RFC: VS6 Sidebar Suggestions

Request for comment on the new VS6 sidebar on the video permalink page. It currently shows to sections with a maximum of 5 videos per section: 1) Suggested Videos; 2) Related Videos. It's been suggested (or complained about) that the new sidebar sucks.

Some questions for you: Do you think it sucks? If so, why? Being as specific as possible, what sections should be included there?

Please don't just say you want all the old sidebars back; that's not helpful. There are too many of those and they're too messy. Instead suggest what content you want and why it must be there in the sidebar instead of requesting that it be added somewhere more out of the way.

Also, if the Suggested Videos and Related Videos content does suck in your opinion, please suggest what videos (5 maximum per section) should be selected for display there. Suggested Videos selects the top voted new videos from the current video's channels. Related Videos is the same as the old related videos section, selecting videos that are *related first and then any videos that have similar title/tags/description secondly.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

The way it's designed seems like it's intended for use on cell phones and tablets, and not really a computer.

The entire page is streamlined in a single column where you have the video information / comments / permalinks all in the same area with no differentiation.

The way you have it now where everything is noticeably different based on colours has completely fallen by the wayside, and everything is just kinda lumped in together on the same crummy grey(dark mode) background.

The permalinks section needs to be off to the side more, and maybe put in with a different colour? Otherwise it just seems like you've slapped everything on a page. May not hurt to put them as smaller and off to the side aswell.

So quick thoughts and obviously just my personal opinions.

<redacted my main point>
Due to font style/size change i hadn't noticed or was just recently done. Much nicer ty

Suggested videos i dont ever see myself using (just to random) although i have no clue if it would be used by non members(benefiting the sift in other ways) or other users.

Related videos are often not related well enough to be reasonably usable. I dont use them as I either click a tag that does a related search or hit up the search bar which works much better.

I don't think anything 'MUST be' in the side bar, but would rather have something useful then not. What i think would benefit the sift and sifters instead ill have to think about.

Also am i right in assuming these side bars are just for pages with individual videos on them? Not all pages? As of now different pages have different sidebars (front,unsifted,sifttalk,etc.). I assume all the other side bars would stay the same as they are currently?

I don't understand how both of those sections work.
What are "Related Videos" based on? Is it based on *related tag? If so, I see videos there when related tag is not used.

Similarly with "Suggested Videos", I don't understand what algorithm is it based on? Why is it suggesting me those videos?

oritteropo says...

I mostly use related for finding dupes, and only occasionally for finding vids to watch. The suggested vids algorithm sounds too much like what I'd normally click to the front page for.

I do have some suggestions though, some of which used to be a thing and one I'd like to see:

  • The 5 newest submissions
  • 5 other vids from this user
  • 5 vids expiring soon
  • 5 vids from beggar's canyon

Actually, I do quite often look at Top New Videos by Vote, even though I could just click through to the front page. I'm not adding it to my list though, because only taking 5 wouldn't be the same, or as good.

p.s. I also have an argument against removing related from the vs6 sidebar: It does have a place, but finding somewhere else for it in the new layout is a challenge.

When i am on just videosift.com, i see the top 15 videos which i really like and have always used.

When i click on one of those top 15 videos, it takes me to ../video/a-video. The top 15 videos are no longer visible, which i find a little disorientating. That top 15 side bar everywhere except profiles kind of gave a common theme regardless of the page - which i liked.. it was an anchor.

I have never clicked one of the suggested videos, because i want to watch the top 15 in a certain order often and the "suggested videos" bit doesn't state where they exist on the top 15.

