Clever Microsoft ad

Now they just need to convince me that there's space in a crowded Android/iOS market ...
Xaxsays...

I don't think it's clever. I expect WM7 to be a piece of shit, as was my impression the first moment I first caught a glimpse of the ugly thing. I want to know why Microsoft thinks it's better than what's already on the market.

I actually quite like the look of Windows Mobile 7 - they have contasted the look and feel against the swishy icons and gloss of Android and iOS - I am sure they will go after the marketshare lost from WM6.5 - and I think they could well do it.

I think Windows Phone 7 could be very good, although I concede the look may put people off, I think Microsift succeeded in giving something different enough - I will try it out for sure (Though I do not think I'll switch - very happy with my Android handset )

Really?

Ha, I love the Microsoft hate here.

I like the ad, think it's funny, plus I do like the message too. There's another ad, with 'season of the witch' playing in it, which just ends with the tagline 'a phone to save us from our phones' or whatever it is... and I didn't get how Windows Phone 7 was supposed to be any better. But this ad, with the addition of the info it's all about 'glance and go' makes sense. If the whole idea is that you can get the info you want from your phone super quick and get on with life, that's a good sales line.

Myself? I don't see the point of going with Windows Phone 7 over Android... it's got a long way to go to catch up on the Market, and I just won't touch an iPhone... overpriced by far.

yellowcsays...

I have no problems with Win7 and I think it looks great. This ad is funny till 0:53, then it just shows you a home screen that you can spend an equal amount of time "reallying" on and then the joke is on them too? Odd choice of marketing

But hey, I guess they just need some sort of angle to advertise and this is the only thing they could find.

pmkierstsays...

Wow, I am totally figuring the title is an oxymoron but I'll be damned, it is clever.

However, it also seems to insult us mobile junkies ... those ppl aren't staring at their phones because they are slow, they are staring because they enjoy it. A more efficient phone will just pack more content in the same time....

braindonutsays...

After seeing all the info pouring out of the launch event, I think Microsoft is actually making a pretty good case for their phone. But we'll see next month whether or not it can walk the walk.

Whether or not it could dethrone the iPhone - I doubt it. But it does seem well positioned to make Android the wal-mart of smartphones, as a friend of mine put it. And, personally, I like the UI. It has great motion graphics and it's creative, unlike the giant wall of icons we have on other smart phones. I can't wait to try it out.

Plus, having one of the most easy development environments (Silverlight) and widespread game development toolkits (XNA) on the market is going to be a nice ace in the pocket when it comes to app development.

Deanosays...

Phone-staring is a well observed point from which to market something they want to be seen as fresh and innovative. So yes, a smart and clever conceit for the ad.

I have an Android phone which I'm over now. I still fundamentally want a phone to make calls and text messages but the added functions are very useful. The problem with Android is that it's too rough around the edges and not everything works.

If Microsoft can get the balance between controlling the platform and treating their users like adults I see myself switching. Still, no copy/paste in this version? What are they thinking?

Raaaghsays...

The new windows mobile OS looks awesome.

This ad has an excellent messge - I HATE fucking around with my phone.

A phone that aims to get me in and out, is a phone with a admirable goal.

Simple as that.

CLEVER?

Who is the marketing fob that is pimping stupid ads, and calling them clever?

What kind of mental deficiencies do you have? Microsoft is saying,

OUR PHONE OS IS SO SHITTY YOU WON'T SPEND ANY TIME USING IT!!
IT'S BASICALLY LIKE A CLAMSHELL FROM THE 90s

Oh, that is clever, eh...

I neither am a fanboy nor a hater, the advert got a giggle from me when the ball hit the guy's head, other than that it indicated more to me that phones are distracting us from enjoying the real pleasures and experiences in life in favour of virtual ones. Surely a phone company doesn't want to do that.

Deanosays...

They are not saying that. The idea is that your phone sucks too much of your time in return for the information you want.
I see this all time. The blend of OS and web browser is far from smooth on Android, updating apps is a pain on 2.1 and getting things organised on the various screens til you've reduced the amount of steps you need to perform common tasks seems like it could be addressed by designing the OS properly in the first place.

From the videos I've seen this seems to be what Windows Phone Series 7 is all about. You won't have to find utilities to fix the inadequacies of the shipped software.

Well, that's the promise anyway.

As other have said before, the whole idea of this commercial is that their OS is so fast and efficient at delivering information, that you don't have to waste time on your phone (like you do on others), so you have time for other, more important things.
I'm not sure about this interface though. Maybe after getting used to it it's really better. I don't know...

edit: spot-on @Deano

HAHAHA! I never looked at it that way. I usually spend time on my phone because I prefer to do that over what I'd be doing otherwise.

Maybe the ad missed with me because I'm still using a "regular" cell phone that just calls people and sends messages..

Regardless, the ad is ass backwards because it essentially shows people missing out on life by playing with their stupid phones all the time, but the ad itself is FOR another stupid phone. As if to say, HEY QUIT MESSING WITH YOUR DAMN PHONES ALL THE TIME... (unless it's our phone)

This is what I thought, it's basically trying to make out that it's the lesser evil. Surely a good marketing campaign would focus on it being amazingly good, and actually showing its features being useful/better than competition.

Plus if the guy who was in bed on the phone with his hot wife in front of him was real, he must be gay.

Meh I don't even have a phone, using enough things atm that cause cancer.

joedirtsays...

WTF? I don't spend time on my phone, waiting for stuff to open. I am reading or clicking. I'm not spending time defragging or scrolling through menus trying to find stuff. The problem isn't the OS, it is that phones are useful.. from typing texts to reading, to games or cool apps.

Microsoft is literally saying, we can put everything on one ugly blue page you won't want to look at.

Yes, broken, ancient, or less functional phones will require less time to use them.

You guys are missing the point. People don't buy things because of what they are, they buy them because of WHY (or why they think) the company made them. People buy Apple products because they know Apple strives to make their products easy to use, innovative, and stylish. That's why people buy an ipod and not a friggin creative zen.

Microsoft's ad is good because it's telling people WHY their design is different. They don't have to convince everyone, and plenty of people won't be persuaded by their ad/design. But, you can be sure there are PLENTY of people out there who don't like their iphone/droid/whatever and are open to checking out something new.

steroidgsays...

Perhaps I'm just thick, but I can't find anything in this ad that shows how is this phone better than any other phone. All it has is some guy claiming it's designed to work in a mysterious way! Just how is this ad clever? I dislike apple as much as Microsoft, but they sure do have better ads.
