The Rumble 2012 - Jon Stewart vs. Bill O'Reilly

HuffingtonPo description: Bill O'Reilly and Jon Stewart faced off in a spirited debate on Saturday night.

Though the "Rumble In The Air-Conditioned Auditorium" was far from the first time the two men have duked it out, the debate lasted much longer than any of their previous on-air skirmishes, and was held at a university in Washington, DC, not on television.

stewart just takes billo apart.
when you take away billo's control and his bully pulpit he has nothing and stewart reveals billo for the tool he is.
the man has nothing when he cannot dominate the conversation.

Four times I started this video, intent on watching the entire thing. But after a total of 17 minutes, I gave up. Between O'Reilly's cards and Stewart's antics, it makes me want to rip my hair out.

I'm only five minutes in and it's so obvious to me that BillO is not a conservative. or if he is, he's conservative light/moderate.

you don't go into a comedic/light hearted, fun event like this if you're a die hard true-believer.

This is a political WWF, it's staged entertainment. I'd say the only difference between this and the news is that John/Bill don't hide it.

I actually agreed with BillO on a few issues. I think raising the social security age and cutting rich people off from social security benefits is a reasonable idea. I also agree that people are being hired to spread hate... mainly by the FOX news network. He also admits Iraq was a bad idea/disaster.

Bill doesn't seem that extreme when compared to the Glenn Becks and Alex Jones of the world.

Raising the age is fine if it is means tested.

Poorer people don't live as long. Poorer people tend to work at jobs that are much harder on their bodies. Adding years to when they are eligible to collect social security isn't right.

Can you imagine being a janitor at age 68? Dang.

Also --

Maybe I don't understand, but Jon said -- let's means test social security. Bill-o said no, then proceeded to say means testing for the rich. Am I missing something?

I also agree that capitalism is the problem with our discourse. It's not just the selling of hate, it is also the selling of fear and sex and cute kitten videos. When a news room has to make a profit, they are offering stories that pander to the lowest common denominator. Reagan's Iran contra mess, while well covered, was nothing compared to the coverage of Clinton and the stained dress and the cigar. Because sex sells.

^I've not thought about it or studied it in great detail, so perhaps I should keep my trap shut until I do.

Please do not.

One of the ways that we can grow is the exchange of ideas. As I re-read your original comment, it come off to me as if you are purely mentioning your opinion. This is even more strongly backed up by your response of, essentially, "Oh, I hadn't thought of it that way."

Honestly, I think Bill is just playing a role like Colbert. So is Glen Beck, they're just paid to advance a narrative.

Bill? Maybe.

Beck? I dunno, I honestly believe there is a touch of the foaming-at-the-mouth lunatic that believes his own bullshit about him. Or maybe he's just a much better actor than I give him credit for.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Fox News was actually a cunning liberal ploy to illustrate the insanity of the right that backfired horribly?

Ok yeah took me a while to finish that one as well. Bill O flip flops on his ideas all of the time.I mean Bill O was one of the main people fighting on the airwaves to go to war in Iraq... how soon people forget. Now he thinks it was a bad idea..

He has the audacity to say capitalism is the problem with discourse saying it creates fakes and he was the one saying that we should not pay for NPR, why? Because NPR does not tout the same temporary quote issues unquote as the FOX agenda? It really seems to me that Bill O doesnt have any sort of real opinions that have not been bought and paid for, which is another reference he kept making.

Urgh, the sort of brain dead, weird point picking that some people do.

BillO and his picking on public tv is just asinine. How this became a talking point is just infuriating. It matters FUCK ALL in any budget anywhere, and yet the right have decided it's a good thing to make be a talking point so the actual important points are ignored.

The politicians do this all the time here in Australia too, and it's infuriating. All the moreso because people take the bait and end up making the crap they've decided should be the talking points be the most important thing to discuss. No matte how COMPLETELY unimportant it is in the large picture.

URGH

Waiting for the day when tv-hosts replace the vice-presidents...

It all seems to drivel down to picking your life-style camp, complete with station, label, blog, and bumper sticker.
