ToastyBuffoonsays...How can you NOT love this guy?!! Even on an entertainment level.
Matthusays...@smart people
I didn't know fluoride was the main ingredient in Prozac..... But even if it is, it's such a minute quantity that it cannot have any effect, can it???
I'm super pro tap water, I despise the idea of bottled water. I'm pretty sure my tap here in Montreal has fluoride...
EDIT: Actually... looks like Montreal doesn't have fluoridation, however it's difficult to say for sure because cities seem to flip and flop back and forth on fluoridation and some Burroughs of Montreal do add fluoride. Ah well whatever, maybe the cool-aid's good for us.
Psychologic"Fluoride" is the main ingredient in Prozac? Wow Jesse, I like you for a lot of your political views, but this is like saying table salt is poisonous because it's mostly chlorine.
I'm not saying Prozac or Fluoride are necessarily healthy, but equating the two chemically is hilariously misinformed.
Jinxsays...I dunno about in the US, but in the UK the unofficial "none of the above" box is to tick every box on the paper. I do it when i vote but people often ask me why I bother going to the polls if I am just going to mess the paper...but they almost all wish there was a real 3rd/4th/etc option. Funny that.
Sagemind*Quality information here - He holds the correct point of view - but no one has enough courage to stand up with him.

GeeSussFreeKHuh, a lot less yelling and a lot more good conversation than I was expecting from these 2...well done?!
Edit: Wait, you can't fly if you are in a lawsuit with the federal government, how does that work?
GeeSussFreeK@Matthu
I am not a chemist. However, I think I have an approximation for you on fluoride. Prozac is composed of Fluoxetine. It's chemical formula is C17H18F3NO. The approximate mass of the fluoride is about 8% of the compound. If you take the recommended daily dose, it puts you at about 1.6mgs of fluoride a day. The Daily Max for ANY weight of human is 10mgs. The average daily consumption from water is around 1mgs as well. This is about 2mgs a day from just these 2 sources. This is a hazardous level for infants and small children. In addition to tap water and medicine, food is usually processed with tap water and therefore has trace levels of fluoride. In addition, so do some sodas, juices, teas, wines, ect. Also, some salts, and interestingly enough, cigarettes ( anaesthetic methoxyflurane, isoflurane). So once again, it isn't a once source problem. Water, specifically tap water, is used in nearly every facet of food production. It's the snowball problem. This wouldn't be a problem if we just opted for personalized tap fluoride dispensers, or some other local, "toggalable" option. And really, why ingest something that is supposed to be topical? Should I start eating deodorant next?
Chaucersays...he's actually suing the government about the tsa scans and probes. That's why he cant/wont fly.
dagComment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)
Jessie "The Body" Ventura is a national treasure and a bad-ass.
deathcow> If you take the recommended daily dose, it puts you at about 1.6mgs of fluoride a day.
Fluorine bound into Fluoxetine is a lot different than fluorine bound into fluoride. You can eat all the salt you want but eating elemental chlorine and elemental sodium would kill you and light you on fire. Groaningly bad that he would equate drinking fluoride to being the same as eating Fluoxetine.

Yea, people seem to think of chemistry like cooking, where a molecule is just a loose collection of ingredients.
When people talk about the health risks of "fluoride" they're usually talking about Sodium Fluoride, which is an ionic compound and splits into Na+ and F- when dissolved in water (the negatively charged fluorine ion is called "fluoride").
Excessive amounts of fluoride (well above what is generally in tap water) can lead to severe health problems. Perhaps lower amounts cause problems too, but the evidence is less clear.
Prozac contains three covalently bonded fluorine atoms which do not split off when being metabolized. Prozac has it's own health impacts, but not because it produces fluoride ions.
entr0pyThis is the most outrageous scandal since the Dihydrogen Monoxide conspiracy.
GeeSussFreeKI love it when you talk about bonding, fap fap fap.

Sorry for leaving you in an excited state... I understand it raises the potential for sudden discharge. ;-)

xxovercastxxIt's really a shame when he goes off on these tangents about prozac and such, because it makes you wonder if he's just as crazy when he talks about things that seem to make sense.
dannym3141Yeah, if it weren't for the slightly crazy things, he'd be as ass kicking as ron paul.
marinarathat the nazis used fluoride is commonly heard, but completely undocumented. Anyhow i'm not a chemist so won't comment further
marinarafound a paper published in a neurological journal about fluoride. I can't read the damn thing though.
http://www.mims.com/Page.aspx?menuid=pubmeddetail&pmid=medline10n0113%5C4339152.xml&h=sodium+fluoride
titled
"Effect of sodium fluoride on the uptake of serotonin by human thrombocytes and on the aggregation of human thrombocytes.
"
marinarahttp://bit.ly/gNSnlb
says fluoride can act as an neurotransmitter in general, triggering neurotransmitter receptors, apparently all kinds of them.
therefore, SSRI's like prozac which increase serotonin, and fluoride, which stands in for serotonin. The two would naturally operate in a similar way, which isn't what Jesse says, so what.
**edit
again fluoride = more seratonin

found this:"Later Sternweis & Gilman (1982) reported that fluoride activation of adenylate cyclase depends on the presence of aluminium traces. "

bareboards2I was tempted not to upvote because of that stupid 9/11 clip. So irresponsible and stupid.
I have had the same idea about term limits though. Mine is slightly different -- double the length of all current terms, with no possibility of re-election. It is a complicated job, it takes time to learn it. But since you would spend zero time on fundraising, you would have more time to actually govern. And since you can't get reelected, you can't get "bought".
And also, you don't have to worry about polls. You can vote your conscience, instead of pandering to the least common denominator of your district.
And you can always recall if there is egregious bad behavior.
