I support dag's decision. Choggie was banned from this community for all sorts of anti-social shenanigans, and yet he was eventually allowed to return anyway. He's been given more chances than anyone here EVER, yet he chooses to piss them away by his continued mean-spirited behavior.

We had an agreement with Choggie on his return that he would avoid all ad hom attacks against members. That was part of the deal and not negotiable. To be honest I was keen to give it a try- I like the idea of second chances. In this case it just didn't work out.

Choggie picked on a lot of people. Especially those he thought were smart enough and strong enough to be able to handle it. He often overestimated them, unfortunately.

I liked Choggie, but that comment was pretty bad.

I had, if I remember correctly, voted against letting him back. And though he's a cool guy (and, mind you, blew the anniversary power points he won on me and others) I can't say that I am surprised he got banned again. Sadly tact is not in his vocabulary (to be fair, he has his own dictionary ).

Saying someone isn't highly evolved sounds pretty mild relative to the political intolerance that's a regular part of life on the Sift.

Overreaction, simple as that. Someone took way too much offense and someone decided to react without thinking it through properly.

choggie is one of the best sifters around and if he challenges people by either questioning them/their motives or just trolling them for the hell of it, he does so with good intentions. Too bad some of those people can't see it like that, but that's their problem. I'm sad to see him go.

I was a major proponent of his reinstatement, but he was wearing me thin. He seemed always out to pick a fight...which is fine, but his act was cringe-worthy given the fine line he had been given.

Originally, he came off as caring for this site so much that he would fight and kick to keep things the way he envisioned it. That's all well and good, and I don't blame him for having a passion for videosift. It starts to get old when just because he didn't agree with somebody or somebody's content, he'd cut down the video's poster. He's too volatile to get along happily on this site, in my opinion.

One thing to make clear. Choggie is NOT a TROLL. That is him, through and through. You should try talking to him on the phone sometime.

Choggie never did anything nasty to me personally - however, my dear hubby, NetRunner, cannot say the same. Choggie was not the reason why I stopped sifting. I simply just burned out. But when Choggie was reinstated, I definitely didn't want to come back.

It is the Internet. I have been online since 1992. I know what goes on, just these days I have enought choices to just leave when a place becomes too much to bear. I am ignoring a lot, and I have had a thick skin. But enough is enough. You hurt my loved ones, you hurt me.

Yes, I am sorry, but I still am fragile! I am emotional! I take things personally! You might say nasty things because you think you are anonymous, and people who take things seriously are silly, but that's not true. Choggie is no troll. He sure as hell rubbed a lot of people the wrong way but that's their problem more than it is Choggie's. He was also never malicious in any way that I ever witnessed. An asshole then? Sure, but being an asshole ain't no crime last time I checked. We're all adults here, and if you haven't ever learned how to deal with assholes by the time you reach adulthood, then that's once again your problem. There are people on the sift whose crimes are greater than any ever perpetrated by Choggie. If being an offensive, racist and hateful troll are indeed crimes then Quantummushroom should have received the death penalty a long time ago, but he hasn't, nor should he. I blame the ills of choggie on choggie. Not the ills of the site. This was inevitable with his attitude and his tone. He was a troll with a cloak and for some reason people treat him like the fucking savior. He said he he was "waking people up" by calling them all idiots and spouting obscenities at them. People revere obscurity, but it's a hollow praise when they don't vote that way. We have a silent majority that wants what's at the top of the sift right now - who are you, or anyone of the taste-judges who have left,

Rose tinted glasses again. This was always a liberal, atheist site with a few outliers with different opinions. There are still very interesting discussions and interesting disagreements, but they are stifled with dramaah which someone like choggie was good at making. He had a knack for walking in on a thread and basically killing any hope of a meaningful discussion. I feel just fine that he got himself ousted. I thought it would take less than 6 months, but it was a nice try to give him a second chance - worth a shot, but, for me anyway, it's over now.

Originality is an antithesis to popularity, usually, and the site is based on popularity. This is not a new discussion, it's always been like this.

You just have to look closer for originality. Compare with youtube, you can't find quality there without drowning in a sea of shit - I prefer the sift any day.

^Yeah @enoch, perception is a funny thing. While you saw a powerful argument, I saw basically two vague-to-the-point-of-meaningless arguments repeated ad nauseum. Those arguments were:

1) It's all a distraction.

I don't think anyone would disagree that the corporate media distracts us from issues that are potentially damaging to corporations. They love issues like gay marriage and abortion, which have few financial ramifications for big money. But you know what? There is plenty of quality reporting out there. Foreign policy, health care, the bailouts and other meaningful issues have been covered at great length and with impressive depth.

The major undoing of choggian bumper sticker politics is the fact that the media he tends to criticize is often the more honest and progressive reporting of people like Rachel Maddows. And when he does decide to lay into Rachel, he does it with the intellectual heft of a flea, with dumb ass comments about her sexual orientation and the way she styles her hair. That was obviously dealt with, and if I wasn't banned then that should answer your question as to whether or not I was guilty. Well, from what I understand whereas yeah, the sifters voted yes/no for allowing choggie back on, the only way it would be allowed was if he agreed that he would strictly adhere to the sifts rules since he was being allowed back.

I don't know if you remember it (most likely, because it wasn't exactly subtle) but the reason choggie got banned in the first place was because he threw a giant hissy fit for not being allowed another channel. He went on a giant downvoting and *.discarding spree, because he wanted his account removed.

Whereas yeah, people bend the rules and break them here and there, there's a little bit of tolerance because on the whole they haven't done stupid shit in the past. (example, downvoting spree)

i agree with you DST and i stated as much.
i am not defending his words nor his actions.i disagreed with his tactics and have told him so on more than one occasion.belittling or berating someone whose view is different from your is not conducive for a productive discussion.
what i did speak about was his intent,which was never to be as destructive as it was received.
now this may be due to the fact that choggie and i never had words.
we had disagreements and i would call him on blatant ruses and shenanigans.he never tore in to me..i usually got a chuckle out of him.
even if he did tear into me..who cares?
that is what an ignore function is for.i would never use that function because that just ruins the fun..but that is me..others may be more sensitive to disparaging remarks and maybe they should utilize the ignore function more often.i cannot speak for others.
the other item i addressed was the collective myopia.it does not sit right with me to put blame on a person where it should not lay.the very things some people are complaining about..after the fact mind you...are reactions to choggies hyperbolic commentaries.
