Watchmen Trailer

Arrgh... I love Watchmen -- it's one of my favorite books ever, graphic or otherwise -- so I want nothing more than for this movie to be awesome. But this looks terrible. The visual style looks really similar to 300, which is all wrong for Watchmen (it was all wrong for 300, too, but I digress). It's just too slick and artificial... urge to kill... rising...

UPDATE: You can watch a high quality version here:

It's even more disappointing in HD.

no movie could possibly live up to the source material, for me, but i'll see it anyway.

and yeah, i kinda' wish no one ever tried to. even gilliam passed, long ago, and i can't think of any director better qualified, or suited, for it.
anything even close to a proper adaptation, would be the longest movie ever made, and be disjointed enough to make Memento a breeze to follow by comparison.

but i recommend it the highest among comics, followed by Dark Knight Returns and Maus. i'm the sole reason most of my friends have read it.

budzossays...

I too wish they never tried. I resent the fact that the general public is going to feel they "get" something relatively obscure, for which I took the time and effort to become intimately acquainted back when I was a teenager. It's like they're invading my happy little culture niche. Although I anticipate it will remove a small part of the stigma from being a comic book fan.

I recently re-read the Watchmen and it was probably the best lazy Sunday in years.

One thing that's pretty cool is they're going to release a companion DVD a-la Animatrix and Batman: Gotham Knight, which'll have the pirate comic in animated form, or told with live action stylized to a more antiquated comic book look than the movie proper.

I have my ticket for a VIP adults-only screening of Dark Knight at noon tomorrow. They have big huge leather seats in the VIP, which combined with the no kids thing makes it worth an extra $4 to me. Oh and the best part is reserved seating, so you don't need to line up like a schmuck for hours beforehand in order to get a good seat.

spoco2says...

Yeah, so watched it over at the think up there ^

My thoughts, coming from someone who knows nothing of Watchmen other than how highly regarded it is, and how 'adult' the content is (ie, it's a real story for adults, not a kids comic), are:

* This is a terrible trailer.
* But that doesn't make me want to see the movie more or less
* The trailer says NOTHING as to what the hell the movie is about. For me, a trailer has to hook me with a promise of an interesting story or fun adventure or rolicking good time etc. This one shows me a bunch of slow motiony bits that could have come from any of the recent super hero movies, and gives me no indication of what the main story of the piece is.

So... I'd shoot the trailer makers, they get paid a huge sum of money, and this is what they come up with? Please.

I don't know wtf you douche bags are talking about. I loved the graphic novel and this trailer looks fuckin awesome! I can't wait to see this. The 300 more than lived up to my expectations and this looks set to do the same.

EMPIREsays...

I'm 100% behind Fade. I read Watchmen somewhere in the last 6 months, and I loved it obviously. And this trailer is all shades of awesome!
AWESOME! you people don't know what you're talking about

What a delightful addition to the conversation.

Really, perhaps you should head over to Digg, or 4Chan or something? I think they run at the level of 'douche bags' and things being 'fuckin awesome'

Grow up.

Fadesays...

Oh wait SPoco2, I was forgetting myself. This is a grown-up website? Where I can find such high brow entertainment as eia and wtf and ball flexing?
How about you get over yourselves and lighten-up.

I don't see what everyone is so angry about. I love Watchmen, and this trailer has me really excited about the movie. Sure, the styling is different, but I personally like it when artists excercise their license...

Whenever there's a comic book movie, there will be purists who cry foul - no offense. I can relate - sometimes I can be that purist.

I actually enjoyed the trailer, and I've read the Graphic novel a couple of times. They were clearly doing some things for the fans and some for the general public. They showed us each of the main characters in action (fans), but also included a higher percentage of action sequences than are likely in the movie so that it would be more marketable to the general public. I don't think the trailer sheds any large amount of light on what the actual film is going to be like. On a side note, I loved the music choice.

I think the trailer's purpose was more to establish the tone and style of the film rather than the plot. After all, did any of you who read the graphic novel actually find it more special because of the plot, or because of the tone, theme, and characters? I would argue the novel's plot was not nearly as remarkable as these other elements.

Farhad2000says...

Best to really separate this film from its source material. You'd feel much better.

I read V for Vendetta, 300 and this. None of the movies could capture the atmosphere created in the novels.

This won't either. It will just be full of ridiculous action scenes and pretty graphics. Because honestly there is no way he could compress the novel into the full movie.

Sarzysays...

Well, judging by the reaction here and across the internet, I seem to be in the minority on this one. I guess Zack Syder's bombastic visual style just rubs me the wrong way -- his overuse of slow-mo, his overly-stylized use of colour manipulation, the George Lucas-esque overuse of CGI, giving everything a glossy, artificial sheen... I guess I was hoping he'd tone himself down for Watchmen, but instead he seems to have turned it up to 11.

But I can see why people who aren't turned off by the visuals might feel differently. It does seem -- at least -- that he's sticking close to the source material, in his own garish way.

Your favorite BOOK? It's a comic dude. Get out of your parents basement and see the world, seriously!

