Naw, A large percentage of users interact and comment before they get the feel of the site and understand the process. Since we already eliminate new users from seeing most of the interface when viewing videos this would just go one step further towards alienating new users.

I know when I started here, I commented for quite a while before I started my first post.

I think commenting and interacting is the real life experience that brings us all here, to eliminate that would be detrimental to the site.

Spammers suck, but they are a reality on the internet today. we already have a few user based tools to eliminate spammers as soon as they show up and that seems to be working.

Seeing if a new poster has been commenting is also a way for us to examine and weed out spam users. If a new user posts a video that may be spam, checking their comments is one of the best way to see if they are an active member or a spammer just passing through.

If we don't allow them to comment first, they they will all look like spammers...

This is a good point @Sagemind. Perhaps there are other ways to encourage users to drop their P's and actually contribute beyond commentary.

Why isn't commentary a contribution? I can look at videos on youtube. I stayed on the sift for the intelligent comments.

Then we might as well give up on having new users all together. It's already terrible to submit videos as a probationary member, kill the commenting too?

I did some research with a p account and I would never have started using the site if it was like it is now when I started. I get that we want to have quality users and have users want to identify with their user here, but imagine if reddit had a similar approach - content would dry up.

People should be more encouraged to submit content, not punished until they do.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

It's true.

I know the idea sounds exclusionary and elitist but I'm not totally against it because as a community we've always been about merit and earning inceasing rights and abilities based on contributions.

I'm not the only one who remembers the new member queue and how the site used to work exactly like this, right? That wasn't a dream?

Which is why I said "contribute beyond commentary."

I want to see what sort of video's people find interesting, and then correlate that with their comments. If all they do is post comments, never submit even a single video, I'm less likely to take them seriously as a member of the community.>> ^ChaosEngine:

Fair point.

Finding a video interesting and submitting a video are not the same thing. I honestly cannot tell you how many times I've seen an interesting video only to find it's already on here. A lot of people simply don't have the time to scour the web looking for original videos to post on here. For those that do, great, and I appreciate their effort, but I don't think we should penalise those that don't (beyond the existing restrictions)

I definitely engaged in the banter for a fair while before sifting a video. I find spammers quite amusing, also. There's so many OCD members that they get banished pretty much immediately anyway.

lucky760 says...

I have to agree with @probie and other dissenters.

Disallowing members (keep in mind they'll be new and old members) from any kind of participation would effectively cut our already low new-active-member growth down to zero.

I'm not sure I see the value in essentially closing the door to everyone who isn't able to get a video sifted. There have been many members in the past who tried hard to get rid of their P and just could never find a non-duplicate video good enough to get published.

Even for very active veteran members, it's still difficult to get a video published (unless you're @pumkinandstorm). And submitting videos is not the only aspect of the community. The overwhelming majority people who sign up don't do so to post a video, and if they do, they're probably a self-linker. They're more likely to sign up to participate in community discussion.

If we followed through with the plan, it'd probably be at best 1 in every 100 new members who are ever able or willing to successfully drop their P. And if a member can't comment, they really have no reason to be a member. Why do we want to work so hard to ensure we never get a new contributor to the site?

If we wanted to do something in the way of spam prevention (and, mind you, I already fight a hard one-man battle with them all day every single day), I think we could come up with a different community-based solution, like a star-curated queue for new member comments.

Yeah, I commented here for years until I finally submitted a video. I don't even remember/have access to those first accounts I had. And even though I've been here for years now, I still just carry the gold star because my primary motive is discussion and videos, not submitting new ones.

It is nice to be able to ban spammers now though.

berticus says...

could you implement some kinda captcha thing for new accounts (not permanent based on star level, but just temporary until they've posted like, 10 comments or something?) .. i don't know if that's technically unfeasible, just an idea.

also have to agree about motivation to be here, i almost never post videos now, and am here largely for the people and discussions.

That actually wouldn't help. 100% of the spam that's submitted on the Sift comes from real life organic human beings.

lucky760 says...

Regarding that idea I ^threw out there, I actually really would like to take the spam handling burden off of myself and spread the responsibility of moderating new member comments to you, the community. Most are caught automatically by siftbot's awesome software, but the rest require human consideration.

Any thoughts on that? Maybe I should start a poll.

ReverendTed says...

Resurrecting a month-old post, but commenting has already been relegated to a second-class activity on the Sift. Used to be people were rewarded with Star Points for applauded comments, while now it's just Power Points, which are only useful on videos. It doesn't matter how much you contribute to the discussion and community (or even moderation) on the Sift, you can only "move up" by getting videos published.
I don't mean to suggest everyone should see that as a problem, but that's how it is.
