Doctors Find Small Fir Tree Growing in Man's Lung

VIA REUTERS: Russian surgeons say they have found a fir tree growing inside the lung of a man whom they operated on for suspected cancer.

Yeah right. Isn't a more likely explanation that this guy was passed out on a shitload of Vodka and his friends put a piece of pine in his throat? Or any number of explanations of this getting lodged in his lung that don't have to rely on a seed sprouting there.

Well I don't know much about botany, but if the little pine had even a little bit of a root system, it had to be "growing" in some sense. Just inhaling a piece of a pine bough wouldn't come with roots attached. I know plants can do some growing without much light to work with. Did you ever do that experiment in middle school where you put a plant in box with dividers in it, and it grows around them to get to the light? Maybe they can do a little bit of growing without light, just based on nutrients and such?

I dunno, maybe it's some viral video for some pine flavored Russian cigarette or something. heh

This just isn't fair! I have tried growing pines from seeds, and even just seedlings in my yard, and they just die! Do I have to start planting lungs on my front yard to have a growing fir tree!?? And if not just any kind of lungs?? No wonder my trees keep dying.. NOT fair!

yeah, how can anything that uses light as its source of energy grow in a pitch black lung? not to mention needing nutrients from soil and water.

In order to just START to grow, a plant needs no light. The seed can germinate in pitch darkness. However, the image they showed of the needles and such is unbelieveable entirely. The needles were huge compared to the size of the entire organism. WTF. Evergreens don't grow full-sized needles when they are sprouts in my experience. Someone correct me.

I'm trying to find the link, but Jay Ingram on @Discovery.ca confirmed this was an April Fools gag that was picked up by the media. If anyone can find it, knock'er out there =)

So why are organizations like Reuters not verifying these kinds of wacko stories then? Or is it just okay for the silly "In Other News" stories to be complete rubbish?

Crakesays...

This has made it around to a LOT of newspapers... Apparently they all just copy-paste what Reuters reports. And journalists wonder why newspapers are dying.

Obligatory Yakov Smirnoff comment about "In Soviet Russia..." inserted here.

Yeah, that was on my mind, but I'm having trouble coming up with it...

... how about: in Soviet Russia, plant eat you!

I mean, the plant would have CO2 from the lungs along with water from the body... i don't know what could substitute for sunlight, maybe another catalyst acted in its place
