Rumsfeld's known unknowns (commenting on wmd's)

wallace says...

I've always thought this was faint criticism. Laying aside your thoughts on Rummy or his boss, what he's saying is true about life, isn't it? There are things that I know, and things that I'm well aware that I don't know (such as how to fix my ailing fridge), and things that I must be clueless about even existing.

It's like trying to demonstrate that Bush is a mentally retarded villain by showing that he's a poor public speaker. Find real reasons.

Tentative upvote. Very funny stuff - but I think this show got pretty self-indulgent about cracking up onstage.

I've always wondered what Mama actually said (I've seen a bleeped version before). Upvote for answering that question.

Not trying to quibble, but I don't think this should be treated (or tagged) as political, either. Saying, "Look, Mr. Bush, at what your unholy war hath wrought" heartlessly exploits this terribly human moment.

Which, I still say, should have been utterly private.

The most moving video I've ever seen. I'm left wondering if it should exist - I sort of hate the guy who zoomed in on the face of a boy so overwhelmed by joy and shock and relief and love that he can only weep and cling to his daddy.

I'd also object to the label "cute." Cute implies a cloying, sugary, somewhat artificial quality. This is gut-wrenchingly true.

Mary Tyler Moore Theme

This is the theme song from the first season. Subsequent seasons changed the lyric from "you might just make it after all" to the more positive "you're gonna make it after all."

The first one's better.

"it has no narrative."

It indeed has a narrative, just no narrator.

Calling anything - especially anything like this - "not debunkable" is just silly. I'm with Theo (which might send him into despair). A mythically huge building collapsing would result in any number of exposive sounds.

Carlos Mencia Stealing Jokes From Cosby

The guy is indeed mediocre, which equals death. There's no defense.

My point is that there are only a very few comics/authors/screenwriters/whatever that are entirely original. Almost none. All artists borrow - it's just that good ones do it creatively, adding their own twist which in effect makes something new. Mencia is lazy and a poor comic - but Rogan implies that there should be legal consequences. I can only see that happening if you steal a joke word for word. If you can't do a routine without exhaustively researching the history of comedy to make sure some else hasn't done something similar, God help us.

Carlos Mencia Stealing Jokes From Cosby

It's worth noting that such a routine could arise honestly. There's only so much stuff to write jokes about - "Hey, I made up that joke about airline food" only goes so far.

The pattern seems to be that the guy lifts material. But creativity is all borrowing, anyway - rearranging existing matter. This guy just isn't that creative about it. And I suspect that any comedian - if all his stuff were sifted through - could be accused of this kind of thing.

I would love to see a public showdown about this like on another sift with Joe Rogan.

Joe Rogan VS Carlos Mencia

wallace says...

It's worth pointing out that there's only so much stuff to write jokes about. Similar jokes about Britney, Anna Niclole, Bush, etc. will inevitably arise honestly. However, if the pattern is that many of your jokes seem to have been told first by others, there's clearly a problem.

Carlos is silly - but Joe's "nobody likes you" rant is about as childish as it gets.

What a thrilling show to have seen.
