So sad. It just disgusts me that there are people who do this to animals out there. Especially in the town where I live too. I'm not letting my kitties out of the house, that's for sure!

It all needs to be put into perspective, which lives do we as a society value more?
I dont hear any PETA ads for fleas and rats. They are regularly killed indiscriminately. Why is that the case? Because we value human life more than the lives of other things. The same could be said for things like cats and dogs, animals that a majority of people keep as pets over chickens. Why do we indiscriminately end the lives of chickens? Probably because we as a species enjoy consuming them as a cheap source of protein.

All that being said, I dont want the chickens to suffer, but that's not going to stop me from eating them. Just like I dont particularly want the ants in my kitchen to suffer, but that's not going to stop me from hosing them down with Raid.

The person who did this should be prosecuted for cruelty to animals. I saw the chick thread too, and have no problem with animals being killed quickly and humanely for the purpose of feeding people. Horrifically wounding an animal just for giggles though is an entirely different issue and needs to be stopped.

I'd a feeling whoever shot the cat was trying to kill it. Lucky cat for the arrow to glance the skull and just go through skin and muscle.

Almost similar to the poor Joe who gets a javelin through his neck or eye socket without dieing.

I don't understand why some people hate cats so much they would think about hurting them. How can you hate fuzzy, cuddly little balls of joy? They are nothing but pure awesome.

How do we even know it was intentional? It's completely possible someone missed their intended target and just happened to hit this unfortunately located kitty.

How can we be sure the cat isn't at fault here? There's not enough evidence to show what happened before the cat was impaled. Maybe it was self-defense. Just some grandma sitting at home watching Maury when this crazed feline comes in, hopped up on catnip, and goes right for her jugular. If she didn't have her crossbow with her...well, would you have been happier with "Sweet Old Grandmother of 12 Mauled by Vicious Cat"? Let's not jump to conclusions.


(But yes, someone is imbalanced and hopefully they're apprehended before moving on to more serious crimes.)

The owners are letting the cat run around the neighborhood, which is irresponsible. I've had neighborhood cats destroy my gardens with their feces and urine. I sympathize with someone who decides to protect their property by taking out local predators.

I'll bet that cat won't be going back to the yard where it was shot, though. So a near-miss is as good as a kill in this case.

It makes me laugh that there are some in this world that are so intimidated by a cat, they would bring harm to it. Forget having a little dick, you're actually afraid of a ball of fur. Now THAT'S pathetic.

Whew, for a second there I thought the sift was acquiescing to the existence of a deity. Disaster averted!

I live in a small town in the middle of rural Western Washington state. We have a large deer population that roves through town with impunity.

Last year, someone hit a buck with an arrow -- same as here, didn't kill it, deer wandered town until it was humanely dispatched.

What I found interesting is how angry the hunting community became. They were instrumental in discovering who had done it. I thought that was cool.

There was also a huge outcry, money was collected for a reward leading to arrest. What wasn't cool is that a young woman had been raped the next small town over -- very shocking in our small town, which is still pretty safe as communities go.

The deer got more coverage in the local (once a week) paper. Folks didn't step forward offering cash for a reward to capture the rapist.

I know it is all human nature, but still. Sometimes I get depressed by us.