The "related videos" part seems like it's missing something, they might be related but not in a way you'd expect. For example the very first one i checked - "sportscaster responds to racism" - has as a related video "what what (in the butt)" which is possibly offensive

Also as shepppard said, it looks very very mobile friendly. I don't like the way the videos in "suggested" and "related" appear at all on a pc screen.. they are just floating in nothing, there's no delineations.

just an idea here @lucky760,which i suspect many long time users may not even consider, because it is old news to them, but is there a way to expose top videos from years ago?

i am not suggesting re-hashing a related/suggested tag but actually making a spot for top voted sifts, which from years ago could hit 300+ votes.

follow my logic here:
IF the purpose of all this time and energy you are putting in to revamp the sift to a more sleek and user-friendly (which means phones and tablets,to the chagrin of us neanderthal PC users) in order to attract new users, doesn't it make sense to reveal the wonderful content that started this site?

the sift has become more than just a voter-based community, categorizing quality videos.
it has become an archive.
so many sifters from years ago submitted some amazing content just when videos were becoming popular.the birth of the youtube generation and we were there, and youtube was not the juggernaut it is now.

you had to really put some time into finding decent videos, using multiple sites.the results from all that time and energy were spectacular though and i think new users would be just as enthralled as we were back then.

so instead of cluttering up the front page with list after list,maybe..possibly..we could add the lists as a single link.

so if someone already familiar with the sift could click the top 15 link and be directed there.
this would satisfy sifters like @dannym3141 and i suspect a majority of others.

you could do the same with related/suggested and more videos from=sifter name here.

this would work on two levels:
1.new users would be exposed to some of the most amazing content that they had never been exposed to before.
2.many of those older videos are now defunct, giving current sifters an opportunity to undead that video, therefore retaining the integrity of the video archive and upholding our *quality status.

all-time sifts
legendary sifts
tales from the archive crypt

just some ideas what to title the link.

what say you?

eric3579 says...

I'm pretty much a whore for the the top 15/30 list. Constantly referencing it for one reason or another. Also it changes often enough and happens to be the videos id think first time visitors would find most interesting due to them being quite popular and more chance enjoyable to random viewing. I don't see how you can lose with top 15.

I do see suggested videos also being okay for random newer user or first timers(they are large recent vote getters), but for me and i assume other heavy users i have no interest in them(been there done that).

All this feedback is great. You've probably noticed we've already made several changes.

@oritteropo - Great specific suggestions.

Here's what I've done:

I've put the Top 15 New Videos fixed in the top of the sidebar. Below that is a dynamic, rotating panel that will randomly on every page load be one of these:
- Suggested Videos
- Related Videos
- More from this User
- Newest Submissions
- Expiring Soon
- Beggar's Canyon
- *Quality New Videos (brand new!)

Since the top videos are now in the sidebar, it doesn't make sense for them to be in the Watch menu, so it's now removed from there.

Was noticing that the longer video titles in the sidebar have a huge amount of space between the first and second line of text. On the #1 video the word hate just seems like its its own thing to read due to it not being visually attached (if that make sense) to the first line of text.

I also would/will miss the #of votes each currently have but i can see that it may be considered clutter.

Liking the change

You can see the votes when hovering.

Fixed the line spacing.

Thanks for that

Any chance of adding hovering votes to these sub menus. I know personally i like to see that info.

I think there are too many sub-menus to add more, at least for now.

[edit]
Misunderstood.

Votes and video length are now displayed when hovering over any video in the rotating sidebar panel.

It occurred to it makes more sense to put the Top 15 below the rotating panel because 1) otherwise the sidebar will look stale and exactly the same on every page load and 2) the rotating panel only has 5 videos, so it's much less to scroll past.

eric3579 says...

One more crazy though. Would be cool if i could somehow click to the next rotating side bar panel. I can refresh the page to do the same but a button that would just change that one group of panels seems cool( although im guessing that would be difficult to do). Anyway had to at least throw it out there.

I had the same thought and might implement something like that, but not in the immediate future.

I still need to re-integrate playlist functionality.

Modified the sidebar so that *quality posts are highlighted.

It seems like such an oversight that *quality videos, despite being the tagline for VideoSift, don't get too much spotlight.

Well not anymore, sister.

Maybe this isn't the right spot, but how do I add a video to a playlist now? I can't seem to find that in the new videosift.

Top-right corner of the page. The little list icon.
