That's because, no offense intended, like everyone else who keeps buying these games you're a sycophantic idiot who happily swallows whatever tiresome, un-original, unimaginative, over-rated swollen appendage the major publishers choose to repetitively cram down your open throat year after year.

i'd honestly really like to see a first person shooter where you play the nazis, or the iraq'is, or the japenese.
or something other than an American indestructo-terminitor-special-forces-Seal-Team-Six-Juggernaught mowing down legions of brown people. frankly i'm a bit tired of playing games that pretend that all the losers in american wars (and often wars of aggression) weren't actual people with actual lives and actual feelings and actual stories to tell. but instead something less.
Yes I know it's a GAME and it's all fantasy rather than a realistic simulation
still, millions of young minds play this drivel and for once, just once, it could be somewhat realistically even-handed ... or even enlightening for something with such mass appeal to offer a different fucking perspective on the supposed world.

and i hate being killed by 7 yr olds online

I'm a bit burned over Mindjack. In his original review he made it sound so terrible that I actually went out and bought it (I like shitty games). Not only was the game pretty innovative and not a complete pile, but he actually made several very factually incorrect statements about it entirely. I kind of started losing faith in the guy being even a sarcastic critic for humor, because he honestly, really didn't seem to play the game at all.

That was my turning point for Yatzee, but he did a couple more reviews later in the year where he made more false statements about certain games (I think Gears 3 was one of them), that just... wtf man. I get that he's negative to the point of hilarity, but when he doesn't even bother to play a game and then tells people outright to not buy it, or in some cases it sounds like he's actually lying about characteristics of a title.... Huh, I'm mad all over again just typing this up, but I had to share with someone. The guy is an irresponsible jerk.

Yeah, playing the Iraqi troops during the first Gulf war would be a blast, mission one: surrender, mission two: surrender again, mission three: get blown up while fleeing Kuwait on the highway of death.

Interesting that Driver made it on the good list... probably doesn't mean the Wii version though. I have to agree with MW3/BF3. I am really over "realistic shooters". Give me more Serious Sam and Portal.

EMPIREsays...

yahtzee is becoming an ever increasing twat. So MW3 and BF3 are THE worst games of 2011?? REALLY? What exactly is so bad about them? That they are sequels? That they make tons of money and are not "original"? They also have great sound design, great graphics (at least BF3), solid single player campaigns (although BF3 still trails behind) and great multiplayer gameplay (even though, contrary to what most people believe, they are two very different types of game. One is twitchy, fast and completely unrealistic, the other focuses more on cooperation, realism, and overall giant maps).

I understand perfectly why he may dislike both MW3 and BF3, but disliking something doesn't automatically make it the worst of something.

By Yathzee's unbelievably moronic standards, both MW3 and BF3 are incomparably worse than Call of Juarez. Which, by the way he somehow forgot out of the list of the worst games. Think about that nugget for a second. Not to mention MANY other shitty games (and shitty by all standards. Bad graphics, bad gameplay, bad sound, buggy, etc).

I must say, I'm getting pretty tired of the hipster "you've probably never heard of the games I play" attitude that is prevalent in PC gaming. The "You like Modern Warfare 3? That's cute, personally I'm more into SpaceChem but whatever" attitude. This is probably unfair on you @therealblankman but this certainly applies to a lot of people.

You know why we have BF3 and MW3? Because BFBC2 and MW2 sold well. Why was that? Because people liked them. Not because major mainstream publishers told us to like them, but because we actually did like them, in general. I don't care for MW3 but I bought Skyrim because I like "dumbed down, overly simplified RPGs" like Oblivion.

I don't think less of people who prefer MW3 to X3. I think less of people who play them on consoles, but that's because console gamers are simply genetically inferior.

Like I said to gwiz when I pm'd him: I don't begrudge these games simply because they're successful. Hell, these game's biggest crimes are that they're simply repetitive, derivative, formulaic and most egregious of all... BORING. If Twilight were a video game, it would be MWx. To quote H.L. Mencken "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people".

