deathcowsays...UPDATE: EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE
Barsepssays...I thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it...thought they'd missed it.......................... but nope, there (at 11:10) was "Sledgehammer"

Thanks for the trip down memory lane
siftbotsays...Boosting this quality contribution up in the Hot Listing - declared quality by Barseps.
Double-Promoting this video and sending it back into the queue for one more try; last queued Saturday, May 18th, 2013 8:14pm PDT - doublepromote requested by Barseps.
ulysses1904says...I'll nitpick here. Since this video seems focused on American crap culture it should not have included "Breakout" by Swingout Sister. Although it was released in England in1986 they didn't play it to death here until the fall of 1987.
Deanosays...You telling me music wasn't a helluva lot better back then? Apart from Huey Lewis of course. God I remember most of this though I wasn't into videogames much.
cosmovitellisays...Wow I think think this was the most formative year of my life..
chingalerasays...Uhhhh, Party All The Time-Eddie Murphy? "How bad could music be" should have been the motto that year....For all the fans here of some of the cheesiest music ever released, 86' was one of the weakest and whitest for pop music-The UK dished-out some real cheese that year as well-
I recall spinning only ONE pop LP that year over and over, Better to Travel-Swing Out Sister, the only new talent worth the mustard, engineered and recorded wonderfully, with a sound that stood out as original without rehash.....The mid eighties were a goat turd for good music.
I mean come ON!? Graceland?? Lionel Ritchie?! Mr. Mister??!
I remember losing all faith in rock and or roll that year and listening to mostly trad jazz and heavy metal for the next 4 years. Pop music hit an all-time low in 1986.
antsays...*videogames *science *animation ... Well, basically all tags!
Was that Braveheart movie clip? If so, then that wasn't in 1986!
siftbotsays...Adding video to channels (Animation, Science, Videogames) - requested by ant.
mxxconsays...A lot of it you can see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986
chingalerasays......wait a minute, DC?? I thought you said you liked the mid-eighties pop?
SDGundamXsays...Pretty sure it was Highlander (the movie version). Though personally I loved the TV version if only for the rockin' Queen opening theme song:
I am immortal. I have inside me blood of kings. I have no rival, no man can be my equal...
EDIT: Turns out it was in the movie version too, though somehow I don't remember it.

quietlyhardcoresays...Get's my vote for the "An American Tale" ending.
ChaosEnginesays...Given that they had Europe (the band), Maradonas "hand of god" and even a bit of NZ kiwiana ("Slice of Heaven" at 4:55), I don't really think it's fair to say it's focued entirely on American crap culture.

ChaosEnginesays...If you ask almost any metal fan (and even most open minded music fans), they will acknowledge that Master Of Puppets is a classic album of it's genre that still sounds as good today as it did when it came out.
Just wondering if anyone here feels that there are any other albums/songs of that era (preferably featured in the video) that still hold up in the same way, because I'm struggling to think of any.
And not ironic kitsch either... actual good music that if it was released today would still be regarded as good.
Maybe "graceland" or "Licenced to Ill"?
Also Charles Dance: being evil since ages ago!
shinyblurrysays...sigh
budzossays...I randomly thought of INXS - Kick the other day. All the music on that album has aged really well if you ask me. "Mystify" or "Meditate" could pass for current music, along with other tracks.

jmdsays...I love it... people mocking it for american crap culture. Pop quiz, you are 9 years old, it is 1986, can you name ONE SONG that you know was actually produced outside of the US? Being a kid in that era, you knew nothing of what happened outside out boarders.. there was no internet and the only foreign videos block buster had was horrible dubs released in the US.
And I had all these tapes, i can believe this many awesome songs were all from 1986 though. Pretty amazing year.
PostalBlowfishsays...I can't believe all this happened in 1986. I was 10, and this feels like my entire childhood. Makes me want to see videos for other years of the 80s.
PostalBlowfishsays...Also @ 9:23

Paybacksays...Oh, and Berlin - Take My Breath Away (10:58)
I include because I had SUCH a crush on Terri Nunn, although "No More Words" was better, it doesn't fall within 1986.
dagsays...Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)
A very good year for music.
deathcowsays...This is like comfort food. Like fried chicken... it clogs your arteries and kills you but takes you back to grandma cooking dinner in Georgia in the 1970s. This stuff was what was playing when I got my first car, was mobile for the first time, out of school for the first time, freedom. So I associate a powerful good with all this stuff. Tripe.... yes.... but good times around it. In my own car, would have been YES, Pink Floyd and Rush around this time.
...wait a minute, DC?? I thought you said you liked the mid-eighties pop?
skinnydaddy1says...God, I was 14. I remember far to much of that year than I want to......
It was also the beginning of the end of my thumbs. The NES D-pad destroyed them..
nanrodsays...As with any year musically a lot of crap and some gold. Fortunately each of us gets to decide which is which for ourselves. Personally I have been and always shall be a fan of the Moody Blues. I have fond memories of Saturday nights in 1973 running a floor polisher across the cafeteria at Sears while singing "Question" at the top of my lungs. Yes ... I am that old.
lucky760says...Finally was able to squeeze in 12 minutes to watch this...
Wow, I'd forgotten about so many of those video games and tv shows and songs... My mind is flooded with childhood memories...
It's wonderful having so many vivid memories and momentarily reliving in my mind what it felt like to be a child experiencing all those things first-hand.
It just makes me wonder how my boys are going to feel about the forthcoming formative years of their lives. Not only do I want to ensure they experience all the great things (and as few of the bad things) as possible that pop culture has to offer, but I just want them for the rest of their lives to be able to remember back to their childhood with fondness.
