RedLetterMedia's Avatar Review

He is still entertaining, and quite insightful.

He says the basic things:

* Avatar's story was very simplistic and very intentionally emotive
* But it was still gorgeous and amazing to watch

I don't always go to movies to be given a really rich story, sometimes I go for the 'experience'. Avatar gives me an experience such like I haven't had at a movies since... well, I can't think of another one quite like it.

So I give it two thumbs up.

But I would have added a third thumb had he made the story a bit better.

I loved the movie to bits, watched it twice in a matter of days, but I love this review also. Some people, like myself, may be perfectly aware of simplicity, cliche etc but still be able to thoroughly enjoy a film anyway.

I really don't get all the criticism of Avatar. No, the plot wasn't original. Avatar just offered an unoriginal narrative better than it's predecessors.

This concept of 'white guilt' is intriguing to me. Railing against a film for supposedly rehashing that white guilt even moreso. Native Americans WERE almost wiped out by (exclusively) white folks interested in land and resources. This is not to say you should feel guilty today - but it does make me wonder why discussing it (or including it in a movie plot) should be so taboo. Don't be so sensitive. (As an aside, this kind of resource grabbing at the expense of native populations continues to this day.)

How dare Cameron make a film we don't all love. The audacity! How dare Cameron portray unbridled greed and environmental destruction in a negative light. What an asshole! What gives him the right to make films I am not obligated to watch?!?!? How dare he not make a perfect film! Doesn't he know we have all made such a huge emotional investment in him since Aliens/T2/The Abyss that we expect nothing less than perfection from him?!?

Avatar rocked. That's just the way it is folks.

I'd argue about the navi being too perfect. Did no one else notice the broken hearted warrior who was cast aside by the chick cos she got to mother some hot foreigner? That seemed pretty sucky to me and I was acutely aware of the hypocrisy of the girl's virtue throughout the movie. (Spot the dude who's been fucked over in the past...) You also had their ignorance of the human culture (i.e. not wanting to know) which seemed a bit rich.

The marines... they were there for the money, not the murder. I figured every man there must have had a pretty crappy back story to need to spend however long in cryogenic sleep to come to a foreign planet with a high fatality rate knowing that when they got home everyone would be 20 years older. There were doing a job with a hope of a better life at the end.

I also thought that the greed of the higher positioned people made sense, at least from today's perspective. 1-dimensional people do exist and non-human entities like corporations will employ 1-dimensional people to suit their aims.

Maybe I just made up my own themes to make the movie more enjoyable for myself but I thought Pocahontas 3d was great - that's just my 2 cents.
