Help Wanted

Dear Sifters - it's come to the attention of @lucky760 and myself that we need some help. There is work to be done in our great community that gets back-burnered, support questions that go unanswered and great ideas that go unplumbed. For these reasons and more - we're looking to add one or two community managers to our official staff roster here at VideoSift. This would be a great after-hours job for someone who cares deeply about VideoSift and well ... let's be honest, is here anyway. Here are the qualities we're looking for in community managers:

  • A deep understanding of how VideoSift works on a community level and a passion for its continued success

  • You don't need to be super-technical, but you should know your way around a web browser and have ideas about how interactions through a website should work

  • A willingness to jump into disputes or community issues and hear all viewpoints fairly without bias - setting aside prejudices or grudges

  • A willingness to spend ~ 10 hours per week on VideoSift doing your community management thing.

What do you get out of it?

  • Unbridled, limitless power! - um no - not really, but you will have *full* admin rights. This means you will be behind the curtain at VideoSift, able to use your admin powers to fix up problems and help people out. There is a lot of satisfaction that goes with that I can tell you personally. We'll modify the UI to indicate who the managers are, to make it easy for people to know who can help them in a thread.

  • You get to be part of the VideoSift staff team - that means you'll be in on the discussions that Lucky and I have about the future of VideoSfit - changes and updates we want to make etc.

  • A little bit of money - seriously, I mean a little bit - don't quit your day job. However, you would be in on the ground floor - when we conquer the world, you're on the team, and there's nowhere to go but up from here.

  • You get to say that you are a community manager on VideoSift - one of the best communities in the world. Update your LinkedIn profile, send out those resumes, you're doing something cool and the world will notice. Both Lucky and I would agree that VideoSift has done great things for our day job careers.

If you're interested, please PM me. Tell me why you'd like the job and let me know the direction you'd like to see VideoSift heading. You can provide an old school resume if you want, but don't feel it's required. You can include links to ideas you think are great within VideoSift or on the wider Net if you want. Lucky and I will get together and review candidates and then set up some time to talk with you if you're successful. If you'd like to nominate/encourage someone to apply - drop their name in the comments.

Also, just to be clear - there's no connection between star points or achievements and suitability for the job - the most important thing is your passion and energy. *frontpage

Too bad Ant isn't feeling upto it, because I would have nominated him for sure. He's always fixing up dead embeds and incorrect channels.

Who else is there... Bareboards2, Dystopianfuturetoday and gwiz665. They are very active maintaining the Sift. Thank you guys.

And if you're looking for someone who will forever remain loyal to VideoSift, then Choggie is your man LOL! That crazy f*ck will never leave the sift! He's got the bans to prove it! LOL LOL

Well boy howdy! Had you asked me this a couple years ago when I visited the sift 5 times every minute I would totally have signed up, and subsequently abused the full extent of my powers to mold VS into my personal playground.

But alas I'm afraid I have become a bit disenfranchised from VS and though I still have a great desire to be a part of improving and monitoring Videosift. As well as fond memories that literally stole hours from my life. I feel I have been removed from the community for far too long to take up this mantle.

Kudos to those who are still active in the Sift, a part of me misses the interactions among this tight-knit community.

It's always nice if it's a time zone that covers a patch that Lucky and I don't have, but definitely not a restriction as Lucky and I are already almost opposite.

I have a question for @dag or @lucky760 regarding the given job offer. Is there a restriction or preference regarding international applicants ? ( timezone issues, ... )

What drugs or favors would it take for you to change your mind?

Once upon a time I would have jumped at the chance. Now I don't have the time to invest.

I would add however, that I would have happily filled a position voluntarily, no remuneration required.

I'm not as active as I used to be and with my history, I would probably not be the best candidate. Besides I have a full time day job, so it's hard for me to put in some actual hours.

The main thing needed in a community manager is to put aside their personal differences and put the sift first.

I'm not entirely clear what this involves that we don't already do when we have full star powers; maybe the greater powers like Un-dupeof and unban etc. I suppose.

I'm considering if it's something I'd want to do in my free time.

    So whats your explaination?

I'm too busy procrastinating from my other duties by watching videosift videos to be of any use unfortunately. Also admin priveledges always make be go a bit power crazy. They say power corrupts. Admin powers corrupt adminutely. or something.

Is this the thread where we explain Why we can't take on the job?

oh it is ! good, I have the right place.

Thank you very much for the trust put in your words. I was a bit surprised to read that entry, let me tell you why (I was searching for the sarcasm mark ).

This account is very very young and still waiting to gain the reputation it currently lacks. The person behind the account, has been around much much longer but just recently decided to participate in an active manner.
Since the cookies were eaten there is no verifiable source for that claim. It is true that I favor a future where we have a thriving VideoSift (Passion, check). Sadly, I can not say that there is a knowledge of the community gears (With focus on the sift) good enough to be called deep.

So, in short I lack reputation and a deep knowledge regarding the VideoSift. From the perspective of a poweruser this has to be a "no go".
However, your nomination needs to be rewarded since it enhanced my motivation regarding this option even further. I am currently spending time on learning more about VS. Directly after that, I'll apply ( In about 2 - 3 days. I have a project that needs attention right now. ).

    Is this a marketing position??

    chingalera says...

I invite one of the two woman who spend more time on here than half the account-holders combined, to block both the Petsami.com and RussianDashCam.com websites in their browsers, and spend some of their sifting-time cleaning the place up

(Hold the potpourri and lampe bergers' and no scented-diffusers, please!)

My advice would be to take at least the top three candidates and give them the position. Then each person isn't as burdened and they are less likely to burn out (or it would take longer). If one of them doesn't work out you still have the other two/three. If one has a family emergency for a week the others can take over
    Fault Tolerance if you will.

Very good point. I know many females who participate in online gaming or forums who choose neutral or masculine names and avatars so they are treated equally.

I also have many male friends who create female alter egos to get special treatment online - hand holding, gifts and ESPECIALLY an army of White Nights.

You mean you haven't had any applicants that have presented themselves as female. You really have no way of knowing, do you?

I personally know the queen-like member with admin-like powers gained through tenure on a site still going hard from back in the D & D days, first green-screen PC's days-All text generated scenarios-she's so much a pillar there, that if she failed to log-on at least once a week, the com-log would be replete with half the forum buzzing with tales of her glory and the other half crying, "I can't make a decision until she logs on again!"

Women of the internet have the capacity to wield extraordinary influence beyond their mere sex-appeal as a repose from the mundane, testosterone-gone-awry fare crowding the place...

I apologize if my above previous comments in any way might have influenced some insane decision any woman on this site may be about to make-I exercise my rights under mischief, to plead the Bart Simpson defense in this situation....

    ant jokingly says...

That is why I am a female worker ant when I am working, and a male ant when not working.

Domanda? Will the chosen candidate remain anonymous to the community? Will we be able to pester'em s'wat I'm gettin' at....

BTW, both bdag and rlucky are quite timely in their responses to inquiries or problems and we'd have to expect the same from the help...
