Dumb Homophobic Christian Takes Stupid to New Depths

Actually, not really new depths, since this kind of abhorrent and immoral ignorance is common among a certain substrata of religious, racist and/or homophobic people.

The pastor Worley being defended by one of his churchgoers here created controversy when he said in a sermon that gays and lesbians should be shut up concentration camp style so they die out (see link below).

I have met many people from the US South with a thick accent that are extraordinarily intelligent.

Here is a hint, get out of the countryside, into the city, and talk to people walking out of buildings with signs like "...SCIENTIFIC", "CISCO SYSTEMS", "....ENGINEERING" on them.

Not saying the countryside isn't packed with intelligent people also.. just saying the college educated masses are attracted to the cities.

It's hard to make this point without sounding somewhat condescending of some party and i really want to avoid that here.

So that's a no then?

It's not a stupid question. What it is is a stereotype that continues to be reinforced. I'd rather not have that stereotype in my head, but I've never seen/heard anyone with that accent speaking eloquently. Or maybe I have and it's been just overshadowed by the endless barrage of the 'dumb yokel' type videos like this one. So, can you mention the name of someone with that accent that is someone of standing or note that I could look up? Or a particular video of someone with that accent being eloquent?

Was my question not asking for examples of NOT conforming to the stereotype? Did I not mention that I'd love to not have that stereotype in my head?

Everyone believes things of varying amounts they know are not true in all cases. We all stereotype to a certain degree. People do it at a race level, a sex level, a class level. Everyone does it.

I'm saying I DO do it with people with this accent, and I'd love to have more examples of people speaking like this yet saying smart things so that my internal prejudice against this accent can be diluted.

To be honest, I'm not sure I associate any US regional accents with any particular sophistication. Accents in general tend to be associated with lower classes and fewer opportunities. The educated and well spoken people from any region tend to shed their regional accents. They just tend to cross pollinate more I think. However there are always counter examples to stereotypes, and certainly intelligence (perhaps in contrast to sophistication?) comes in many forms. I do think it's kind of a dumb question though.

@spoco2....

Maybe if you had just done a tad bit of research and replaced your own mental image? Take responsibility for the fact that it is you who is uninformed about intelligent folks with southern accents, instead of putting your prejudice out there?

I think that might be the essential problem. We all have prejudices. We need to take personal responsibility to reshape our thinking patterns. By asking the question, the prejudicial point of view was somehow oddly reinforced. Giving it energy, instead of bleeding the energy out of it. Does that make sense? By the fact of asking, it somehow perpetuated the stereotype. It's not logical, but humans aren't logical in every moment.

My cousin came to visit from Oklahoma to the Pacific Northwest, at age 50. First time outside Middle America. It broke my heart when she said she didn't want to talk to anyone for fear that they would think she was some dumb yokel because of her accent.

Because it is out there that if you talk that way you are stupid.

messengersays...

No. Sweeping a prejudice under the rug has never done anything to eliminate it. As we all have prejudices (and I'm assuming nobody here will deny it as you're all an intelligent bunch), what could be wrong with admitting one and trying to get rid of it?

I'm Canadian and I acknowledge that I too associate her particular accent with lack of intelligence. If someone is saying something and trying to make it clear they think it is an ignorant point of view, they might put on her accent. I and everyone else understands that they're trying to appear ignorant. It's a very common stereotype.

So it's me, and @spoco2, and just about all English speakers, at least in Canada and northern parts of America, who associate this accent (rightly or wrongly) with lack of intelligence.

Now, once you have identified your prejudice, a thinking person (unlike the idiot in this video) will try and divest themselves of their prejudice by actively seeking counterexamples to their prejudice. And if you're already connected to a community with massive exposure to internet videos, that's the obvious place to start.

I'm not sure what wiser thing Spoco2 could have done. It's not like you can just wish prejudice away. It's a pattern that your brain has noticed, and brains are brilliant at pattern matching. They will not just accept it if you repeat to yourself it's not so. The next time Spoco2 or I hear that accent, we'll still think it sounds unintelligent, unless we start hearing examples of intelligent speakers using it.>> ^bareboards2:

I'm with spoco2. He realized that he's ignorant about something so he asked for additional information. He clearly specified that what he was thinking couldn't be right. The entire issue with people like the woman in the video is that they're ignorant. Wouldn't we want to show her examples of moral homosexuals that had contributed positively to their communities? Why wouldn't we do the same for spoco2?

