all types of awesome, and some new types, rolled into one.

This will shoot straight to #1. Probably close to 125 votes.
And it seems that this was done in the same way as the Dancing Hula Girl - originally performed at a slower pace, then sped up enough to be the original pace.

AeroMechanicalsays...

I don't really see why it would have to be time shifted as I'm sure it *could* be done naturally. Moreover, just speeding up the recording would (obviously) change the pitch or result in audible distortions from the algorithm to maintain it. It could be played slower, recorded on the sequencer and then sped up separately and the playback mixed with the sped up video--but now we're at a point where it's just as well to fake the whole thing anyways.

Darkhandsays...

This is not timeshifted, I disagree.

I can move both my hands and my feet that fast if I want too. It amazes some people but for some reason I've always been able to do that with a lot of accuracy as well for hitting notes etc.

FAKE

I mean, I know there are 2 keyboards,
and there are foot pedals, but there are more than 4 samples at one time, and I don't see her pressing function buttons that often to change the sound samples for the keyboards.

I agree. There are too many samples only having 4 sources of input, 2 hands 2 feet. Unless her right foot changes modes according to toe movement then I call fake as well. She could have recorded other samples and is playing them back while playing the other parts, but then what's the impressive part...

ipfreelysays...

I don't see how some of you can state that it is fake. When all you are looking at is a youtube video. You are actually going to say it's fake because you see some artifacts from a youtube video.. I seriously doubt your judgment.

It can be done:
http://www.videosift.com/video/Incredible-One-Woman-Orchestra-Qi-Zhang

This woman is performing in front of TED conference... you going to call that one a fake as well?

Why not just enjoy someones incredible talent instead of making stupid comments? Someone obviously spent tremendous about of time to do this. Yet couple Internet experts are going to call this person a fake.

Seriously some of you people need to get a life.

blutruthsays...

First, let me say that I'm sick and tired of the crowd that says, "since I can't do it, it must be fake." So I'm going to take this time to give you all a reason to shut the hell up.

Now that we have that out of the way, let's get some information in here to stop all the speculation. The instrument in question is more than capable of producing the sounds you hear. It is called a Yamaha Electone STAGEA ELS-01X electronic organ. The STAGEA features over 180 digital effects with the ability to add in rhythm and accompaniment.

If you want to hear what it is capable of in the hands of a virtuoso, check out Qi Zhang's performance at TED. I'm pretty sure they can't get away with any camera trickery there.

lol.. hold your fingers to block out the table leg that cuts across the legs.

You'll see the leg clearly isn't possible in anyway. The lower leg is about the size of the forearm. But the upper leg is, well, mutant. Go measure it...

Seriously, go measure with your finger or post-it or ruler. It's clearly a mutant or a faked video.

To those doubters, go kick your self in the butt. You'll see where the lower leg is relative to upper. Now go watch the video again and tell me this wasn't video shopped.

Is that what you do all day? Hold up your fingers to the monitor and take measurements while the video plays?
What other sites do you do this at?

Xaxsays...

I've no reason to think this is fake, and don't see any good reason for anyone to call it fake. Perhaps some here need to spend some time with a musical instrument so they won't be so easily confused by them.

i'm not calling any video editing trickery, but to me this looks a bit like guitar hero/rock band.
all the notes are prerecorded and no matter what key you press the proper notes will play. so you just bash keys in rhythm and it sounds like you are playing the real thing.

MarineGunrocksays...

Holy shit. I think I started the debate, so let me say that it's NOT FAKE, just done with video editing. This is "fake" like the Groovy dancing girl video is "fake". The sound is slowed down in that one so she can dance to it, as the human body is not capable of moving that fast. Then, it's sped up to normal for viewing.

I'm saying the same thing was done here. Sounds were produced at intentionally lower pitches, and then the video is sped up. Just watch her arms. Either there's a couple of frames missing, or they teleport from one side of the piano to the other.

jmdsays...

Westy, actually the software front on music synthesis is pretty piss poor, with PC based wavetable midi pretty much extinct. You can still grab lots of sound patches from downloads, but they pretty much get put back into hardware wavetables and the pianos themselves now.

Btw the Atelier line of organs runs over 20k.

rychansays...

Hey I'm not one to scream "FAKE!" quickly either, but I don't see how she's playing some of the instruments, such as the fast snare drum at 0:33. I'm pretty sure neither of her hands are playing that drum sound. The right hand is playing the main melody, and the left hand is not moving when that snare drum is rapidly beating. Both of her feet/legs look perfectly still to me. That instrument continues being played throughout the piece.

I also don't see what she's pressing to change instruments for the keyboards. But I don't know what the fight foot does on this keyboard.

All the VST's I currently use sound really good With Manny of them used in Chart music and some Game/film scores

Granted over the last 6 years i have probably spent over 1,000 on music software But its all worth it as it as you only have to produce 2 hours of music to have repaied that cost and u have complete freedom to make any sound you want ie a full production setup.

Other than the lay out and automation for playing stuff live these eltrnom organ synths seem very impractical, Expensive and large. watching people play it its not that remarkable as any one can learn how to play an instrument to a reasonable standard within 6 years. ( if you go on you tube u can watch many clips and see how these work to see its not that remarkable to play something like Jurassic park / star wars theme ) , no more remarkable than jumping a motocross bike getting a 2.1 degree , winning some county level tennis matches.

the problem with music instrument industry is its full of pompous twats that buy into all the overpriced shit , its like photography to some existent where it costs me £50 to get something for my canon SLR that is cheep and mass produced.

Her left foot is on timpani for the most part.

Yeah, although it does shift to other instruments occasionally.

I wish all of you who are criticizing us for questioning the authenticity would explain to me how she's playing the snare drum. Another place where it seems, to me, like it's a background track is at 2:26 where the Imperial March starts. Again, I'm not trying to be overly skeptical.

westysays...

The organ sycles though instruments based on a preset program, it can allso have 2 things be played from 1 key press , or play an apageated sequence of notes when you hold keys down, by using all these functions together it is possible to do things that would normally require 4 hands and 4 legs

dystopianfuturetodaysays...

This looks real to me.

Patch changes - You can program keyboards to follow music and change patches at appropriate times. You can also layer patches, so that you can play several instruments at the same time. Combine the two along with some skill and you have the ability to play an orchestral piece with two hands and two feet.

Sped up? - No. This isn't as difficult as it sounds. Try turning off the volume and just watching the performance. This is well within the grasp of a decent organist.

Percussion? - It does sound like some of it is tracked or perhaps triggered via patch changes.

rychansays...

Yeah, it's less impressive if she's playing along with pre-programmed percussion tracks. And it seems to be the growing consensus that she is (although please jump in to explain otherwise).
