MythBusters Cannonball Experiment Gone Wrong... Hits Houses and Car in Dublin, CA
Grimmsays...

There was one show where they lost control of a car at full speed....it bust through the safety barrier and went up and over an embankment. They're lucky there wasn't a pre-school or something on the other side.

Or a REGULAR school... or a bunch of grownups... why does everybody make such a big deal over children and their safety? Those little squirts haven't done shit with their lives, I would think that losing ten or twelve of them would be no big deal compared to losing an adult who has actually accomplished something and/or paid into the tax system for a few years...

Shepppardsays...

Honestly, the fact that this seems to have been the Build team doesn't surprise me.

I like the three of them, they do some interesting stuff, but with Adam and Jamie they never seem to fuck around when it comes to safety, at least, not anymore. (A few things come to mind.. blowing up the shop tops that list)

But somehow the build team seems to come across as more.. well, reckless.

Maybe if they stopped SHOOTING STUFF all the time, I'd be interested in watching it again.

Seriously used to love the show, and then it just seemed to be gun myths, gun myths, gun myths... cannon myth, gun myths.

Sick of it, not interesting any more.

Did you not see that episode where they shot a cannon ball through somebodies house? Was fucking awesome.

Selektaasays...

No one got hurt, not "no one was in danger". That thing ripped THROUGH a bedroom, bounced across the street, and hit another house and a van. Plenty of danger there, everyone just got lucky.

edit: I do hope this doesn't adversely impact the show, though. Not trying to come off holier than thou

They could turn it into a full hour special showing you the dangers of owning and firing a ballistic cannon that has typical velocities past 1000 ft/s!

THEN...

Check in for the latest in the media's fear-mongering war: Are our nation's bomb ranges safe?

Here is another video with the Mythbusters showing up to apologize for what happened.

Mythbusters Apologize

Personally, I don't blame the Mythbusters at all. I think the ultimate responsibility MUST land in the hands of the bomb range or the firing range. If the range officials told the Mythbusters that the setup was OK and would not jeopardize anyone then there isn't much more to be put at the Mythbusters feet. The Mythbusters ultimately setup the final details like the angle of fire, but the officials should have the ultimate say if it's OK or not (they should have limitations as well, such as speed and angle of fire). In every episode I've seen, that has been the way it has seemingly went (they look off camera for an OK and then typical start their countdown or fire).

This looked to be a situation where they had a device that could do terrible things as it almost did, yet simply firing in a non-populated direction (if there was one) would have been better. Maybe the "hill" they fired at seemingly gave the perception all these years that an object at speed simply could not climb it or "skip" it. In the end it will spell out extra measures that must take place at that range, or to altogether disallow any such events in the future at that location.

Wow, lucky them to see the hosts to apologize.

Am I the only one whose first reaction when seeing the cannonball hole was "FAKE!!" ?

Tbh I had no idea a cannonball could do that kind of damage. I thought thay travelled a lot slower than 1000ft/s. Something with that kind of mass travelling at close to the speed of sound. I think I'd make sure there was a mountain or something between me and the nearest settlement when firing that thing.

And its not that surprising it missed those trash cans. A spherical projectile with no rifling? Yah, that shits gonna go anywhere it fucking pleases.

In a semi-related note my mum was missed by less than a metre by a bullet from a nearby shooting range when she was a teenager. I almost didn't exist due to similar accident as this

Big fan of the show. I am glad no one got hurt, but I can well imagine that the Build team got a severe chastising by one James Franklin Hyneman. He's usually in charge of safety, and someone could have easily been killed or hurt by this lapse. I don't know what happened, but I bet dimonds to dollars that the cannon was not anchored properly before it want off and the recoil probably kicked the barrel up just high enough to clear the hill the shot was supposed to go into. The Mythbusters themselves probably didn't set up the cannon - unless it was the home-made cannon that Tory did for the "Ball & Chain prison escape" episode. That was more like a mortar though, and not designed to fire laterally. I hope this incident makes a blooper show, or gets broadcast in some way. You KNOW they have footage on the accident right up to where the shot went bad.

Not the first time the build team has had a bad accident though. In "Hollywood Car Myths" they were testing the movie axiom of when a car goes full speed under a semi-trailer and gets the roof knocked off but is still drivable. The myth was confirmed - the car slid right under the trailer. But the car went off the safety track and kept on going at like 70 miles an hour... It went right off the track, off the course, up a hill, and over a fence. Kari Byron had a horrified look on her face and just said, "Uh oh..." Luckily in that case (also) no one got hurt, but there was a road not too far past the fence the car flew over and someone could have gotten really clobbered. In that case it was also not the Build Team's fault. The site's safety rigging must have failed somehow.

Xaielaosays...

What did they fire it from, a railgun?

I say it's a fluke. They've been shooting and blowing shit up there for years. I guess it missed the water barrels that were supposed to slow it down, and through the brick wall in the back, across the river, through a house, into a different neighborhood, struck a roof and slammed into a car.

I cant wait to see that episode!

Paybacksays...

One episode they shot a bowling ball out of a cannon and it bounced up and over the nearby hill at the range. I'm figuring they tried to stop that from happening with the water barrels and like Winstonfield said (oh man, I just threw up in my mouth a little, I agreed with him on something) it probably broke a restraint or something and lifted.

Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...

Ah - in the video clip above there is a shot of the cannon lying on its side. It appears to be the cannon that Tory built himself that they used for the "Ball and Chain Prison Escape" episode. It also appears to be mounted on a pair of old timey wagon wheels via some sort of shop-built rig. If there was any sort of anchoring system in place then I couldn't see it in the vid.

There's a reason why old style field artillery on wheels had that big wooden splay in the back. It provided an anchor point that prevented the canon from bucking up when fired. Looks like the Build Team took out thier home made cannon, had no anchoring system, and let fly with it. They used more powder than they did in that particular device in the past, and chaos ensued.

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that JD Nelson (who was on the site) didn't say something. He usually seems to be pretty savvy about explosives, and should have observed that the cannon needed some means of fixing in place. Doesn't seem like thier other explosive expert (Frank Doyle) was there, or it may have gone better. I also bet if Jamie or Adam had been around that this wouldnt' have happened. They have experience with firing real cannons from the Pirate episodes, and they probably would have noticed a problem.

You are wrong.

gharksays...

After appearing briefly in cameo's such as 'blowing holes through your bedroom wall' and 'I'm in ur minivan' the cannonball, affectionately known as 'The Juggernaut' has decided to retire, bitch.