As for ignorant southerners with accents, I agree with bmacs. More educated people in the US tend to shed their extreme accents. Or, more precisely, they tend to acquire a middle America accent, which most Americans perceive as having no accent. I think one reason for that is that as they interact with a variety of people, they start noticing their own accent and realizing how different they sound. For southerners especially, there's a very negative correlation that comes along with that, so if they want to be taken seriously they might want to get rid of their accent. I remember noticing my own accent in my early teens and working hard to eliminate it.

Skeevesays...

I have to agree with @spoco2 and @messenger.

It seems to me that if someone wants to portray an ignorant person, the simplest way is to speak with an accent like the woman in the video. The accent is social shorthand for stupid. Does that mean all people with a southern accent are stupid? Of course not, but I can completely understand the need/desire to hear someone with an accent like that saying something intelligent to counteract the brain's tendency to make that association.

For me personally, I met a guy a few months ago with a thick southern accent and I noticed that right away I made that kind of association regardless of the fact that he was obviously a smart guy. It often takes time and a number of counterexamples before we can get over certain stereotypes and I applaud Spoco for recognizing the shortcoming and aiming to fix it.

KnivesOutsays...

@spoco2 @messenger @bareboards2 I think this is a great discussion.

I'm a SharePoint Consultant and Software Engineer from North Carolina, but I'll be honest, I disguise my accent when I'm speaking with clients, if only because it sounds strange to my ears to say "Let's talk about your information architecture" with a drawl. I'm also not truly a native, having only lived here since high school.

That said, I deal with locals on a daily basis who are both highly technical and very southern. Accent just doesn't equate to intelligence. A better metric would be whether they go to church on Wednesday night (although some of the finest software engineers I've worked with have also been devoutly religious, so w/e.)

In North Carolina we have centers of civilization, usually areas surrounding the I40 corridor, and then we have the boonies. I would invite you to come to Chapel Hill or Durham on a Friday afternoon and have some drinks on the patio.

Accents carry connotations. I'm Irish and when I want to emphasise that I mean something ironically (i.e. IMO the following is what someone uneducated would say), I will use a stronger rural Irish accent.

If I wish to be taken seriously, I speak in a more neutral tone.

This is because there is a prejudice against such accents. It's a stereotype, a cliché.

Why?

Because retards like this woman continually espouse idiotic views in that kind of accent. and if there's one thing humans are good at (and the FSM knows we seem to fuck just about everything else up), it's pattern recognition. It's why we see the "man in the moon" and why stupid people believe in homoeopathy.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. They're shorthand that allows us to make snap judgements and evolution has hard wired us to make snap judgements. Sometimes they reflect the general case, sometimes they're just out of date (for the record, the average person speaking in an Irish accent is probably smarter, better looking and more charming than you ).

So how do we get past this? If you belong to a demographic, for instance (to take an example completely at random), a citizen of southern states of the US, try to be less like this woman.

So to sum up,
stereotypes: usually have a backing in fact, but try to judge individuals on their character not their background.

also, this woman is a fucking retard.

From the clip I just watched, not so much in the way of that accent. Also, it shows they know guns. That's just reinforcing the stereotype. It'd be like you presenting a clip of someone talking in depth about Nascar.

uhh, no. The challenge was to find a southern speaking person speaking intelligently. Challenge accepted and completed. You're talking about the stereotype of their hobbies....different stereotype.
And again, try to be the better person here and stop judging people on their accent please. I thought the sift was better than that.