Shit, if nobody made money off them then we wouldn't have games to play. My favorite games of the past year are both huge hits, but at least they're fun to play... Batman: Arkham City and Portal 2. Haven't gotten into Skyrim (yet), but that's only because I'm terrified that I'll have to quit my job and not have friends any more if I start playing it- I did play Oblivion so I know of what I speak.

As for consoles vs PCs, you're right of course. At least partially- I frankly got sick of spending $400 every year or so to upgrade my graphics card to be able to even play the latest and greatest, so I've given up and joined the PS3 darkside. But you know what, there's hope for that as well. Valve software is bridging that divide in the right way. I bought Portal 2 for PS3 but using a code I can also play it on my PC, and if I want to play Co-op with someone it doesn't matter whether they're on a PC or PS3 either! Maybe other publishers will do the same going forward, but I doubt it.

direpicklesays...

So much anger! Chillax, people. Just because a guy on the internet shat all over your favorite game doesn't decrease your worth as a person.

My GotY is Dark Souls, I think Battlefield games are awesome fun, and indie PC games Frozen Synapse and Magicka got most of my actual playtime this year.

Jinxsays...

I like FPS games, so naturally I fucking despise MW3 and Battlefield3.

Technically ofc they are fantastic, but they are the videogame equivalent of the Transformers movies. Same tired formula over and over. Its a cynical money grab made by businessmen, and what saddens me is that people allow this shit factory to profit. Like Hollywood.

NetRunnersays...

I like how when Portal 2 came out he eviscerated it with faint praise, but now that the year's over it turns out to be his favorite thing that came out all year.

And it pains me to say this, but he was right on both counts.

2011 fucking blew. GoW 3 was a letdown, so was Uncharted 3, so was AC: Revelations (which didn't reveal jack shit), all of which I'd been very much looking forward to.

I hear that other people really love Skyrim, but given that I almost instantly lost interest in both Oblivion and Fallout 3 when I played them, I'm just gonna save my money and not bother.

And I'm with Yahtzee about MW3/BF3, sorta. I don't really think they deserve to be singled out as garbage, they're just totally and completely not my cup of tea.

Here's hoping 2012 will be a bit less of a letdown!

You know, I constantly hear that being used as an argument against PC gaming, but unless you're obsessive about getting 100+ FPS with every single setting maxed out, it's just not true. I bought the PC I'm using right now in 2007 -- a decent system, not even top of the line at the time, with a high-end video card. For the last five years or so I've been playing the latest and greatest with the settings mostly maxed out, and I've never had any major issues. I probably won't upgrade for another year or so. So I definitely call BS on the old "you have to upgrade every year!" argument.

Draxsays...

Console gaming is a pass time. PC Gaming is more of a hobby. I'm not trying to sound snoby, it just has all the elements. You have to invest time into building systems, tweaking them, keeping up with all the various latest hardware, etc.. And.. most importantly.. spend a f-ton of money to support your hobby.

All of this I love doing, but I can see how a console is the right choice for others. Just give consoles a gorram keyboard and we wont have to keep dumbing down the freaking controls.

Now the flashing arrows, and hints on every splash screen is another story.

I'll second that. As long as you build your PC with a slight thought to the future, you can go years between upgrades without losing out on gaming (especially these days with all of the ports from thousand year old consoles). Even then, if you feel that you must upgrade because you refuse to use anything other than maximum settings (in which case--why are you on a console?), a new $200-$250 video card every couple of years is generally more than sufficient to keep you near the top.

A great list by yahtzee... Granted the last is easily agreed on...

MW3 is basically Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)
which is basically Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
which is basically Call of Duty: World at War (2008)
which is basically Call of Duty: Modern Warefare (2007)
which is basically Call of Duty 3 (2006)
which is basically Call of Duty 2 (2005)

Final Fantasy better watch out! come another seven years (if they don't make any more FFs) you are going to get lapped in the number of sequels!

