Ickstersays...

I can understand some exclamations due to the huge size of the explosions, but just can't handle the fact that this guy sounds like this is some kind of personal entertainment instead of a disaster. It shouldn't take a lot of empathy to realize that *someone* just died when that went up.

Paybacksays...

Until you're a first hand witness to something of that staggering magnitude, I think you should probably hold off on the language critique.

Some people are too susceptible to awe. It takes them over. I'm sure he was merely in the moment and thought of the carnage later.

I agree with @Ickster.

My reaction was disgust not to the language but to the general delight the two of them are emanating.

You can hear the glee in their voices like they're children watching a fucking fireworks show.

It's a fucking huge explosion, folks, and it's very likely killing people right now. How about a little gravitas, or at least a little bit of "OMFG" instead of "Woohoo! ROFLMAO!"

You're grown-ups FFS.

JustSayingsays...

I can understand not thinking of the victims but the lack of, at least, concern is astounding. They act like this is a firework gone wrong. I'd probably wonder why the US is bombing China. And then about the smell coming from my pants. That's supremely terrifying shit and they are about to applaud and cheer.

vilsays...

Adrenalin. Its really exciting when something dangerous is happening close by. Its like youre drunk or a bit high, you say stupid things in a funny voice. What could they have done better? The explosion would not have fit in a horizontal video. The "get out of the way before the holy shit hits us" magnitude of this is easily apparent and they get going fairly expediently.

Asmosays...

Way too easy to sit on the sidelines and making perfectly rational decisions after the fact. Until you've had this sort of shit happen right in front of you, you don't know how you'll react.

eg. Most of the vids, people don't step away from the glass or seek cover, they just stare. They are dreadfully lucky they didn't wear a face full of glass for both secondary explosions. Rational thought goes out the door in these moments.

Nah, I have pretty solid confidence I would never react to a disaster with jubilation. I've witnessed some hairy shit in my life (nothing this massive of course), but I've never reacted by prancing about just absolutely tickled pink with joy.

Speaking of other videos, how many of the other people who caught this on tape sounded like these fucking retards? I've watched many. I've heard none.

MilkmanDansays...

Maybe you're right, but to me that didn't sound like jubilation or delight. It sounded like awe and adrenaline mixed into shock. I even took their decision to "go down" at the end as a hint that they may have been going to try to *help* anyone that was caught closer to the blast(s).

I don't mean this to be a "cool story bro" or "internet tough guy" thing, but: About a year ago there was a house fire (pretty roaring fire, but limited to 1 room) across the street from me. Nobody was home, but I didn't know that at the time. When I saw it, verbally my brain went to mush -- I was just saying "oh shit" about like these guys, over and over. But, the adrenaline and thinking that someone might be stuck in the house whipped me into action. I ended up putting out a good chunk of the fire with hose and buckets before the fire department got there about 15 mins later, and the firemen later said that it may well have spread out of control if I hadn't gotten a partial jump on it.

BUT, in my adrenaline fueled shock, I had forgotten to put on shoes, and had cut up my bare feet a bit by running around on glass that the fire had broken out of a window. Plus, I had rather stupidly been pumping in water via hose and bucket, while standing in a puddle, next to a house that still had mains power going into it...

After the event, my wife specifically said that I had sounded "weird" and not like myself, and hadn't really been particularly coherent in verbalizing what I was planning to do. Anyway, due to the shock and surprise, I'm ready to give these dudes the benefit of the doubt with regards to their weird and potentially "inappropriate" sounding voices and statements.

Hipnoticsays...

This video reminded me of the movie "Cloverfield". All that was missing was the monster stepping through the cloud and roaring.
(Aside from the obvious fact that this is real and the terrible loss of live.)
Life imitating art imitating life?

FlowersInHisHairsays...

I think you're mischaracterizing their reaction if you think they're doing that. Some exclamations of surprise and presumably adrenaline-induced excitement that turn into panic as they realise what's happening, and then they go. Not at all "prancing about".

Maybe I'm off my hinges, but I believe you. [But my Tommy gun don't.]

I'm willing to concede that they may not really be reacting as awfully as it sounds, but that does little to quell my visceral upset at hearing the generally pleased tone their voices seem to give off.

Most (younger) people don't get deep into things, to even think that, especially as it's happening.

Asmosays...

I'm not saying that everyone would react the same way, but it's very difficult to predict how people will react. I don't think their reaction was jubilant, merely that they were distracted away from the possible human cost by the sheer spectacle of what they were witnessing. YMMV. ; )

I'm not going to pass judgement on them. It's not my place. I have no idea of what they might have been doing beforehand... perhaps they were having a group orgy on MDMA and then WHAM! Fireworks, everywhere. Oh good God I'm going to cum!

I'd say if it had been me standing there (sober) - I would have immediately shut my mouth and forgot about my phone and videoing the event. Instead going into survival mode since I would have believed that my life was severely in danger by this event unfolding and would have tried to get out of there as fast as possible- to a basement or somewhere else solid. But, that is only my theory and everyone is different, situations are different, the people you are with, the country you are in, dynamics. It's not like this was their fault. I also get a hint of the sobering magnitude beginning to sink into their voices by the end of the video...

Ah, but we do have the option to go back in time per Lucky and have a serious conversation over this and better script the reaction while this unseen event happens the second time around.

lucky760says...

I just watched it again for the first time and rescind most of my vehement disgust with the folks we hear in the video.

I realize now that my reaction was mainly driven by the multiple fits of laughter the woman gave off in the first 1/3 of the video which while not great, were not as terribly appalling as they were at first blush.

When he's going down the stairs and showing the occasional shot of the explosion, it reminds me of a found footage movie. Maybe Cloverfield.

Yeah, I think her fits of laughter were just nerves - some people react to shock that way.
