Terrifying Climb up a 1786 Foot Tower

Relates to my previous post "Don't Shit Your Pants." Have never felt so uncomfortable watching a video of someone doing their job.

If that was the last available job on earth... well.. I guess I was going to become a homeless person, because that is DEFINITELY not for me lol. The stupid thing is, I actually enjoy great views from high up, but I would be absolutely terrified to do that.

I hope those guys get a decent pay for doing this.

edit: Although... some people have really good tolerance for scenarios such as this, so I bet for those guys, it's another day on the office.

As if the other parts werent bad enough, starting at 4:15, I really had trouble watching that. His hands had this "hmmm, wtf do I grab onto now" movement.

I also wonder how much that tower sways?

New thought.. can you imagine building these things?? There's only one way you're getting all that crap up there - carrying it.. Then you have to put it all together? criminy. I can imagine looking for the right size wrench up there and thinking dammit all this bolt needs a 5/8 wrench and all I have it a 1/2 and a 3/4. Guess I'll climb back down.

Great day job for a mountain climber.

Makes you wonder why they don't just build this shit up top of mountains.

Does anybody else play Just Cause 2? I played it a lot earlier in the year and some parts of this video, while cringe-inducing, alternately give me the urge to throw myself off, as I'm pretty sure I could make it to the top of that other tower over there with a clean swoop.

Going up certainly looks frightening; what really scares me (putting myself in their shoes) is going down. Looking down the entire time with all of your weight going down. You probably get numb - weak feet as well as a numb mind.

I want to see the climb down. I remember going to some forest park as a kid and climbing this tall fire watch tower. You walked up stairs for about half way up, then from there you had to walk on a walkway outside the tower and climb ladders. I thought the climb up was fun and exciting, but when I got to the top and realized how high I was, I was frozen stiff when it came time to go down. When I finally did get down, I realized it wasn't so bad and wanted to do it again.

Even after that I still had a fear of climbing down. Even just climbing a ladder on to the roof of the house. I had no problem getting up, but was always nervous taking the first steps to get down.

Stusays...

They don't face jump off because of the support cables. The run extensively down the sides of the towers and for miles outward. They are needed because of the instability of a skinny, yet heavy structure. The sway in the wind would knock it down without a second thought. If they tried to jump and a gust of wind took a hold of them, they would get caught in the support wires and be literally hanging hundreds of feet in the air with no way down.

Well, us poor schmucks could call it undead, then dead again to force the second backup up on line.
Ah, what the hell, 6am, noone around, time to experiment: return

Ah, so that's how us peasants do it.