Note: Madden doesn't count...

I must say i agree with him on BF3. I think i played BF2 about 400-500 hours. BF3 i've done less than 30 and im bored of it already.

Also the DRM, origin service, and web game lobby are all total bobwank.

I've had exactly the opposite experience...I have something like 90ish hours in BF2, but I have thusfar invested 96 hours in BF3...and at this rate I don't see myself getting tired of it for another 100-200. I'm curious as to your falling out with BF3...level design? For me Caspian Border and Grand Bazaar are as good as anything I played in BF2...and now we have the best of BF2 IN BF3.

Is it the change in physics? Can't dolphin dive? Can't spin like a top when prone?

I'm frustrated with the crashes, and they cannot be forgiven for that, but when it works, it provides me some of the most satisfying gameplay. But I'll admit...I know I have fun with it because I'm good at it. KD: 1.19, WL: 1.62, SPM: >380, and I finish in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in over 1/4 of my rounds.

jmzerosays...

I'll agree with another person earlier up: I understand how someone doesn't like Modern Warfare, but it seems silly to say it's a bad game let alone "the worst". To be clear: I don't like Modern Warfare. I got 5 minutes into this recent one before I was too bored to keep going. I've just played too many FPS games in my life, I guess.

But it's still a good game, and it came out in a year with a fantastic number of really bad games, many of which he reviewed.

From my PM to @therealblankman (whom I have nothing against)

See, the thing I take offense to isn't that you don't like it, or them, I have no feelings either way about that. Tastes vary yadda yadda, but the thing that irks me is the essence: "Because you like the thing I don't like, you're a bad person, and I'm much better than you". That just pisses me off.

Close to what @Quboid said.

Dark Souls is an awesome game. It's like Skyrim's evil twin brother. It features a huge beautiful world, with lots of mood and style, with some great enemies and bosses, with customizable stats, armor, magic and weapons and it's hard as balls. Unlike Skyrim, this game is extremely difficult. It purposely fucks with your head, leads you into traps a rewards failure with harsh punishment. The upside is that it feels like you are one tiny adventurer against huge odds in a hostile world, and when you accomplish something it is extremely gratifying. Skyrim is great, but you can easily 'save' and cheat your way through so many of the boss battles. On the rare occasion when you can figure out a way to cheat a boss to death in Dark Souls, it feels completely justified out of self defense against a huge and powerful foe. Anyway, I liked it. Still haven't finished it and I may not because it's so fucking hard and long (go ahead gwiz, it's the perfect set up), but it's an awesome horror-adventure action RPG that rewards caution, smarts, planning and skill - unlike Skryrim, which I liked alot too.

Portal 2 was alright, but it wasn't THAT great. Kind of limited replayability. I played the single player campaign, then I played a couple of runs through with some guy in multiplayer. Haven't opened it up again in months. Kind of disappointing. I was waiting for DLC for it or something, but it's just not got that appeal that keeps your attention like Skyrim or Battlefield 3.

Yawn... If you're not going to try it, then your opinion does not count. Portal 2 was boring once you played it through, and it seemed more gimmicky and felt shorter than the first.

I'm not saying Skyrim sucks, I'm just saying it's not my cup of tea. The odd thing is, it seems like it should be exactly my cup of tea, but there's just something about those games that I just find...boring.

When I played through Portal 2, I felt very mixed emotions about it. It was good, but still a letdown somehow. Yahtzee's review of it totally nailed what was wrong (the story, mostly).

At the time I was like "so it wasn't the most awesome thing ever, there's still the whole rest of the year to go for something better to come along."

Now it's 2012, and I have to grudgingly agree with Yahtzee -- I think the best game of 2011 was Portal 2, and it just wasn't as good as Portal 1.