Ooooo, lookie here, seems this little comic book made Time Magazine's Top 100 Novel list. Those immature editors at Time better get out of their mother's basement and see the world!

Farhad2000says...

I agree with Sarzy on the look, I always thought The Watchmens colorful 80esque pallete was a dig on the Golden Age of comics. But for a film I would go with something more gritter.

If they fuck up Rorschach's charcter I will be pissed.

antonyesays...

I love the {comic} book and I'm excited by the film... will it live up to the book? Hell no; it'll be cut down, stylised and completely different to how I "saw" it in my head, but I still want to go and see it.

It's only the trailer - nobody really sees/misses a movie on the strength of the trailer alone, right?

Fjnbksays...

The * terrible tag is too subjective right now. Nothing reeks of poor production values or incompetence in this trailer. We can re-add the * terrible tag if we need to after the movie comes out.

Hello . . . yeah, over here . . . um, not trying to be a bother or anything, but why is Batman and the Twin Towers in that movie? I'm pretty sure those aren't there anymore -- the Twin Towers, not Batman -- there was this thing on TV a couple of year ago about it. I don't think Batman had anything to do with it, 'tho. Because Batman's pretty awesome and everything, but I don't even HE could knock down two 110 story buildings all by himself. Maybe if the Joker helped, he could. I dunno. Um, didn't I just see the Joker in this movie, too? I'm pretty confused. Should I maybe smoke a lot of dope before I see this movie? I think I will anyway . . . just better that way. Uh, thanks and everything!

I have never read the watchmen, although I think I've heard of them before (I am heavy into anime). When I first saw this trailer (in HD too) my jaw droped.

After educating myself about the series from wiki, I will probably try and secure myself the graphic novel before the movie, however from what I've read, this trailer is nothing but win. It reminds me of dark city really, and so thats why I have some hope for it. IMO they have the director who can bring the vision of an awesome movie.. however what remains to be seen is if the script was any good to begin with. The guys who have been public about it have been pretty serious in trying to keep alot of key moments and scenes from the novel, especialy during the editing process, and the movie is planned to be 2 hours and 30 minutes (Its currently sitting at 3 hours). Its a nice number I think (I love 3 hours movies.. the more content the better imo) but I am obviously expecting things to be cut from the novel, and I am sure not everyone will be happy.

Throbbinsays...

I always love the guys on the internet who like to criticize everything they see as "unrefined", "pedestrian", or some other snobby adjective.

Like the punk who posted the video here. He despises this damn trailer and it's damn director and it's damn visual style so much that he had to post it here at the sift just to let everyone know how much he despises these things.

And to top it off, everyone jumps on the bandwagon - reminds me of those 2 nerdy-nerd-nerds in "Hitch" ("Disgusting!").

Get off it ladies - you may amuse each other with your repeated and well-articulated attempts to distance yourself from the unwashed masses with your views on this and that - but to those of us who are smart AND socially well adjusted - you seem like assholes.

Nice sift - movie looks cool.

moonsammysays...

I've read Watchmen several times and agree that it is one of the strongest stories written in the medium - and I'm personally quite excited for the movie after viewing the trailer. I was absolutely dreading it when I first heard about the fact the film was even being made, but this gives me hope that it actually might do the source material some level of justice. Will it live up to the book? Of course not. When does a movie ever (LotR is as close as it gets, from what I've seen)?

If nothing else, I'm curious to see how the characters are played. Rorschach's small bit of dialogue towards the end seems to fit quite well, so I remain cautiously optimistic.

my15minutessays...

hey ^Throbbin?
before you yourself pass judgment, you might want to find out if the "punk" actually does "criticize everything they see ...", by clicking on the CH.

sarzy's as entitled to his opinion as you or anyone else, and you may find he's not actually the nattering naybob that you think him to be, based on one critique.

and is it possible that some already shared sarzy's concerns, independent of his analysis, and not that "everyone jumps on the bandwagon"?

sorry, i didn't see "Hitch". but which of the "unwashed masses" are you referring to? the "smart AND socially well adjusted" one?

maybe all you really had to say was: "Nice sift - movie looks cool."

and guess what - i'd agree. i just think Watchmen is too much material for a feature-length movie, and is best enjoyed in the original medium. which is basically the original author's take on it, as well. even a well-written script for this, would have to be a fairly Cliff's Notes approach.

Sarzysays...

Throbbin: just because someone (or several people) dislikes something you like, that doesn't invalidate your opinion. Go outside, take a deep breath.

P.S. I didn't like Hitch, either. I'll bet now your world is spinning out of control.

xxovercastxxsays...

I've just read Watchmen this week and have now come back to watch the trailer again. It looks pretty damn good; certainly very faithful from what little we've seen so far.

I do have to agree with Spoco, though, that this trailer doesn't really help people who haven't read the book. This is more of a fan-service trailer.

NicoleBeesays...

Oh man, I just spotted the twin towers (??) this time around after finally reading the comics to get primed for the movie. Does this mean they are still setting it in alternate-timeline 1985?
