I'm sure that it would never happen. I think there's a bit of a point when your example would absolutely be deemed a discriminatory reason for firing someone.

Don't get me wrong though, this guy is a dumb dumb. Is he just as offended by coffee talk about somone's divorce? Affairs? How about weekend benders? I presume nobody at his place of work uses the Lord's name in vain while he's at work?

My problem with guys like this is the misunderstanding of their own faith and the bizarre notion that homosexuality is somehow special in the laundry list of sinful things that virtually everyone around him will do. I'd be willing to wager that the lady who complained about his workplace expression of homophobia to HR and got him fired, who is having her right to marry denied because homophobes are willing to vote away other peoples right, is probably more offended than you are.

I just figured the figurative language better expressed my feeling on the matter. Clearly I wasn't trying to claim right to the absolute most offense over something that happened to strangers thousands of miles away.

I tend to be of the opinion that mouthing off to your boss over a personal difference of opinion is reasonable grounds for firing be it religion, sexual orientation, or the weather. It's not about being fired because of your religion, orientation, or weather preferences but over being completely disrespectful to your boss or co-workers.

While I do agree that being a dick should not be legally defensible as religious expression, it's unfortunately creates all sorts of gray areas. People can be offended by anything, and allowing employers to decide what public opinions their employees may hold is in direct conflict with the rights of citizens in a society which claims to value freedom of expression. I am content to have it either way, but it should be consistently applied, unfortunately nothing ever is.

The thing that strikes me about this guy is that he is a clear copy-cat of carrie prejean. The argument " you can't hold me responsible for what I say if I invoke god" was her MO, and all her worshipers have fed this absurd notion that claiming to be religious should be a free pass. I don't think anybody in that camp will get how ridiculous this guys whining is.

Legally, I'm not sure he should've been fired, but I'm fine with it regardless. Nobody should be required to work out anything here except himself. Why should the manager have to censor herself when talking about her fiance? That's ridiculous. It's his problem to work out.

I've had a similar experience. In my previous job my boss occasionally brought his dog over to the office. After it happened a few times I asked to talk to him privately and explained that I, personally, perceive dogs as sexual objects, I consider their presence in the workplace promiscuous and offending as I'm often tempted to engage in sexual intercourse with them in the supply closet. Imagine my surprise when he laughed at me. I wasn't fired but decided to quit in favor of my current position as a vet's assistant.

Except that its perfectly natural to be excited about an upcoming marriage, straight people can do this without any issue. Also, flaunting it is more like flaunting the death of your sex life than anything else about it.

I work in Massachusetts, and that guy is an idiot. The company he works for, Brookstone, is well known in New England. They expect their employees to be professional. Professionals do not bring up politics or religion in the work place. When your outside of the office or company functions, THEN, you can air your crap about company and the idiots you work for. Just as long as those idiots aren't able to know you said, what you said about them.

While gay marriage is legal in MA, its not as common as straight marriage. Even upon hearing it from someone I knew, I laughed, not realizing they had said it. The person smiled and said she has gotten that already. That it takes a few seconds for the concept to sink in. Afterward I 'congrat' her, and asked who proposed and how.

Massachusetts is a pretty diverse beliefs, when it comes to religion. We have muslims, jews, christians, wiccans, taoists, buddists, athesits, agnostics, and a few who believe the way of the Jedi. Most are Christian. It stems in part, from our puritan roots with the Mayflower and the pilgrims.

Sounds like the guy was fired for being unprofessional, not because he's a christian.

edit - Okay, I immediately suspected this guy of being gay the second he opened his mouth. It feels like he's overly sensitive about the subject because his belief in lies and mythology conflict with his genetic makeup. He's not allowed to be what nature has created him as, and he doesn't want to accept the fact that maybe GOD isn't around to make sure that nobody is CREATED as homosexual.

I've no doubts that this kid has serious relationship problems because he is unable to bring himself to have any kind of attraction toward women, and his beliefs won't allow him to accept a man either. But of course, as Christians despise healthy sexuality, he won't allow himself to find out that he simply cannot get aroused by a woman until he misguidedly marries one.

Also, why is it okay for Christians (or any religulous group, really) to openly spout bullshit in the streets, go door-to-door, preach to strangers, etc. about their frighteningly blinding beliefs, but it's not okay for normal people (homosexual or otherwise) to discuss their lives? It's okay for him to make sure everyone knows he's an easily-offended Christian crybaby, but it's not okay for others to be themselves.

This is the one singularly most annoying thing about Christians, I think--their undying oversensitivity and unabashed perspective of self-importance. It's one thing to believe something, but to put yourself above others in such an arrogant way is really what puts them over the top, in terms of human filth.

HOWEVER, I don't believe it was within this employer's ethical responsibility to fire him over his beliefs, no matter how deranged and irritating they may be. Although, this is probably a very biased account, and we don't really know what exactly transpired. He probably got emotional, indignant, and hostile, and THAT was the reason he was terminated. It would be nice to get the other party's side of things.
