Time for a new Sifter?

The layout for VideoSift 4.0 is progressing nicely, in the hands of a noted UI designer/Sifter.

One of the things we're considering is our current VideoSift Sifter logo. Should we keep it just like it is?

It was designed by Ren a long time ago in an earlier, simpler Sift era- but has drawbacks now in that it doesn't blend well with custom CSS background colors in channels.

There's also the issue that some people don't even recognise what it is. I put this down to a general unfamiliarity with kitchen utensils for most people - but maybe we could come up with another design that better evokes what a "sifter" is. All ideas and scribbles welcomed.

"VideoSift" is out there and I wouldn't change the logo too much. I think SiftBot isn't recognized as a "sifter" because it doesn't have the crank handle. If you type "flour sifter" into google image search you'll get an idea of what I think most people expect a sifter to look like. Sort of a gun grip with a trigger pull type assembly.

I think any VS logo change should enhance the message of filtering out the massive amount of shit out there and bringing the best videos to VS users/viewers, but I'm not really sure if that's what this site is about anymore. Maybe a name change is more appropriate. This is more community sift than video sift.

On that note, I love and miss you all ..

I like the logo as is, even though it's hard to tell what it is. It does look absolutely hideous with my channel, although that's probably my fault, so that should probably be fixed.

What I want to know is the font for the "VideoSift" next to the logo. It seems really familiar, but I can't figure out what it is.

Bring back the VideoGrater!

No but really, I agree that many people would probably be unfamiliar with a sifter. Don't think there's anything really wrong with getting rid of the literal interpretation of it in the logo, and replacing it with something merely metaphoric but perhaps simpler, more iconic and easier to remember.

I mean, just taking a look at the logos for the approved video hosts, that's the kind of the direction that other video hosting sites took.

you should animate the sifter, like the microsoft paperclip. make him really fucking annoying. plus he could pop up whenever you start typing to offer assistance.

"are you sure you want to sift another cat video?"

"looks to me like you deliberately ignored the possible dupes. you sure you want to carry on?"

"your comment makes no sense. is that you choggie?"

etc etc. it'll be a hoot.

I think the font is Verdana, made very bold with CSS - though Lucky could say for sure.

Here's the CSS:

a.siteid {
   float:left;
   color:#4FB3E3;
   font-weight:bold;
   margin-left:10px;
   font-size:2.5em;
   font-family:Tahoma,sans-serif;
}

Looks like big, fat Tahoma.

Thanks. I care way more about fonts than I should.

This sift (sieve) is even more unrecognizable! Let's just go with the videoGrater idea! or videoSpork. VideoWaffleIron, clogging all your holes with gooey goodness!
How about this...
On facebook, there is a greasemonkey app called facebook colorizer that pulls a color template from the profile picture and applies it to the rest of the page. I don't know if the code is open-source, but how hard would something like that be? If you want to change the color of your VS, the text colors and all things "default" change with it! (of course saving customized comment boxes and the like)

I think what people don't realize is that it's not the type of sifter we are using, it's the Sift itself.
Regular households don't have them any more - When I was a kid and my Grandma used to teach us to bake, everything got sifted in BUT today, we don't need the sifter in everyday baking. The object is old, antiquated.

The word SIFT is not however. We, maybe, should consider loosing the Sifter Image in favor of a logo that leans more toward video or cinema. I think the sifter (image) is stumbling block we may NEVER get past. So lets embrace it as a word and start illustrating the word video in stead!
