World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria (Preview Trailer)

Ooooh! Level cap raised to 90, new continent, new class (monks), new race (Pandaren). A lot of people seem to be down on playable pandas, but I think this looks pretty damn cool.

RFlaggsays...

Dang it... looks like I lost the bet with myself. I had figured Mists would be an iOS type game and not an expansion... but was right that if it was an expansion they would make them playable by both sides...

Yogisays...

I cancelled my account last week...this won't bring me back to the game. I'm off to try SW:TOR and if that isn't great well I guess I'll have to play something else. I liked WoW a lot which is why I played it for 6 years...that's enough for one game I think.

Sarzysays...

You people are all nuts. Maybe it's my general interest in Asian culture speaking, but this looks pretty awesome to me. I honestly do not get why everyone is reacting like this is the worst thing since Jar Jar Binks. Someone seriously needs to explain that to me. What looks so bad about this?

RFlaggsays...

Yeah, I don't know why people are reacting badly to this. The Panderen have been part of the brewfest and we've known they exist, so no surprise they finally made them playable.
I personally don't know if it will bring me back. If Star Wars: The Old Republic sucks, then I may come back after this comes out... and I activated a free account to play with off and on for now since my regular account is deactivated.
I look forward to Diablo III more at the moment, thanks to SW:TOR, but if it wasn't for that, I would probably be more excited. I do PVE only, I don't do dungeons and certainly never raids, and hate PVP, so some of the other upcoming games are of little interest to me. WoW is the only MMO that has any appeal to solo PVE players, the others seem to favor PVP or dungeons and raids with groups (I guess one would say I should look at Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age, but I like how WoW plays more). I really wish they were releasing information on Titan this year though... even a tease would do for now, but they said they aren't ready to do anything about that yet.

So, let me get this straight. Pandas as a playable race, and a pokemon pet battle system. I got a feeling GW2 is going to get a massive injection of players round about the time this comes out.

Crosswordssays...

Pandarans have been part of the lore since WarCraft III, and people have been wondering when they'd be implemented in World of Warcraft for years. So while it may seem like they're trying to do some cheap cash in on kung-fu panda, hell maybe they are, but its not like players who have any sense of the lore didn't expect they'd show up at some point.

Draxsays...

Hello Pândârthâs,

The situation is dire! No one will mate!! We
need you to run to the top of the hill and
grab the ancient weed known as Viagrolla.
But first, I must ask the you take care of
some murlocs who have been plagueing the
village as of late. Thin them out by killing
at least 10 of their numbers, and try to fill
these 3 jars with the slime off their backs.
I like to call it M.Y. Jelly; we'll need that
too for this plan to work.

Good luck!

Yeah. It sorta makes sense that they are available for both races (though it may smack of laziness to some people), since they were neutral heroes (lore-wise and in-game) to begin with in Frozen Throne.

I've been done with WoW since the release of Cata so I feel nothing but indifference towards it, but the original EQ is on expansion #17; so I suspect WoW will certainly continue for awhile if it's comparative success is anything to go by.

I'm glad they at least added a new class.

Looks like shit but Blizzard can polish any turd into a gem. Im not interested mostly because I stopped playing real WoW in March and every once in a while log into a decent free Wrath server. I spent over a grand and a half on WoW so I think that is way over my financial barrier for video games.

Since you asked...

Since launch, WoW has been a remarkably shallow game. It's success is attributable to oooh, shiny!, furry culture and, most importantly, people's tendencies to gambling addiction. The WoW team is kinda infamous for not coming up with any new or interesting ideas.

So when they suddenly whip out a new expansion that's based on an April fools prank by one of their artists from 6 or so years ago, yeah, it seems especially cheap. No matter... the furries will gobble this up and the money will continue to roll in.

Well sure, I mean, I can understand why some people dislike WoW in general. And of course those people aren't going to like this, because ultimately it's more of the same.

What I'm asking is why people who are actually fans of WoW are reacting so vehemently to this.

I like wow in general. I played the damn thing for 2500+ hours, but while they have had many silly elements mixed in with their more "high fantasy", this puts the silly front and center.

I think this is way sillier than anything they've done before, partly because it's so "centered" in view. Have small references and general sillyness in the outskirts of the game is just fine, but dammit, wow was a perfectly good game, but now it's gone silly!

@Sarzy

I actually re-activated my account a couple weeks ago, and I've been playing through the "Cataclysm" content with some friends, but this is actually going to send me away from WoW, possibly for good.

It actually has nothing to do with the zones, to be honest I think that's kinda cool. But the fact that the Pandas can join either faction seems kinda meh to me in the first place, but they're also once again streamlining the game so that it's again got far less choices.

WoW has gotten progressively easier over the years, some changes for the better, some obviously just to make it easier. Mounts acquired at far lower levels and lowered cost, dungeons streamlined to be made shorter, and far easier, flying mounts in Azeroth, and finally the biggest one, they completely re-vamped the talent system, giving spells you'd normally get at level 60 at level 10.

Now, with this expansion, they're once again re-vamping the talent trees so that instead of having your 31 points (reduced from something like 70 points) they're once again reducing that to about.. 10-15, Essentially forcing you to play a certain style and once again making the game rediculously easier.

gwiz665says...

Because Pandas are pandas, not some fantasy creature. It was all well and good when it was just a little off-shoot in Warcraft 3, and hell, they could even have an homage in WoW, whatever, it's all good. But to put it so front and center, makes the whole thing silly to me. At least Draenei were something entirely different.

I seem to be having the complete opposite reaction than you - I can't understand how people can take it seriously.

I will give the expansion this, though, mechanics-wise it looks to be a big improvement.

How did we go from Trolls and Undead to Pandas? I blame the Chinese market!
The sad part is that Alterac Valley came out 5 years ago, and it was more fun then (with shittier computers) than WoW will ever be. Vanilla AV is definite proof, to me at least, that more is not necessarily better.

I get the impression none of you have played Warcraft 3. You're doing it wrong.

Even in Warcraft 3 the Pandarens were an April Fools joke. They were never seriously a part of the universe.

WoW has been loosing subscribers hand over fist for the last year, and this expansion is clearly their way of trying to appeal to a new audience. They have some very serious competition coming up this year and next that are sure to take millions more people away from them. Further proof is the offer of all the bonuses and guaranteed beta and free Diablo 3 for anyone that buys a year long subscription. They are trying their best to pad their income until the new expansion hits. You watch, the game will be advertised on Cartoon Network and Disney. Titan itself is rumored to be 'very casual' as well.

Blizzard has jumped the shark.

Don't blame the Chinese market because they will probably BAN WoW because it now has Pandas. Apparently you cannot depict a panda dying in Chinese media or something, they don't like it. So it's going to be interesting to see what happens when this expansion launches in China.

Heh. I remember something like that for the original Guild Wars. There was a Panda pet in the early beta of the game that had to be removed because the Chinese didn't like it. Or something.

Oh wow (no pun),
I knew that WoW was altered to remove all skulls/bones from the Chinese version, but I was not aware of the Panda issue. Thanks!
