Blind card mechanic fools Penn & Teller

yellowc says...

I'm guessing the cards have a tell etched in to the sides, he does a subtle thumb riffle at about 4:47 while distracting everyone. The idea that the cards are well and truly shuffled drops everyones guard for that 5seconds after.

The "playing seconds" I'm sure is a large role in the final bit as well and at normal speed with his technique, it really is impossible to notice.

I did notice in his last riffle shuffle and cut, he kept the cards in the same order, didn't pull the top half off the bottom, but pulled both halves just shuffled apart.

Adam Ruins Everything - Why Baby Formula Isn't Poison

yellowc says...

Talk about over extending an issue. The vast majority of the boycott stems around developing countries lack of sanitisation options. This has little to do with baby formula itself.

Let's destroy the reputation of a product that helps millions of babies and the stern non-use might actually be harming some babies, so we can put a maybe tiny dent in one of the biggest food companies in the world! Never mind all the other companies that make formula!

Yay! What a great idea!

How about they focus their charitable efforts in to providing cleaner sources of water in those developing countries instead, seems a tad more useful.

Seems like there could be more talked about why formula got a bad name. Thanks, Nestle...

Toxicity Comparison (This little will KILL you)

yellowc says...

Interesting but not terribly useful without context (on the smaller scale, 1L of vodka is pretty easy to understand).

How much venom does a hornet typically release in one attack? Obviously not the lethal dose but still, it'd be more interesting to visualise how many hornet stings it takes to kill me.

How much caffeine in a typical cup of coffee? How much salt in an average wrap? etc

Ubuy: an Arab online shopping website to buy stuff from US

This was the right time to bring up a different issue. Well done.

The funny part is, it's not the racist guards forcing his wife into covering up most of her body.

Go on a UAE flight, and every little bit of a woman is blurred in the films, but they have no issues showing men's genitals.

Disgusting woman hating backwards ass culture.

Epic Anti-texting rant

yellowc says...

Same tactic cops and other educational media tries, doesn't really seem to work I'm afraid. It's the old, "yeah but that driver is stupid, I'm too awesome to ever do that" mentality.

I don't think this is ever getting solved until self driving cars take over, I just don't see any attempt at stopping sinking in really. Luckily more optimistic people are in charge though, keep up the good fight.

Dog Feels Petting Instead of Abuse For The First Time

yellowc says...

It's not about guilt but if you eat meat, you're making the world a worse place!

I hope you don't need me to point out the contradiction any further.

Like I said above, it's not about guilt, it's about making people aware that they have the power to change the world for the better.

Dog Feels Petting Instead of Abuse For The First Time

yellowc says...

Word of advice, if you want to try to convince people of something, don't use guilt logic as your weapon. When you guilt some one their instinct is to go defensive, not to listen with open ears.

I'm trying to point out(and failing obviously lol): If we feel so bad for this poor dog, why do we turn a blind eye to farm animals that are mistreated and killed? They all feel pain and have emotional responses just the same.

We all like eating meat and butter, but is that worth the animals suffering and dying for it? (especially when there are some great alternatives. Nut butters, coconut butters, cashew spreads you name it, margarine at worst case) That's a decision for you to make. :-)

If a dog beater told you that "animals kill each other in nature all the time" would you accept that answer? Would that stop you from feeling bad for the dog?

When someone at the Yulin dog festival says "it's my tradition" or "I like the taste" do you accept that?

Then why do we make the same statements for cows? (don't worry, I remember yelling "lions tho" at vegans, so I'm not pointing fingers)

I just want to raise awareness about the horrors of animal agriculture and it's knock-on effects to the planet. And that we have a choice, and the power to change the world. We don't need to wait for governments or laws, we can make this change now, ourselves and there are no down sides, only wins.

It's just a matter of changing a few ingredients

How we feel about modern art most of the time

yellowc says...

You're probably looking for "Contemporary Art" but this piece might well be "Modern" by definition.

Anyway read this book: https://www.amazon.com/Million-Stuffed-Shark-Economics-Contemporary/dp/0230620590

Spoiler Alert: Rich people scamming other rich people who then scam other rich people later. It's a cycle of perpetuating false value because unless you're the very last person ever to hold the item, it benefits everyone to keep the false value alive.

The nuisances allude me as I read this book quite some time ago but it's fairly interesting.

Cassie - Next Generation Robot

yellowc says...

Can these people stop kicking these robots when they want to test stability? I mean how archival abuse footage do you want to give the propaganda machines when they start the uprising for robot kind?

Just like nudge them with a soft pillow with a smiley face on it or something.

Videosift's Sarzy's Top Ten Films Of 2016

I upvoted for Bottom 10 alone.

My 2016 movies was nothing but blockbusters, so this list was quite helpful in suggesting some lesser known stuff. Green Room seems extremely interesting!

Olympian Sacrifices Chance To Win Race To Help His Brother

yellowc says...

Ah thanks, that's an interesting rule.

There is no benefit to the helper but quite clearly a big benefit to the person being helped. He retained 2nd place in this case which is not insignificant, it seems strange to do that with assistance.

I do like it but it is surprising to learn there is that level of compassion written in to the rules.

"Following an appeal by the Spanish Triathlon Federation to disqualify Jonathan Brownlee for accepting assistance from Alistair Brownlee to finish the 2016 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Cozumel, during which Jonathan struggled with heat exhaustion in the final portion of the run, the ITU competition jury unanimously ruled against disqualifying Jonathan. The ITU Competition Jury made this decision in accordance to Appendix K, Rule 7, which states that athletes can receive help from another athlete, Technical Official or Race Official."

How free games are designed to make money

yellowc says...

Well I'm glad she added that Pokemon Go has a fairly reasonable model, I feel like that was the strong hand of Nintendo.

If you take away location differences, which there is a glaring issue with at the moment. Two players in the same reasonably supported area, the major difference in needing to spend money is how much you want to walk and that's the core of the game.

So if you want to play the game as designed (with no false limitations), you can generally play for free.

She's also not wrong that because of all that, I actually was inclined to make a purchase, it was small and I spent it on the non-expendable upgrades but I've been pretty anti-freeium in the past, so it was a big step for me to give such a game money.

I think Pokemon Go has certainly obliterated that 1-2% pay money statistic. I'm positive reports will eventually show it had a much higher stat.

It's not a saint, you can still gain a sizeable advantage by spending a lot of cash and these elements are still very much targeting the addiction of whales (expendable, short durations, element of luck with egg hatching). But it is a refreshing change for how they treat the "other" group of players.

Smarter Every Day -- Why you put on your oxygen mask first

yellowc says...

Except to me it looked like Destin's eyed showed a lot of pure terror but he simply could not put the mask back on. His mouth looks to be grinning involuntary but even as the looming death approaches, you can see the smile drops at @8:28.

It may still be more humane but I don't think it looks that peaceful.

There was a programme about the death penalty hosted by Michael Portillo a few years back which pondered weather hypoxia was the more humane way of executing prisoners - it's weird that your brain can be in such a state of euphoria and intoxication when your survival depends on something as basic as correcting o2 levels.