Yep. That's about it. The pastor probably couldn't be reached for comment, or didn't have the potential to be quits as iconic as this woman. For an news-tainment network pandering to the masses with limited capacity for independent critical thought, I think this interview was the right choice. If it had been NPR or the CBC, I would've been disappointed.>> ^hpqp:

Of course, it's not pastor Worley's statements that are stupid and homophobic beyond belief, it is just that the evil manipulators at CNN trawled through all the intelligent and ethical defenders of the pastor's stance to find the one pearl who would misrepresent him and his ideas the most. Nothing to do with the content of what she's defending, nuh-uh.
edit: reworded to give the pastor's congregation the benefit of the doubt>> ^messenger:
She was probably hand-picked for her stupidity and accent so Cooper could humiliate her and make her the poster child for homophobes. This is CNN, remember, not an actual news organization.>> ^bobknight33:
What a poor interview. This should have been with someone who had the intellectual capability to have this discussion. Where was the Pastor, Deacon or such who could have properly defended, justified the statements from the sermon.

If she was to represent any one else on any other topic she would have been just as bad.

@messenger

Are you seriously suggesting that there might've been smarter people than this willing to defend pastor Worley on this point? I think any member of his congregation with a quarter of a functioning brain would've fled the news cameras no matter how much they agreed with the homophobic pastor. Even our resident fundies have refused to comment*, while other believers have only given it an honorary downvote.

*edit: apart from bobknight's "y u so mean?" defense of course.

Yes, I am. You just need a (confident+media whore):(intelligent+media savvy) ratio higher than 1.>> ^hpqp:

Come to Europe. All American accents sound stupid over here. I mean you Americans can't even pronounce aluminium or lieutenant correctly...

Lieutenant is the one Americanisation I'm for. There's no F there! "Leftenant" just sounds silly

I did the same thing, actually. There are accents which are identified with stupid all over the world I remember making the conscious decision in primary school one day: "I don't want to sound like that.">> ^messenger:

FWIW, Stephen Colbert grew up in South Carolina, and changed his accent as a child. He talks about how he understood that the local accent was shorthand for stupid, so he chose to speak with a standard American accent from childhood. Actually, the story behind the "lieutenant" pronunciations is pretty twisted. From the OED:

The origin of the βtype of forms (which survives in the usual British pronunciation, though the spelling represents the αtype) is difficult to explain. The hypothesis of a mere misinterpretation of the graphic form (u read as v), at first sight plausible, does not accord with the facts. In view of the rare Old French form luef for lieu (with which compare especially the 15th cent. Scots forms luf- , lufftenand above) it seems likely that the labial glide at the end of Old French lieu as the first element of a compound was sometimes apprehended by English-speakers as a v or f.

Very curious to know what place's accent you had, and what place's accent you changed to. Your profile says Ireland. Was it a specific county?>> ^lampishthing:

I had a Sligo townie accent, and I tried to adapt a British-y accent. I ended up with something happily neutral though a tad effete. The townie accent would be a working class one, for lack of a better term. Eventually I moved to Dublin and ended up with something verging on an American accent because of American friends and nerds in general. When people started asking me if I was American all the time I started trying to change to a general "culchie" accent and at this stage it's just a bit of a mess Ireland has a surprisingly large array of accents for its size, there's probably one for each county. >> ^messenger:

I'm not here to defend her or the Pastors sermon content. All I'm saying if you are going to have a debate make it fair. Have equal intellectual capacities to present their ideas. As a professional news outlet they should have know not to have her on the air.

@bobknight33 You HAVE to be kidding... any interest in defending those statements yourself?... Devil's advocate even?... i mean ANY defense/excuse/rationalization/explination... anything? I'd really love to hear it. Or just consider for a moment the possibility that the comments made by this bigot and the folks who support him, reflect VERY well on the intelligence level of the person in this video. I suspect you'd have an incredibly hard time finding someone who isn't this stupid to go on camera and actually support them...

The "debate" is inherently unfair because one side has to defend indefensible stupidity. As for what's on the air in "professional news outlets" (and I'm no fan of CNN), her intelligence seems to be only slightly beneath the average of Fox News' presenters. S'all fair and balanced. >> ^bobknight33:

...Now, here's a question for the sift. Can someone point me to a video of someone speaking with that accent and saying something of intelligence? Because I can only think 'STUPID BIGOT!' whenever I hear that accent, and that can't be correct, there must be smart people in the areas that have that accent.

That really was quite an ironic statement there lol Everything we say about this woman can be applied to that little comment... Uninformed, bigoted, biased, hateful, etc etc etc....
