Soldier surprises son in class

What you are about to see is a surprise for a little boy whose dad has been in Iraq. The scene is a small town in northwest Washington state. US Navy Ensign Bill Hawse who's spent the past seven months deployed to Iraq decided to surprise his six year old son John at school...

...It was the sweetest homecoming for a sailor who had been gone too long, and for a little boy who had dreamed of this day with his dad.

WTF what is the piont of the clip ? that children miss there parents. ? what context is the been used in. is it a statemnt to say bring the troops back from iraq. seems like pritty piontless stuff to be on the news. maby actualy news wud be a good story.

The most moving video I've ever seen. I'm left wondering if it should exist - I sort of hate the guy who zoomed in on the face of a boy so overwhelmed by joy and shock and relief and love that he can only weep and cling to his daddy.

I'd also object to the label "cute." Cute implies a cloying, sugary, somewhat artificial quality. This is gut-wrenchingly true.

bl968says...

I disagree on the removal of cute tag. Yes, the video makes you cry, however the little boy is crying tears of joy not sadness. If the boy was crying due to his father leaving for Iraq then yes it would indeed be a sad event and the cute tag would be inappropriate.

rickegeesays...

true, but "cute" on this site really applies more to things that you would see on cuteoverload . . .this is very touching, but not cute.

kittens cuddling, otters flirting, pandas sliding down slides, puppies drooling . . .now that is cute.

and this one is going straight to the top. very nice sift.

westy: Does it have to actually have a damn point? Geeze... not everything has to have some overarching context or greater meaning.

This kid's dad has been away fighting a war that should never have been for 7 months and surprises him and the class that has been writing to him. End of story. (Of course, I added in my own feelings about the war there).

I almost damn cried I tells yah.

My boys would be beside themselves if I wasn't around for that long... so it pulls at the old heart strings to see a boy who loves his Dad get emotional at his return.

It's good to see the love a buy can have for his dad, and that's the only 'message' this video needs to have

LadyBugsays...

i can't even put into words how i feel ... *wipes eyes & blows nose*

i bet that little boy is going to look back on this memory and it's going to feel like he sailed through the air getting to his daddy ... precious!

Dignant_Pinksays...

i love the way he just immediately gets up, without saying a word. he gives a little half hearted push on the chair, but then goes running, arms outstretched. i remember that feeling, where all you had to do was hold out your arms and everything else just went away. damn it, i cried.

wallacesays...

Not trying to quibble, but I don't think this should be treated (or tagged) as political, either. Saying, "Look, Mr. Bush, at what your unholy war hath wrought" heartlessly exploits this terribly human moment.

Which, I still say, should have been utterly private.

Goofball_Jonessays...

What I'd like to know is what program Westy uses to do those creative misspellings? I mean, he's doing it on purpose we all know this...but he has to be using a program to screw up the spellings because to actually misspell everything to that degree would have to take you a long time to actually write the damn thing.

I mean, it's KILLER misspellings Westy, but tell us your secret and what program you use? I've seen programs that do misspellings and typos, but the program you use does the misspellings in a VERY creative way like "pritty piontless". That's just classic.

InvaderSilsays...

I was tearing up too...but I have a cold right now. So meh. I'm just confused on what Brian Williams meant when he said "northwest Washington State." Yes, WA is in the northwest or was it a town in the northwest part of WA?

very emotional clip, but F*** the media for constantly shoving their cameras in private family moments. if that solider dies they'll stick the camera back in that little boys face to see how he "feels". all for viewers and dollars

Actual news? I have a feeling that your idea of news if Fox News. Oh the irony.

If you come to VideoSift for news, you're an idiot.

MINKsays...

yah. i'll say it again seeing as this clip is somehow so popular.... who called the tv crew? That little piece of context would be really interesting. Was some researcher calling all the returning soldiers he could find asking "can i put a camera in your face?"
Why do people agree to have their private moments staged and filmed like this?

word to roosh4:
"if that solider dies they'll stick the camera back in that little boys face to see how he "feels". all for viewers and dollars "

awwww heck. War FTB.

gigersays...

I agree with Roosh. I live in the Dallas area, and the way that this event was treated was nothing more than a glam-shot. Emotionalism, sensationalism, and general feel-good coverage does nothing to make a valid point..

Why does something like this get so much attention, coverage, and oooh-ahhh? Becuase people are sheep. Slather some tears on that poor sap, and then you have a movement.

Reason, it's useful.

bl968says...

I used this "general feel good coverage" to illustrate the point that there are more costs to this war than the hundreds of billions that have already been spent on it by this administration, the vast bulk to politically connected corporations.

There is the human cost, the lost time that little boy will never get to spend with his daddy, and the lost moments with his son the daddy who has been in Iraq will never get back again.

That's not even counting the losses to the families of those maimed for life, or killed in action, and the losses that brings to the economy.

I was watching a documentary the other night on Cain and Abel. They said the word in the Bible for the verse where Abel's blood was crying out from the ground to God was mistranslated, that it should have been bloods. That what was crying out to God was the voice of Abel and all of his descendants who would now never be. That verse was Genesis 4:10

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood(s)
crieth unto me from the ground.
-- Genesis 4:10

Brings a whole new meaning to the cost of this war doesn't it.

U.S. Deaths Confirmed By The DoD: 3,260
Reported U.S. Deaths Pending DoD Confirmation: 7
Total: 3,267

Iraqi Civilian: 60,835-655,000

Yep reason sure is useful, try it some time.

gizmundisays...

I'm confused. I checked out all the comments before watching this and was expecting to gush. I'm embarrassingly sensitive and tear up even when the Simpsons cue up a minor chord for a dramatic moment. This clip didn't even squeeze a drop of moisture from the bottomless emotional wells I call my eyes. Is it because I don't have children? Is it because I don't understand why the War in Iraq would ever be a reason for a man to leave his child in the first place? Is it because the presence of the camera implies that the scene is contrived? I'm not getting it. Different strokes move different blokes, I guess.

smibbosays...

obviously they chose to share this moment. geez lo-weez ppl... are you anfry because you think its exploitive or because it affected you - broke thru your stony anger about the whole situation?

i fail to understand when ppl complain about something that is touching. youd be happier watching tons of lolcats and pratfall vids? cmon, this is a forum for videos - i'd rather see an actual touching moment than more Fox news BS. i share cute moments of my baby all the time... becausde joy SHOULD be shared.

All the MORE reason to NOT send our men and women in uniform to an idiotic unjustified war that had absofuckinglutely nothing to do with 9/11. The only thing accomplished is that a 'rogue' (whatever that means) dictator put into power and supported by the USA was deposed. To be replaced by yet another corrupt government rife with theft, bribery, wanted criminals, and religious zealots.

Bring ALL of our soldiers home. It is Iraq's responsibility to fix themselves. You cannot force such things on a nation. They need to reach it themselves. If they fail, too bad. They can try again.

Hey, isn't the National Guard suppose to be HERE, protecting our nation in times of emergency? Why the F are they overseas? At this point their name should be changed to International Guard.
