What we have here ...

... is pretty cool. I'm not one to toot my own horn, but I'm happy to toot yours.

We've been working through the details on the upcoming VideoSift 5 upgrade - and examining all of the little bits of community functionality - has made me realise what a unique place this is. This may seem a bit like I'm blowing wind up your proverbial - but indulge me:

  • A vast library of video content - with virtually no dupes
  • A self-policing community with almost no spam
  • We fix dead videos!
  • 99.9% interesting content. (Try a random post - I dare anyone to tell me they landed on a crap video.)
  • Generally cordial, engaged intelligent interactions with each other
  • And finally, an elite, yet small group of curators who are driving the viewing habits of millions and millions of people on the net.

That last point is kind of an interesting one. You'll know that VideoSift itself gets a couple of million page views a month- but the larger impact is made by bloggers, Tweeters, journalists and others who are silently slurping up VideoSift content for reuse. It's harder to measure that kind of impact, but it's definitely large. And as much as we complain about Reddit reposts here - the reverse is also, definitely true. (though it's largely undetectable - as most people just grab the embed).

We haven't done much naval-gazing lately, but I just wanted it noted for the record - before we move towards the next phase of VideoSift - that what we have all built together here - is pretty damn cool - and thanks everyone for making it my favourite place on the net.

I'm pretty sure dag was both drunk crying when he wrote this. I can just envision his tear stained keyboard and Aussie accent. That's so lame... I love you guys too. You guys not might know this but I tend to think of myself as a one man wolf pack...

    Dang it, now I'm crying.

Big upvote for this The sift has been one of my homepage tabs on my browser for years now, and is the only site on the web that I have ended up meeting people from in real life... so that must count for something.

Oh, and my random video was this one which I was about to call out as not being interesting... but then the damn bird started its head twirl dance move and I was gone... GOLD my friends, gold.

Story of my life! MY random video [kraftwerk - we are the robots (live)] has been blocked by BMI [Bowel Movement Incorporated?] ... hmmm, perhaps that COULD qualify as a crap video [EXPERIENCE ... on my end that is] =oD

I haven't really been here all that long, but the Sift is number one on MY hit parade ... [almost] since I landed. I check here before I check my email

Loved that dancing parrot ... chose NOT to watch that ass milking [?] video [don't judge me!] =o/

Thanks [guys] for having a site I really enjoy ... it's helped me through a LOT of crap these past few months and I've made some very interesting acquaintances here.

Been here since inception, lurking then contributing.

It was the intelligence of the comments that got me hooked. I often learned more about something from a Sifter than I did from the vid itself.

Can't say that about comment streams in very many places!

Thanks, dag and @lucky760 for all your work in making this place what it is....

Two things in your post really play off each other. Dead videos and the random feature.
Sometimes I'll sit down and just start hitting Random, occasionally tracking through the Related videos (much in the same way one can get lost on a Wikipedia journey). But I'm often struck by the number of dead videos (account closed, video removed, copyright claim, etc).
I'd love to report them (or attempt to repair them), but my bronze star got revoked in the 4.0 reorg.

Sweetie, you are two vids away from bronze. Your situation is easily fixed with a minimum of effort.

Talk to eric3579 -- he's always been generous with finding siftable vids that he himself doesn't want to post. He has given me several Top 15 vids... you might even earn some power points out of the deal, if he is still being generous (it's been awhile since he has shared with me.)

I'm glad that there are thresholds that need to be met in order to gain certain powers. It doesn't stop the odd Self-Destructo from using their powers to wreck havoc when they leave, but certainly it slows down folks who are bent that way from the beginning.

Two vids and you can dead head to your heart's content, my friend! No need to keep yourself hobbled.

I was wondering if anyone would take the time to check that. (I was surprised when I noticed it just a few weeks ago, because I'm honestly not sure where some of those stars came from. I know I wasn't very close right after 4.0, and kinda lost interest out of frustration at the time.) I'm sure it doesn't bolster my argument that I'm also sitting on 7 Power Points at the moment. (I'd have to go look up what they're even good for pre-Bronze.)

While I agree with you that thresholds are good things in a largely self-moderated community such as the Sift, I think some of the Bronze level powers would be perfectly safe in the hands of folks with far fewer than 25 Star Points.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Maybe we need sub bronze, or tin stars?>> ^ReverendTed:

@dag @lucky760 I have another idea to add to the list of siftty upgrades. How about having the upvoted and downvoted sifters appear not only when viewing the sift in its own table but when hovering on the upvote and downvote arrows like you can for comments? Just another suggestion.
