Glenn Beck squirms away from explaining "White Culture"

"What do you mean by 'White Culture'?"

"Ummm, aah, mumble, mumble, the point is, Obama is racist!"
KnivesOutsays...

Unbelievable. Can't answer a simple question, he dodges it like a bullfighter. And it's not just an innocent offhand remark he made about something trivial, and someone is making a big deal over nothing. He said the black President has a deep-seated hatred of white culture, that's pretty non-trivial. He can't even step up to the plate and say that it was an ill-advised remark that he didn't think through, and that he's sorry it came out that way. He doesn't dedicate one breath to explaining his bombshell remark. He just says "go to my website, it's all there" and then accuses Katie of playing games with him, like that's all there is to it.

And comes back with this pompous "for the FIRST TIME in HISTORY (you should check on it), someone can ask......blah blah blah". What the hell is he talking about? He's now a victim and being persecuted for "asking questions"?

I would have had my first iota of respect for this guy if he had said it was a dumb remark and he regrets it. But to not be able to explain it and to forge on ahead, as if being asked about it fits in with all the conspiracies he goes on about, he is beyond the pale.

It's like Michael Moore, when asked about to comment on statistics that contradict his glowing reports about waiting times in Canadian emergency rooms, he comes back with "well, I think a better question is how come Canadians live 3 years longer than us?" Just answer the freakin question.

This tops the Palin interview in my opinion. Three minutes of delicious waffling! Pass the syrup!

And Katie Couric did not let up with the question. After every waffle, she calmly posited the question again and again. Very effective demeanor, a good contrast to a blustery Chris Matthews interrogation. I think she made Beck look more the fool.

And, what's so hard about the question? It's a very simple, innocuous query. I think Beck was afraid he would not be able to control himself, and say something he usually posts on Stormfront.

....Either that or inadvertently confess to that rape and murder.

Oh and hey, Glen Beck, dude...as a human, you have the right to admit you were wrong or that you said something that came out wrong. If you do, you don't even have to explain it. You don't have to dance around it or try and look cool. Simply say: "you know what, I know what I said 'sounds' racist, and I apologize, I made an error in talking from wit, and I'll try to limit my mistakes as much as possible." That would've gotten him off the hook in my eyes.

I mean, I still would've thought he was a raving lunatic, but at least I would've understood that he knows what he is.

...and that he raped and murdered a girl in 1990

I think that even he doesn't know what he's really talking about. Too bad he didn't answer it, cause now I really want to know what he meant by it! I really don't want to help him out by going to his website, maybe he's just trying to generate hits for money! Holy crap I am rambling on like glenn beck now! I like turtles!

Geez, how hard is it to say Shakespeare, Vivaldi, Bach, Elvis Presley, etc.? Really, Katie could have made him look even dumber by breaking the question into smaller, more detailed questions. What makes a culture? What is a culture? What are elements of "white" culture, etc. Who are some white artists, philosophers, etc.? If he can't answer these questions the audience knows his IQ is low enough to be institutionalized. Which it is, and he should be.

White culture is kinda hard to define. Any specific culture itself requires a description of commonality, which therefore must involve generalisations. Then there's the fact that in the west the majority of people are white, so the culture is mainstream and therefore shared by most other cultures, further blurring the lines of definition.

However, this has nothing to do with Beck's statement because when he said 'white culture' he really meant 'white people', and his response here is uncomfortable as he's only comfortable being racist in the company of his own choir.

This isn't journalism. It's gnostic condescension. She's looking to put a feather in her cap at the expense of someone's career. Beck is right not to answer this. Couric is too daft to stop asking after he told her he wasn't going to answer the question.

I remember when FOX and it's representatives weren't given the time of day. Ever. What happened to that? Now that FOX is the big dog the other outlets fall all over themselves to talk about FOX and rail against FOX and interview FOX commentators. I guess FOX must really get inside people's heads.

longdesays...

Noone said it's journalism. It's an interview that Beck agreed to, for his own publicity. And he can't even answer a softball question. Perhaps he has never taken a humanities course, visited an art museum, or tuned into a classical music radio station.

I agree with you that this fool should not be given the time of day, much less revered by the toothless set.

^Oh, I don't know . . . isn't Katie Couric a journalist? And didn't she win a Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism for an interview she did with Sarah Palin?

She's called a journalist, and this is called journalism, but I'm reminded that on my bookshelf is a rock that looks like a potato.

It's not a softball question. It's the question.

Is that the best defense you have of Beck in this video? If there was nothing wrong with his original statement, then there should be nothing wrong with elaborating on and explaining it. Couric's intentions shouldn't matter, in fact if she had some kind of career-cannabilistic malicious intent, that's all the more reason to set her straight with an intelligent answer.

"What is white culture?" is the ultimate softball question---that is, if you are not a white supremacist.

In grade school, most of the history, social studies, and humanities courses I took dealt with this question. Any american elementary school graduate is qualified to answer this question. Yet a grown man, who purports to be a big time social critic can't.

"What's that behind your back?" is a hard question if your intent is loutish.

I want to know more about the rape and murder accusation from 1990. Either way, I believe Glenn Beck caused 9/11. He also shits on kittens and steals food from babies. He's the sixth rung of hell. He's a real shithole. My father likes him. Sigh.

Glenn Beck - 'I think Obama is anti-Magician. He has no respect for Magician heritage.'

Viewer - 'What is Magician heritage?'

Glenn Beck - '... aahh! You almost trapped me there! I almost insinuated how much I dislike non-Magicians, like that no-good Obama!'

-end of metaphor-

Towards the end of the interview she asks him about his mormon faith, and his emotional response and what he says makes it quite clear that he's sure there's an eternity of solace and harmony awaiting him no matter what happens in this life.

He's not a horrible monster, he just has enough charisma (heavy emphasis on 'just'), mixed with just enough stupid to be dangerous in front of a camera (heavy emphasis on 'stupid'). When he's in the Fox studio he can just shoot from the hip, making up whatever he likes and there's no one there to call him on it. Then he gets to an interview like this and suddenly he's not quite so sure he meant what he said.

poolcleanersays...

White culture? Sure, if by culture he's referring to the failure that is white suburbia in America. Row after row after row after row of houses that all look the same, filled with bored, uncreative white Christians watching reality television. What's fun? Shopping at Wal-Mart!!! That's America's "white culture".

Show me a more apt description of white culture in America, I'll drive down to South Carolina and steal one of my cousin's trailers. Maybe I'll get laid, who knows.

I'm gonna go listen to some Black Flag.
