Google Plus Authorship

Attention Sifters! We need the help of you, our trusted community, to improve our Google rank. All you need is a Google Plus (G+) account and at least a Bronze Star, but what you'll get in return is an @videosift.com email address and a warm and fuzzy feeling for helping the Sift stay alive.

G+ has created an authorship program that allows people who contribute content elsewhere online to be linked to their content in Google's search results. What this means is that if your VideoSift posts match a Google search, your post will show up with your photo (as you've set it up at G+) and your name.

Here's how it works (in chronological order):

You
- submit a request in a comment here to express your willingness to participate
- need a G+ account - create one at http://plus.google.com if you don't yet have one
- update your VideoSift profile to include your real name; it must match your real name as specified in your G+ account

We
- create a [username]@videosift.com email forwarder (to your account's current email address)

Once we inform you that your email has been created (by sending you a message at that address):

You
- open https://plus.google.com/authorship and submit your new @videosift.com email address

That's it! Now whenever someone is viewing your posts, they'll see your real name, but only if they are not logged in. Members will continue to always only see just your username.

If you are at least a Bronze Star, please participate as it will be a great help to VideoSift (and it won't cost you a penny!).

Please keep in mind that creating your email address is a manual process so if there are lots of requests, it may take a little time before yours is created, but we'll get to you, so be patient.

As a fun treat, perhaps we will have an occasional G+ Hangout together and video chat in a group!

Excellent! Thanks @kulpims, @oritteropo, and @youdiejoe. You are all setup with your new VideoSift email addresses. Thanks for participating!

Please note that G+ "requires" that you use your (or a) real name, so don't be surprised if they threaten to disable your account if you're using an obviously fake name.

And remember that if you ever do change your name at G+ you'll need to change it on VS as well for this authorship thing to work.

This is why I don't use G+.

All I know about it is they threatened Miss Cellania of Neatorama to use her real name, which she refused to do because no one knows her by any other name online. Dunno whatever happened after that.

Glad if they've backed off. They don't need to adopt *every* aspect of Facebook.

They did once suggest a crackdown, but backed away from it.

It's facebook that requires it, G+ is the refuge for the pseudonymous

I tried to create a G+ account (a month ago) with a PSudo and they threatened to delete my account within seven days unless I corrected it. I deleted it in stead.

I may go back in an create a new account again. - I'll let you know once I do. - cheers!

CNET has an article suggesting alternatives, and the Google so long and thanks for all the fish notice suggests using Google Takeout to get your data.

I read another article which suggests Feedly, RSSowl and NewsBlur as other alternatives... and also that feedly has been quick to capitalise on this, and has put up a guide to migrating from google reader to feedly

On the day they killed Google Reader may I just wish the very worst to Google Plus.

I'm using feedly already. The desktop web version wasn't to my taste but I quite like the Android version. Still it's simply not as good as Reader.
Old Reader is another choice but yesterday it was a bit busy.

I don't use google+, don't want to use google+, but if somehow it generates something for the Sift by virtue of linking me by some mystical means, I'm in.

The founders have done so much for us as a community, and me personally, it seems the least I can do.

Everyone who is participating should have received an email by now (and in less than a day from the time you commented above). If you have not received an email, please let me know. And check your spam folder in case it landed there by mistake. Also, keep in mind that it should have arrived at the private email address you've specified in your account preferences.

@Lilithia

Thanks!

Great thing for a prospective employer to see when they google your name.
As much as I like Videosift, this is exactly the reason why I don't want to link it to my name.
I do +1 posts whenever I remember to do that.
