This is an independent short film based on the Half Life game series. It was made by the Purchase Brothers on a 500 dollar budget. May I say...wow.

Amazing work indeed. I predict this going to #1, because with the work they've done and the attention to detail these guys definitely deserve it.

Fun fact - panorama footage of "City17" at approx. 0:40 is that of Riga, Latvia, which is, incidentally, my home town. Hadn't noticed the Citadel as of yet, though.

my girlfriend actually knows these guys, and knowing that I play half life she'd been telling me about this project for a while. So as soon as they put it up she made sure to send me a link and i made sure to share the wealth

AWESOME. It's about damn time. I don't know how HL hasn't had a movie yet but Gears of War is already lined up for one.

Great video! Literally gave me goosebumps.

But seriously, like $200 for the video camera and $300 for the video editing software.

I'd think Valve don't want to f*ck up/sell out the franchise. Didn't you see Max Payne?

great little film, look forward to seeing the rest. looks very nice

there is a reason HL hasn't been made into a film. Valve, like the rest of know that there are NO good films based on games, not one. Therefore it's entirely likely that a HL film will suck donkey balls, it shouldn't, HL is brilliantly told story, but a film.. well the odds are definately against it being good!

budzossays...

I think HL has one of the most natural fits for a movie. It should definitely tell the story of Gordon Freeman, but make him a total cypher to start out, and have his character be truly blank and laconic. The biggest mistake they could make would be trying to round out his character by use of flashbacks or exposition. Even worse would be if they tried to tie Freeman's involvement with the Black Mesa incident to Freeman's own past before the incident. Like if they pulled a George Lucas and made it so that the G-Man knew Gordon Freeman's father, and Gordon had been subtly manipulated into a post-apocalyptic messiah since conception. That would be stupid, typical Hollywood not-getting-it.

Paybacksays...

I would think the best HL/HL2 movie would not be centered on Freeman at all. Much like Opposing Force and Blue Shift centered on background characters, having the movie tell a different story of the same world would work. JJ Abrahms or Joss Whedon please.

So *dark, it's made by guys from Toronto, *Canada. Valve is so impressed it's one of the updates when you launch Steam this weekend.

That's why they should get THESE guys to make it!

Way to go ant, you killed them.

But seriously, looks like their hosting service shut them off for the mega-traffic spike they must be enjoying. Silly hosting company should've cut a deal for advertising on their hosting service in exchange for a cap amnesty. <shrug>

Kruposays...

Huh, I checked out the hosting company - it's sketchy. www,hostmds,com/?id=vistapages

I munged up the URL there b/c I don't want to send you to it - it's a pain to back out of that window - 'a "live operator" wants to offer you a deal' before you leave. Ugh. I want out, I WANT OUT.

Plus, the site claims unlimited transfers, and yet Purchase Bros failed. Did they not pay the $4.95?

Have you played HL2: Episode 2? I'm not sure that would be inconsistent with the logic of the HL2 universe. It would have to be done subtly and carefully, but that's not beyond the G-Man's ken.

That said, they won't do it. Besides the problem of converting any video game to Hollywood, Valve has made it explicit that any (male) player is supposed to be able to project himself on Gordon with minimal difficulties. Valve has explicitly said that this is why you can't see your feet and why there are no mirrors in City 17. For similar reasons, you only see the heroine of Portal briefly and in profile.

Does anyone else have issues actually watching these really HD videos on Youtube (or here) smoothly?

I'm trying this on my work PC, which is no slouch (AMD Athlon64X2 Dual core 2GHz) and a pretty new ATI PCI card... but the videos are pretty darn choppy... and yet I can watch all Quicktime HD videos with no slowdown.

Strange.

Oh, and while the look and feel of this was really nice, it demonstrates why hollywood actors are paid the big bucks... acting in any sort of way that people actually want to watch is really hard... and these guys, well, they don't have 'it'.

But technically good, just let down by the things that are needed in a 'good' film, better acting and script.
