This week Zero Punctuation reviews Duke Nukem Forever and all its incredible achievements!
furrycloudsays...

I never play Duke Nukem, but did anyone really think Duke Nukem Forever was going to be any good? Especially after watching the "gameplay" footage that came out after the closure of 3D Realms.

Croccydilesays...

For a game company that took that long to develop *one* game, they get what they deserved. Exactly as he said in the video... other and better games came out in the time they sat around twiddling thumbs 90% of the time and my attention was diverted elsewhere.

Hell, I remember Prey being first demoed back in 1997 and at least even that eventually made it to release.

For those who dont get the John Romero reference, or already forgot about that abomination on its own http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daikatana

Now if Valve would hopefully not pull the same thing in regards to Episode Three...

vairetubesays...

they cant recapture what made it so good... mainly the fact that everyone was a young kid and computer games were not-so-common status symbols...unique and not used only as cash cows... you would have to release an experience-revolutionizing console or something to equal that power.

i realise pretty much all people love these things but fucking hell, i'm sick of seeing these zero punctuation reviews. i realise i don't have to watch them but they're annoying me so much that i just had to vocalise my distaste. just seeing the video's title riles me. maybe it's something deep-rooted.

thanks.

Dear God dd... really... I think I can safely say along with many others. 'Who cares?'

Really. There are plenty of things that I don't like that others do, and this isn't even a case whereby you can go 'I'm pissed off that a large, large portion of people are entertained by such utter, utter rubbish (read Brittany Spears or Pussycat Dolls, or Bill O'Reilly), this is a niche thing. Plenty of us enjoy it, if you don't... bloody hell, what's there to get shitty about.

I think you need a long session lying down on a couch talking about some childhood experience with hats or English people, or those living in Brisbane or something... really. Man, I can fully understand the 'man, I've kinda got sick of these now, I'll stop watching them'. But to decide to come on here and go on a little rant?

I think you do have something deep-rooted... and it's not a potato.

KamikazeCricketsays...

Seriously Deputy. If you know that most people will think you are a retarded asshole for doing something and you go ahead and do it anyway, then maybe you ARE a retarded asshole... And potatoes don't have deep roots.

ravermansays...

See if they had released Duke Nukem Forever, you would have been disappointed.

Everyone knows you need the central mythical figure to die and become a martyr to get some real long term worshipping going.

Krupo's right. I still play TF2 on a daily basis, and I have the attention span of a dog when it comes to online FPS games. It's the first game like it to grab me for such a long amount of time.

thyazidesays...

Other games with massive development time.

TF2.

Development was started to bring the sequel to a QUAKE mod into the 21st century over 8 years ago and it still came out.

AeroMechanicalsays...

It was similar with the first Duke3D. It was just on the verge of release when they announced they were scrapping it and totally starting over. They did actually finish that one and it turned out pretty good though.

True, but I don't know if it was one continuous development. I suspect there was a shut down and then reboot around 2005 or so. The game we got, wonderful as it is, isn't anything like the stuff they were demoing back in two thousand naught. That was more like what BF2 was to become.

poolcleanersays...

I played Duke Nukem AND Starcraft Ghost back to back. I'll write my review soon. Compare and contrast and all that.

First review of his that I've watched in quite a while. I've been won over once again.
