I feel like the front page is getting stale and it is not getting refreshed quickly enough. I think videos should have a time limit on the front page rather than from the time to submitted. Like you have 3 days to make it to the front page, but you can only stay on the front page for 1 day. Maybe, it is really the top fifteen that needs to be refreshed.

I notice the Top X gets stale from time to time but the front page is constantly getting new stuff.

I'm configured for Top 30 and I swear on any given day there's only 3-5 new videos there.

Hmm, seems to me that if you looked at the screen once every 24 hours, the front page would be very different, with very little overlap. Am I wrong? Let's be scientific about it and see.

I think the front page is fine. Hot videos need to be on there for 24 hours, so people from different time zones and casual users will see the most popular videos.

Besides, if you regularly visit and you want new videos to see each time, you really should have your front page set to "newness".

Do people actually view by 'hotness'? I never even touch that setting because it only seems to ever show videos with 3 votes or videos from three years ago. View by newness, and and it'll be new vids constantly.

@direpickle: I think the majority of users use the "hotness" setting, not only because it's the default, but because they, like me, prefer it. I'm curious about it now, so I'll start a poll after this one ends.

As mentioned, if you want a never-stale stream of videos, just use the "newness" listing. That's all there is to it.

The staleness of the hotness listing is not specifically based on time, but based on the hotness of *other* videos. This means a video only persists on the front page until something hotter overtakes it. How quickly or slowly that happens is directly based on Sifter activity, which cannot be simulated.

In any case, as dag mentioned, it's pretty rare that any video remain on the front page for 2 days, and when that does happen, it's because the video is just very hot.

You should try newness then, because some of the hotness code seems to have been mixed in there .

I'm purely on newness and on page 3 and up I frequently get really odd "newnessessess" (how do you stop spelling this?) displayed. From page 3 for me right now, the videos displayed to me, by order on the page and truncated to most significant time increment are: 17 hours, 1 day, 3 weeks, 1 day, 1 week, 1 day, 20 hours, 1 month, 1 day, 1 day, 3 months, 1 day, 2 days, 2 days.

If new comments are made to the videos or they got recently promoted, I can see that, but that doesn't have to be the case. I've had 4+ year old videos pop up randomly in the front pages when ordered by newness with no significant activity documented for 2 years. I really hope Sifty doesn't start selling fresh seafood

A bit more on topic: The front page per se is fine for me, the top 15 could be cycled a bit more often. 48 hours in the top 15 is plenty.
