It's not just about dullness and being boring. Religious zealots confirmed in their beliefs and unswerving in their faith make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. It's kind of like the creepiness of the uncanny valley with robots. "Letting go and letting God" is an abdication of your humanity - and it shows on the outside.

Gay people, in my subjective experience, are often the opposite. Full of quirky, imperfect, damaged humanity - or maybe you could even call it the holy spirit. I think I will.

Allow me to quote GK Chesterton:

Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried.

To live like Jesus is a taller order than you seem to realize, and of course as I am sure you realize, most of us have failed to do so. You seem to have this idea that Christians believe that they are perfect, but that is a joke. We are actually far more candid with eachother about our faults than would even be socially acceptable in secular culture. We don't think we are perfect, and even the most devout of the brethern runs into doubts. Letting go and letting God isn't in the bible. What we do is trust God with our lives, it isn't sitting back and doing nothing. To do what Jesus gave us to do is a lot of hard work.

This is what you don't understand: We love God. The tragic thing about you atheists is that you do too, in your own ways. You all love the Creation. You are fascinated and mystified by the Universe, in awe of its manifold complexity and endless wonders. That is, if there is nothing attached to the experience. You value and treasure your freedom from authority, and guard it jealously; after all you think you only have one life to live. I can understand that. You want to be in control.

Yet, you're not in control. Look at Steve Jobs, he had about everything you could ever hope to have, and none of it did him the least bit of good. In the end, he illustrated the truth of this verse:

Matthew 16:26

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

There is no control to be had, because no one is in control on this planet except for God. What you consider happenstance and coincidence doesn't really exist. So, we give God back what He already has. We decide to stop fooling ourselves and believe that we can beat the system, because the issue has already been decided. What you do in this life matters, because at the end you will give account for every idle word.

Someone has to be God, this what you don't understand. I doubt many of you have thought this through very deeply. Let's play your game for a moment. Let's say the Universe really is 20 billion years old, and life is able to evolve spontaneously from nothing. This means that some lifeforms have had a lot more time to develop than others, and the ones who were successful early and have mastered physical reality are going to be more powerful than anyone else. If any of this is true you most certainly already have a self-proclaimed divinity, one that may look upon a lifeform like us like cockroaches. The position of absolute ruler of existence is a power vacuum that will be filled by someone, and it is almost certainly filled already.

If God isnt in charge, you should be scared of who is. It is a far better thing to have someone who loves us personally and cares about our lives. The alternative is far worse, and something that should worry any thoughtful person. Because if God isn't in charge, and it isn't you and it isn't me; it is going to be someone else. You might not think God is perfect, but again, you love His reality, you just don't want to play by His rules. What you're unwilling to do is take a long hard look at yourself and see that if you are going to be honest about it, the problem is with you and not with Him. You most certainly have some terrific sounding excuses for how you justify rebellion against God, but none of them will match up to your conscience.

I got into work this morning and saw the email from GetUp (the advocacy group who created this), and thought I'd give the video a watch, having no idea what it was about. (probably should have been, if I'd been thinking about it I would have thought what the hot topics in Australia are currently around relationships).

But really well done, really great.

It's so very sad that anyone can watch this and feel anything but joy for this 'couple' (I only put couple like that as they're actors, not real). @shinyblurry, you are filled with hate born from fear. You fear gay people because you fear anything different from your little world. You label it 'sin' to make yourself feel righteous about condemning it, but it comes down to you feeling 'icky' about two men lovin' it up because you haven't been exposed to it...

But on a happy note, this video has gone wonderfully for Get Up, and one can only hope our darn Prime Minister legalises it...

There are a couple of GLARING, STUPEFYINGLY OBVIOUS problems with your 'arguments'.

1) You have decided that there must be a god, that it is inconceivable that there is not one. That there is no other possibility but there is some omnipotent being that runs everything. You give no logical reasoning for this, you have just decided, for yourself, that it MUST be and so there is no arguing the point. Well, on that point you are wrong. Not that there isn't, necessarily a god, but just that there must be one. There is nothing at all that says there must be a god. Go nuts believing that there is one, but don't think that you have come up with some endgame argument that there must be a god, because you haven't.

&

2) You then go on to this weird reasoning that because there must be a god, that it's better if said god is the one in your bible, because, well, he's tip top and damn super, and that he has a personal interest in every one of the 7 billion lives on this planet. Even, apparently, the billions that are condemned to poverty, starvation, murder and death. (And the far worse alternative is that there's some super being somewhere that doesn't give two rat's arses about us... I'm not sure how that's worse at all. What would I care if there's some overlord who is quite happy for this planet to just 'be' and do whatever we want, sounds great to me)

&

3) You again make the assumption (with nothing to back it up) that this reality is created by your god, and so we must play by his rules... when

a) You've convinced no one that it is his reality, and
b) even if it were his reality, I don't think that ridiculous book written by a swathe of people across a vast amount of time, and rewritten by whoever happened to be in power at the time says anything like what he actually believes or wants.

