Female Australian Politician Gets Meowed At for Assertivness

A meowing Australian senator touched off a political row in Canberra on Wednesday after his cat imitation directed at Finance Minister Penny Wong sparked accusations that the opposition behaved like sexists and goons, and were feral.

Liberal Tasmanian Senator David Bushby meowed at Wong at a hearing when Wong - Australia's first Malaysian-born and first openly gay cabinet member - fought constant interruptions.

A visibly livid Wong snapped, "Oh yes, why don't you meow when a woman does that? ... The blokes are allowed to yell, but if a woman stands her ground, you want to make that kind of comment. It's sort of schoolyard politics, mate."

Bushby initially refused to withdraw but issued an apology - on Twitter - after a barrage of attacks in Parliament during question time and comments by Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan that the opposition was sexist and behaved ferally.

Yea the 'meow' was very inappropriate, and Ms. Wong did the right thing by calling him out.

Because of its importance, politics become a dirty game. And because it is now a very dirty game, there aren't many people left in this side of business. Standards drop, and people stop caring. Nice to know that there are still good people out there fighting the good fight.

Wait? So because Wong can't handle the big girl world of politics we make a fuss about this??? Booho,o he was sexist. And? That's real world when people get off the playground. You fight dirty, you use all the tools to crush the weak---it's probably how Wong got to where she got in politics. Dirty shit...

God forbid she live in Africa (Where women are raped and mutilated every day) or combat (Where their limits are tested) or even women's baseball (Where she could be hit by a ball...)

For shame.

Keep fighting the good fight!

I wanted her to just stand up and start pointing at people and saying, "... you know what? fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, I don't even know who you are but fuck you,..."

^ Oh Yeah, how dare she speak up for herself when we could be mutilating her instead of making a few cat calls..

Don't get me wrong, they are almost all slime, the men and women of politics. That's the difference though, at least men act like the slime they are. She can defend herself all she wants.

Who knows, she may be a good person bent on doing right, but that doesn't change the fact that most women get passes where most men don't.

Why? See the comment above to understand why I said what I said. If you still stand up for someone who sensationalizes in politics, then go for it. Also, if you can tell me that the male lawmaker isn't scum to everyone (Men and women) then that makes him sexist. Otherwise, it just makes him a "politician."

She may be gay, she may dress gay, she may look like a guy even, but that is a damn fine voice. Its like perfect British english with a Chinese accent and a touch of Australian tongue.

Do tell. I am open to actually changing my points of view (I have done so since I was born on things like race, sexual orientation and such) but I must know reason.

In the cut throat world, I simply bring up "don't complain in the big boy/girl ring." If you do, then stay out of the ring.

Is the catcall right, mature, a positive? Of course not. It is fucking childish. But neither is half the shit thrown at Obama, or Bill Clinton or John McCain. Obama was basically accused of trying to teach really underage children sex. That, I would assume, is worse than a catcall.

Again, is it wrong of them to do so? Of course--and yet people are face palming this statement just because I attach the fact that politicans are scum, and expect this behavior, and stop complainig... I want to hear why.

Show me a video of this (or any) politician meowing a male colleague, maybe then I'll reconsider said act as simple politician douchebaggery and not downright sexism.

bareboards2says...

@Lawdeedaw -- I really cheered at her laying into that sexist douchebag.

But you know what? If ANYBODY stood up to a Congressional Committee (or whatever the Aussie equivalent is) just as sharply, intelligently, and on point, I'd be cheering too.

So maybe that is what you might consider -- cheering her on for calling bullshit on the bullshit, whatever the brand of bullshit it is.

The fact that it is sexist bullshit may not matter to you as it does to others -- leave that go, and look at the act itself.

She is great!

That, is, by, far, the most intelligent thing I have heard under these comments. I agree 100%.

U.B.I.D. (Useless Bit of Info of the Day) = Did you know that true feral cats don't normally meow? Cats meow as a way to communicate with humans, not eachother. Sorry..I am full of useless bits of info like that..I will STFU now. =)

Now a sound for a Male politician would be that of a pile of sh!t hitting the floor.
Then putting on a pair of loafers, a bad suit and making it's way to a meeting with an lobbyist who gives them a pile of money just for being a steaming pile of sh!t.
