage, but it still hasn't made it there.

[Edit] Yep, been ten minutes now and the vid hasn't hit the frontpage.

if this could be looked into @dag or @lucky760, I don't care if I get my starpoints back or the vid just gets the promote it deserves, but one of those would be preferable.

Same here....sifty took my points...been over 10 minutes and nothing on the front page.>> ^Shepppard:
