Alien Swarm : New, kick ass free game from Valve

Alien Swarm. All over this. This game is now diamonds. Valve is on a horse.

Update: The game is now available at http://store.steampowered.com/app/630/

Back when this was FIRST released as an Unreal Tournament mod, I was on a team who eventually (after weeks and weeks of training) completed the entire campaign perfectly with no loss of life on the hardest difficulty in one sitting. We were the first ones to accomplish such a task. To my knowledge, no one else even tried. It was a work of art. One of the best gaming experiences of my life.

That's cool, I missed the news when Valve bought out the company that made Alien Swarm (Black Cat Games). I don't know why Valve is releasing this game for free, but that was nice of them. Apparently they're also releasing the source code and development tools.

Dear Valve,

I mean this in the nicest regards... Stop messing around and get back to work on Episode 3 for Christ sake! You're like a 3rd Grader with homework! March back up to your office and lets complete this bad boy.

Sincerely,
Patient and waiting Unsung_Hero

They can probably release it for free because of Steam. It'd be interesting to know how much money Valve makes from Steam - the more people that have Steam on their computers the more likely they are to buy some of those impulse bargain games that are $5-15 a pop off Steam. Or better yet for Valve, the more people that own Steam the more likely they are to purchase a full digital release. This is good marketing and a good business plan. I am definitely not opposed.

I almost never go on Steam because of the ads... on Monday I will wade through the ads to DL this.

You know you can turn off the ads by going into To the Steam Menu>Settings>Interface Tab.

Switch "favorite window" to Library or Community (rather than store). And uncheck "notify me" (of things I should buy)

pho3n1xsays...

if it weren't for the ads i'd have never known about their recent 'summer inside' bargain days sales...

beathazard for $2.something? done.
osmos for $2.something? done.
i'd have grabbed a lot more except i already had a bunch of them.

i love indy games... i'll also be grabbing this the second i see it.

evan if this game is good ,

steem is still flawed

Im the typ of person that would buy all my games on steam , I have maby 20 steam games as it is , mostly valve games but maby 5 non valve games. The big problem with steam are the prices for this reasoin i have bought my last 4 games from amazon , play.com game and game station. There is something realy wrong if you can pick up a game cheeper from bricks and morter . (steam prices r only good for old games or valve games when they promote them)

Another seperate issue i have with steem and valve is that the games seem to be more and more like console games , in game play and design , I have nothing against console games but i have a 360 to play console games on , with my pc i prefer games that are more saphisticated.

In some ways steem is gr8 id much rather have a company like valve do Digital distrabutoin than say EA or some random allso there promoting and pushing indi games is nice. I just think with some small changes it could be super amazing rather than just another way to get games.

The price of AAA games on steam that are not vlave are a total joke , i dont see how you can defend it.

last game i bought bad company 2 , steam price £29.99 amazon with free 3 day delivery £15 , play.com allso had it for free 3 day delivery for £15 , games satay at full retail price for longer on steam , and u dont have the advantage of trading it in if you stop playing the game + as you say no manual.

If you preorder on amazon its poasted out so it arives on relase day , and often arives day before.

It only anoys me because i would rather use steam , i allso know its largely due to publishers forcing that price on steam. another thing thats shit is that you buy a game on steam thinking steam will auto update it and all the bullshit coppy protection will be handled by steam but often thats not the case and u still have to manual patch or sign up to exsternal websites and make acvcounts for games. the New IL2 game was a compleat farce and arma 2 took a good 4 months before you could patch it with steam.

I think Valve are now in a positoin to say to publishers , "u need to have it at x price or we wont host it " and allso force them to acomidate the steam network if they want there game on it.

I have used steam since first beta came out and its gr8 for all the valve and hl stuff , patching HL1 to play dod and cs1.4 was a total ball pain and steam fixed that (lol patch 501015-50102 then patch 50192-2304).

Steam is not really flawed. Just because you might be able to get a slightly better price on Amazon does not take into account the full situation. With Amazon, you have to pay for the shipping. Not to mention waiting. It isn't so bad if you have an Amazon Prime account, but then you are paying more anyway so it doesn't matter. Plus, you can pre-load most games on Steam when they are first released, meaning the day before you can have it installed and ready to go, then the next morning just start up Steam and have at it.
Plus, with game stores like Gamestop and such, you have to drive their, find the game, check out, and drive back, probably for the same price as it was on Steam.

The only thing I don't like about the Steam digital distribution is lack of manuals are other box content that comes with retail store purchases.
As for games becoming more "consolized", that is the developer's fault, not Steam's. Besides, there are plenty of sophisticated PC games on Steam, you just have to weed out the bad ones.
In fact, the deals Steam hosts almost 24/7/365 are incredible. They gave out Portal for free, this for free. 600 games under $10. 180 under $5. I mean, the THQ pack alone is about 5 years worth of games for like $20.

Edit: Unfortunately the THQ pack is no longer on sale, it is back to $99. That was a steal while it was cheap, though.

you mean the one ad that displays when you first turn on steam that cycles through the latest releases you can buy? Oh, yeah, I always break a sweat pressing the 'close' button too.

I know, right?

Get this.. you can also turn off the ads all together with about 3 mouse clicks... if you can survive it!

pho3n1xsays...

some games do have digital manuals. right click the game and it may be there. otherwise really, do you need it? most people customize their control setup (or at least go to look at it in-game) before they even start playing anyway, so unless you want cheesy backstory or 6 pages of ads for upcoming games, the manual is pretty useless most of the time anyway.

the BIGGEST draw for me about steam is that if you have to reload your game at any point, for any reason, all you need to do is remember your steam login. the game is re-downloadable and the key is stored in the steam cloud, so you don't have to worry about those pesky coasters or the cases they came in to find your auth key.

to me, that alone is worth the (sometimes) 2-3 day wait after release to begin playing (if the provider is un-prepared), and the standard retail price for a possibly extended time period. besides, if it's a good game, i don't mind paying full retail price.

being unable to trade the game is sometimes crap, but generally you run into auth key issues buying used games anyway so most people don't. anyway you never know when you'll get the urge to play an old game just for the sake of playing it again, and with steam you can re-load and do that at a moments notice.

Only beef I have with Steam is that you can't 'resell' old games. I bought Bioshock, played it, realized it stunk, and wanted to sell it but I couldn't because all I had was the Steam download. Bleh. Now I will forever have that stupid reminder of my purchase on my 'games I can download' list (along with CounterStrike, DoD, and all the other games that are dead to me on Steam). Small price to pay though. All in all Steam does what it is supposed to do. No more and no less. It is no more onerous than Windows Live on the 360 or other GUI menu systems you have to slog through.

I personally love steam and I've been using it since it was released and it has only gotten bigger and better. Every one of my friends, new and old, RL and online, are on steam the few that joined recently love the crap out of it.

And yes sometimes the games are $5-10 more than they could be found elsewhere but you also have to pay shipping for those, so it balances out. Considering as well the fantastic Sales that Steam puts on, if you are patient you can get a real steal!

I've got 72 games on Steam. Many of which I bought on sale or as a package. I bought 8 games during the summer sale (6 of which were $5, one was $2 and the last $10!). I prefer it now adays and cant stand having to buy a game at a store or online when I can just steam it and have it in hours.

Croccydilesays...

I only buy games on Steam that are on sale. If I buy something new it is the good old fashioned way. Steam will probably be a better outlet for older games but I do not have good faith in new games on it yet. The prices are rarely compeditive for new games compared to just walking to a store and buying the damn thing and I get a physical copy of the game. I realize the whole point of Steam is to install games anywhere which is nice, but you still have to wait a few hours (or more) when downloading a 5-10GB game!

The sales are indeed nice, but I sometimes dislike the OMG 1 DAY SALE TOO LATE IF YOU MISSED IT LOL!!!1 I missed out on the EA racer package in July since I was on vacation

Now if only they gave the amount of attention they have been giving $20 Team Fortress 2 (ALOT) to stuff like $50 Left 4 Dead... Oh yeah and where is HL2 Ep. 3 This kind of lop-sided support is a bit odd but I cannot complain as they are still better than most game companies

The only real complaint I can see about Steam (and why I don't buy anything new as such a small investment into it) is that if you lose your account or it gets deactivated for whatever reason you lose ALL your games and there is NO recourse thanks to the EULA. Maybe Valve will be nice when Steam eventually falls under and allow you to unlock what you have... but what if someone buys out Valve

mentalitysays...

^I never buy physical games anymore. It's not like the old days when boxes came with gorgeous manuals and tons of extras. Now it's just a box wasting resources and taking up space, and something I have to worry about moving/losing.

Steam is just much more convenient. It's also easier to find games on sale on Steam than to go check your local retailer every day. Finally, considering Steam is the largest digital distribution service with millions of users, I don't see it going under any time soon.

Abel_Priscsays...

Man, this game is actually a lot of fun! My friends and I spent the better part of this morning going through the campaign. Can't really complain about how short it is, and being able to customize your class is a nice touch. Thank you, Valve!
