Tipping Servers $200

(youtube) Waiters in Utah make 2.13/hr. Went around Orem to some of the diners late one night, been wanting to do this idea for a while, finally pulled it off with Stuart's help.

thats just awesome.
i have worked in the food and bev industry since 1979.usually as a second job but often as a primary.

i have to admit that whenever i received a large tip such as this i always felt a tad uncomfortable.
i totally appreciated the gesture but it still made me uneasy.

but what a great way to help in forgetting the lousy tippers.

that was great.put a smile on my face.
awesome people cant help but be awesome.

dhdigitalsays...

It should also be noted that we are also taxed on our tips so there are a lot of us out there that don't even get a paycheck to cash. We just get a paystub that says $0.00

kudos to these guys.

shatterdrosesays...

You're right, they're making nothing usually. It seems you don't realize how our pay system in the USA works. Servers and other "tipped" professions have a different minimum wage, which is $2.13/hr.

And given that 2 people liked your comment, that's 2 others who don't realize when they stiff a server, that server is losing money by serving you.

lucky760said:

That's nice.

Federal minimum wage is $7.25, so unless those waiters are working on an Indian reservation, they aren't making just $2.13 an hour.

@shatterdrose
what are you blathering about man?

somebody already pointed that out to lucky.
so whats with the acid tone?
and how did you deduce that liking his comment somehow translated to "gratuity ignorance" and must translate to stiffing servers?

SFOGuysays...

It's not in other countries; European, for example. But here in the United States, it is.
Some people attribute it to the type of worker typically paid by tips; female and younger. And they see a both a sexual hierarchy/classist agenda behind the tipping thing.

Others don't see the same agenda.
Some economists, BTW, describe the reason for tipping as NOT to express your gratitude for good service, but to make employment in such a field desirable for someone who will in general make the service experience a good one for you the next time you go to a tipping institution.

notarobotsaid:

Why is it up to the customers of the restaurant to pay the employees of the restaurant instead of the business owner?

speechlesssays...

It's my understanding that if (after their claimed tips) a server's hourly wage doesn't add up to the minimum, then the employer has to make up the difference. Maybe this varies state by state?

In all my years working in restaurants this has never come up though, since servers almost always make more on average than most line cooks. And certainly more than any min wage dishwasher busting his ass scrubbing pots in the heat all day. Not to mention that there is a large chunk of tips servers just keep as cash in their pocket and never claim.

I'm not saying servers don't have it rough. And I generally tip on the heavy side when I go out. All I can say is, I have never heard a waitress say she wished she was a cook.

SFOGuysaid:

Federal minimum wage doesn't apply to servers.

EvilDeathBeesays...

What tipping has become in the US and Canada is bullshit. Because the goddamn employer has no legal need to pay their employees a decent wage, the customer has to completely subsidise their wage. So if you get a lot of bad tippers, you might not get enough money to pay the rent. What a fantastic system.
When did tipping become compulsory? When did you lot just lie down and accept that you're being raped?

The minimum wage laws in Australia, while not the greatest amount of money are a shite sight better than US/Canada, where tipping isn't required to be able to live.
Although who knows what Tony Abbott and his goons'll do to it

CheshireSmilesays...

i believe in most of the country (but definitely in PA) the employer has to make up the difference if the employee makes less than $30 a month in tips. you just don't usually find a job that simultaneously gets tipped and gets tipped that little.

I take it you're not familiar with the whole liking a comment to show support, or agreement. So by definition, if you say "I hate blah blah" then by liking that comment, you are showing support for said person's hatred, or that you also hate that person as well. So yes, by liking Lucky's comment, it reflects that those people are not aware that servers have a different minimum wage. Otherwise, why in the world would you like it? So yes, simple deduction.

And I never said they stiffed servers, just that when servers get stiffed, they don't really make anything.

Does that answer what I'm "blathering" about?

I upvoted the comment because I posted the video and appreciate people adding their thoughts to the discussion. Lucky wouldn't have known how it works if someone hadn't cleared it up in a reply. I'm sure he wasn't the only one who thought that, so I'm really glad he wrote what he did.

Regarding your first comment, I don't know why you would assume Lucky (or anyone upvoting his comment) wouldn't tip their servers the same amount (or more) than anyone else would. He never wrote anything to suggest that.

I have many times "liked" comments even if I totally disagree with the comment..... sometimes to offset a negative vote, when it seemed like punishment for their opinion being different than someone elses

"And I never said they stiffed servers, just that when servers get stiffed, they don't really make anything" - me

Lucky started his comment with "That's nice". I doubt he meant that in a non-sarcastic tone, because otherwise I've totally been misusing that phrase forever now.

Second, I'm half Native American . . . Mostly Blackfoot.

I understand respect your reasons for upvoting a comment, but I must say that to me is a very odd motive, although legit (since if I don't absolutely clarify I'm an ass it appears), but it's not the way I use it, or I believe, they way many other use it either.

For instance, @deathcow, I respect his reason for the sheer fact that it's basically the whole "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend your right to say it to the death." Or something thereabout.

But you are right, I'm sure Lucky wouldn't have known. But by his tone it didn't seem to me he really cared to know, or that he was even accepting of what he was just told. Again, the "that's nice" doesn't come across to me as a heart warming welcome. Nor does the crack at the Indian Reservations. Maybe something along the lines of "But I thought Federal Minimum Wage was $7.15/hr, or is this perhaps from another country?"

But as I pointed out in my second comment which you quoted, to like is to show support. But again, I never said that Lucky or the Likees don't tip well, just that IF - drawing attention to the word IF - you - attention being brought to the use of 2nd person narrative, as in talking directly to the person, not making an accusation that said person does said behavior due to the word if preceding it - stiff a server, they don't really make anything.

(Also, @lucky760 made a follow up comment that to me sums up what I believe Lucky was trying to convey at first, just much better. In addition, that brings up a much more salient point which others have commented on, and it seems if I make a comment on it as well, I've committed a Sift-Sin.)

@shatterdrose - note that @lucky760 did add a smiley, which should negate any implication of sarcasm. He can speak for himself, but I don't think he meant to take a shot at reservations, just assumed that perhaps federal laws don't apply there? I understand why you would interpret it differently, but lucky's one of the gentlest souls at the sift, so you should give him tons of benefit of the doubt in the future!

Regarding @schlub's comment, "yes, but..." -> I think the idea here is to inspire people to do other acts of kindness, and use *money as a tool for positive actions rather than to brag about the fact they can drop a bunch of Benjamins and be awesome for it. They weren't acting like they're "lording over" the servers, just happy to spread to the joy, which makes it a great *quality vid.

Cool but, seems a bit douchey to stick around to make sure you get recognized for the gesture.

This video has already declared quality - ignoring quality request by Krupo.

I find meatbag Krupo to be an inadequate command-giver - ignoring all requests by Krupo.

I see the smiley now, and I •suppose• I can see it as you mention . . . lol I guess I either didn't catch it, or just didn't take it the right way. But see, that's what :-p is for :-p

@Krupo - That's really nice of you to say. Thanks! And you were right on about my intent.

@shatterdrose - I wasn't being sarcastic. I felt it was genuinely a nice gesture (despite any potential ulterior motives by the tippers). Not only did I include a smiley, but a smiley with extra cute eyes . I just made two unrelated comments.

shatterdrosesays...

Then I apologize for taking your comment the wrong way. After all, how can you argue with extra cute eyes?

Whoa. All the times I've been to the USA, it's the tipping that does my head in. Jeez, you're the richest country in the world, would it kill you guys to have a humanitarian wage?