So... sorry, you haven't thrown down any arguments at all... you've spouted your beliefs, from your book that you think is the word of god, no matter how much it can be shown not to be... and somehow you think that's going to win over atheists.

To wit I say... BWAAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HE HE HE HE He he he he ha ha ho ho he he

aaaahhhh, that's priceless, you're adorable.

shinyblurrysays...

It seems from reading your posts here that you think we should be scared if no one is in charge, but for me, that idea is what gives me the greatest peace.

I'm sure that thought delights your conscience, but I never said no one is in charge. I said if God isn't in charge, someone else surely is. The ultimate authority over the Universe is a power vacuum that will inevitably be filled, probably by whatever civilization evolved first. There would be civlizations out there with head starts of millions, or even billions of years. So, one way or another, Earth is under the rule of a higher power. After 20 billion years time, it's inevitable that every inch of this place is staked out and every resource tabulated.

If you have a chance I hope you would take the time to learn about other religions and points of views about humanity and human spirit. It doesn't require you believing in them to learn about them. Placing your faith in what you have been spoon fed since birth is far easier than trying to extract your own reality.

Before I became a Christian, which was late in my life, I explored the different religions and belief systems in the world, for a period of many years. I am an expert on comparitive religions and I well aware of what other people believe and why, including atheists and agnostics, since I used to be one.

I don't have anything against gay people. It isn't as if homosexuality is so much worse than any other sin, although all the baggage that comes with it can cause a society to become totally degenerate. Take the greeks for example.

I don't label it sin because I am afraid of it, or for a feeling of superiority. I don't think I am superior to any other human being. I call it sin because that is what God said it is. It's immoral and goes against Gods design, and nature itself. You call me intolerant but you aren't tolerant of my beliefs, so I don't think you have anything to say about tolerance.

What I said is that if God isn't in charge it is someone else. Earth answers to a higher authority, one way or another. Stephan Hawking recently said that this power is almost certainly hostile to our interests.

I will say though that it is obvious there is a God. Anyone who believes that something like the Universe comes about by happenstance is in massive denial.

2) You then go on to this weird reasoning that because there must be a god, that it's better if said god is the one in your bible, because, well, he's tip top and damn super, and that he has a personal interest in every one of the 7 billion lives on this planet. If you want to pin suffering and death anywhere, it rests squarely on mans shoulders. We could feed, clothe and vaccinate the entire world for what Europe spends on ice cream every year.

The worse alternative is being ruled over by something that doesn't care about us, which means that, at any moment we are completely expendible, or a resource to be used and abused as it sees fit. Look at what we do to the animals and then imagine what a higher being might do with us. Could be that we're being fattened for the slaughter.

"Someone has to be God, this what you don't understand."
and
"If God isnt in charge, you should be scared of who is. You most certainly have some terrific sounding excuses for how you justify rebellion against God, but none of them will match up to your conscience."

What I would call that is a brain fart..and I'll give you a round number; zero. This idea that everyone who is against homosexuality are themselves unconsciously attracted to the idea I think is nonsense, like they are fighting against a desire so they cover it with disgust and manufactured outrage. Maybe some people do that, but the idea isn't just unpalatable to me, it grieves me at heart. All sin leads to death, and people ensnared by sin are heading towards it unless they repent. For me this is a heart matter stemming from compassion not condemnation. I say what I do because of the fact that the Lord commanded me to do so, and because I care, not because I want anything bad to happen to anyone, or that I think anyone is less than I am.

I love that Freudian slips work on the Internet too. So how many gay people have you had SB? In round numbers. <IMG class=smiley src="http://cdn.videosift.com/cdm/emoticon/wink.gif">>> ^shinyblurry:
I don't have anything except gay people.

Paul was forgiven for his former ways, because he turned from his sins and accepted Jesus Christ as Lord. Otherwise, you would be correct, that he would fall under this judgement. And this isn't the standard of Paul, it is Gods standard.

So it's my fault you don't have any self-control? It doesn't matter what you think about me personally. The word of God is what is important:
1 Corinthians 6
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Using Paul's own standards he is condemning himself to hell, no? Or is it righteous to persecute and kill Christians?

It's never going to cease being a sin no matter how you dress it up. It is immoral and against the natural order of the Universe, as ordained by our Creator.

Oh fucking shut up already. No one here cares about your opinion on anything. Seriously.
I really wish the sift would completely remove you from my view when you're set to "ignore". Then I wouldn't be so fucking tempted to pop open your comments like the puss-filled, diseased boils they are.
Fucking troll.

Disagree, but respectfully disagree. Your vitriol against him is comparable to his vitriol against gay people.

(Unless it's actually a troll - I don't know or care enough to check, at the risk of potentially feeding one.)

Respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement. There is nothing wrong with despising someone for being a terrible person, which shiny has clearly demonstrated that he is. OTOH, he is condemning millions of people he has never interacted with purely because of their sexual orientation.
