So, is it like an "Alien" prequel? Or maybe a way later sequel? You gotta love that a lot of the imagery here is borrowed from Cameron's "Aliens", and of course, Giger.

If it IS is a prequel, I gotta wonder if they'll still be using green-screen monitors on their spaceships.

EDIT: oh yeah, it's all there on IMDB but I won't spoil it for anyone.

Fusionautsays...

Yep, that big horse-shoe shaped ship is the ship from the first two Alien movies. Halfway through you can see the cockpit pop up that is in the first movie as well. >> ^Ryjkyj:

Hmmm, so I guess they went with prequel after all. There was ALL this talk about how he abandoned the concept of making it a prequel, but from those images, I just don't see how it couldn't be.

Edit: just so we are clear. I have the same feelings that Gwizz does, was just surprised that it is in fact a sequel.

That's because Dan O'Bannon recruited Giger for the alien creature design after working with him on Jodorowsky's failed attempt to make Dune.

POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING BLAH

when i first started reading about prometheus and how ridley scott always wondered about the space jockey and wanted to explore that, i was so excited.. but then HE GOES OFF THE FUCKING DEEP END with the plot!! i'm hoping it really, REALLY doesn't matter...

shagen454says...

That is an interesting piece of info I did not know about. I never really understood why they went with Lynch for Dune, either. Not that that was a bad idea, I know a lot of people complain about Lynch's adaptation but I liked it a lot. I bet Jodorowsky's version would have been absolutely insane and even less on point with the Dune novel. I can only imagine all of the shit Jodorowsky could shove into that.

wiki: "he planned to cast the surrealist artist Salvador Dali as the Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, who requested a fee of $100,000 per hour. He also planned to cast Orson Welles as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who only agreed when Jodorowsky offered to get his favourite gourmet chef to prepare his meals for him throughout the filming.[23] The book's protagonist, Paul Atreides, was to be played by Jodorowsky's own son, Brontis Jodorowsky. The music would be composed by Pink Floyd, Magma, Henry Cow and Karlheinz Stockhausen"

Damn, man has some fine taste in music. And yep, looks like it would have been insane.

Very, very excited. It's not going to suck - Ridley Scott doesn't make bad movies.

However, he has made a string of very mediocre movies lately. He has definitely become more mainstream as he has matured as a director. He certainly isn't as bold as he was earlier in his career with Alien and Blade Runner. Regardless, Ridley Scott even considering sci-fi again is really all I need to keep living. I still am looking forward to this movie very much regardless of how much it tramples all over the Alien "mythos".

The alien mythos has already been thoroughly trampled by things like AVP.>> ^Ferazel:

Weird times. The days of hiring directors like Lynch to take over a science fiction epic are over. It didn't work and it's not what people want to see.

If Jodorowsky had made Dune, it would have given a handful of people hard ons and Rocky Horror would have fallen to the way side as the midnight movie standard. All in all, I think there'd be less trannys and Hedwig and the Angry Inch would never have been made.

Frank Herbert, Dan O'Bannon, Jodorowsky, Dali, Welles, and Pink Floyd all under one roof? The entire movie would have been one big water of life spice orgy. Pregnant women viewing the movie would've given birth to abominations possessed by Orson Welles.

My color/pseudo-genre comparison of Alien movies:

Alien: silver and gold / haunted house
Aliens: grey blue and green / vietnam
Alien 3: yellow (piss-soaked) / prison
Alien Resurrection: cyan and maroon (brown) / French farce

I might watch the trailer a couple more times, but aside from that I'm not watching any more footage of this movie before it comes out. These movies are my favourite. I'm thrilled to see Ridley swoop back in to elevate it after the drudging it's gone through over the past 20 years.

I wonder if pasting Gwiz' comment from the Alien trailer will work?

Color observations of the alien franchise
Alien - gray (black/white)

Alien Resurrection - green.
Will the new prequel by Ridley Scott be red, perhaps?

Noomi Rapace (original G.W.D.T. trilogy), Guy Pearce (Memento, LA Confidential), Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba (the Wire), Logan Marshall-Green.

Two things really hit me after watching the original trailer in the first time since forever:
a) 20 years after that trailer, I'd be going to music festivals where they'd be playing that kind of music for hours on end
b) If I didn't know Alien, I'd really want to watch that movie after that trailer. Is it just me or have the past 10 years been rather disappointing cinema wise? Here's hoping to a change in trends and the comeback of the good movies.

I found the evolving title text overlay to be very visually distracting.

I just watched "Alien" last night for the first time in a long time. The "evolving text" is totally a theme. Yet another way this preview reflects the original.
