The Coast Guard saves an SUV Driver

There most certainly ARE some very rugged SUVs out there. Quite capable of taking on the Baja, the Moroccan desert, even the Rocky Mountains.

But why would you decide to try and drive out to the end of a jetty when the waves are predicted to reach 27 feet high?

I haven't seen the SUV yet that would make a good surf rescue boat. And among the boats that are designed for the surf (Coast Guard 47 foot lifeboats?), only great cause would lead a captain to challenge a storm with those waves in the surf break.

Nice Coast Guard save.

One of our local morons. That's about 15 miles from me.
It's going to cost him a pretty penny to have his truck removed from the ocean. No clue why he thought he might make it, the jetty itself was washing out.
Darwin award runner up.

Edit:the truck (a Nissan, not Toyota) was removed at low tide. Good job Buddies Towing.

Probably means he's not a local, but not definitive. People up here tend to not reregister their out of state cars. I'll go with the assumption he's from Arkansas, though. We have enough brain dead slugs here without claiming more.

If you look really closely you can almost see the Trump/Pence sticker on that back... right next to his Keep Honking I'm Reloading ... and just above the Jesus fish.

That sentence LITERALLY doesn't make ANY sense...

Kruposays...

Misuse of contractions is totally a crime.

Forget the tow charges, fixing all the salt water damage will be insane.

Around the 50 second mark to 1 minute mark, it looks like his steering got messed up, so he was probably stuck after that point, but at the 30 second point it becomes obvious that going forward isn't the right move.

Also, what is it lately that 90% of all videos no longer will go full screen on the Sift?

Yeah, looked like a tie rod broke.

What seals this guys idiocy for me is when he gets out of the truck and casually leans against the wall. If the water is pushing your 4000#+ vehicle around, why would you get out and stand between it and a concrete wall! That guy could have very easily got himself crushed.

SFOGuysays...

After I read "The Perfect Storm", I sort of wondered how the Coast Guard feels about rescuing people who have rather imperfectly exercised their judgement and gotten themselves into a pretty bad situation. Of course, in that book, a chopper goes down trying to rescue a not very clever sailboat owner who has set sail into the face of the storm (they oddly survive). And I guess the answer is: the rescue crews just don't think about it that way at all. They are there to rescue people; so they just try. It might sort of drive me crazy.
