VideoSift v3.2

VideoSift v3.2 is now operational.

This is sort of an incremental upgrade with mostly only changes to the user interface. Here are all the changes:
  1. No more Hot tab - The hotness listing is now the default view of the front page. There's a new pair of "order by" links just above the video listing that allows you to toggle between hotness and the original newness listing.
  2. Goodbye Link Partners - Our Link Partners program has been disabled as it has failed to perform as well as we would have liked, so the space it was taking up is now free and clear.
  3. Sidebar Cleaned Up - Several sidebar panels have been removed from all common areas, while others have been combined into a single panel at the top of the sidebar which continually rotates its contents
  4. Featured Comment Moved - The featured comment from the top of the page has been moved into the top of the sidebar rotation.
If you notice anything strange or it looks like we broke something, let us know. Otherwise, feel free to launch your complaints and insults here as per usual.

Thanks. The New Blog Posts is one of the panels in rotation at the top of the sidebar, in addition to Top New Comments, New Talk Posts, and Support, among others.

That's how the Hotness listing works. The functionality of the just removed Hot tab is now the default listing for the front page.

To view the old default listing for the front page, click the "Newness" link at the top of the video listing.

Brave changes. The new listing on the front is fresh.
But I don't exactly like how videos that are getting lots of views end up on the front page despite being lowly voted and/or even downvoted. More controversial videos have an advantage.

Thanks for cleaning up the sidebar.

Complaint and bug:

I don't like having the rotated sidebar panel at the top of the member's profile page. Do you think we can have page stay the same? And when I went to my profile page it called me MaxWilder in the donation solicitation.

Sarzy says...

^Agreed about the profile thing. Also, I guess we're all MaxWilder now, because it's calling me that too. And sorting by newness on the front page isn't working for me -- I keep clicking it but nothing happens.

Lurch says...

Ah, I see. I didn't know if it was supposed to show still queued videos now that hotness is integrated with the front page. Seems kindof opposed to the general philosophy of the sift since the video is effectively out of the queue now before it meets the magic 10 votes.

gwiz665 says...

When a video is promoted it shows up both "stickied" and in the list.

I don't know how exactly the "hotness" function works, but I hope there is a minimum number of votes before it gets high in the list. I mean time/numberOfVotes is relatively easy to manipulate, isn't it?

Sarzy says...

Hmmm... not sure about the hot tab being the front page. I just came back after a couple of hours to pretty much an identical front page. If the front page remains relatively stagnant like that it could get boring. And sorting by "newness" still isn't working for me; I dunno if I'm the only one.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Give the hot setting a chance to settle itself, it's effected by a lot of factors - so we need to see what being on the front page will actually do, as it will work like a feedback loop. We can then tweak it to make sure that things stay fresh.

The hotness / newness switch is having some issues - stand by.

lucky760 says...

Sorting by Newness should work now. Looks like certain browsers were having a problem with it.

The hotness algorithm can definitely be tweaked to be more fresh than it is. It's currently geared to allow something to be on page 1 for a day, but that's probably too long now.

Let's watch it and toy with it to see where the best settings should be.

Rotating sidebar topper has been removed from the member profile.

Buglet: About a minute after loading a page the font size suddenly increases. This is with Firefox 3.0rc2. Could be the browser hickupping on the CSS, could be something reloading in the background. Could be a Firefox bug (in that case disregard ).

Eklek says...

The sidebars are more straightforward now:)

As I generally have my bookmarks on the left, the image "Support VideoSift" moves under the tabs (front - blogs), aligned to the right, leaving a white space. Doesn't look nice. If the image were the size of the "S" smaller I think it would exactly fit to my window.

And apart from increasing attention for charter member support it would be nice if visitors can see more easy they can join up and contribute:)

Hey, you got unsifted into my sifted! No, you got sifted into my unsifted!

Is, uh, there any option to uh.. turn the 'less-than-tens' off again?

I promise I'll be good and rummage through the unsifted pile more often.

Edit: Durr, I can read! Sorry

rottenseed says...

let's add the ability to manually rotate between information on the sidebar panel that holds top comments, feature comments, new sift talk posts, etc...

I'm thinking like an arrow that let's you go to the next rotation and one for the previous.

agreed with hotness being unnecessary, could care less what the buzz is...
uncluttered and simple, the google way-that's the ticket!

That is why there is an option for "hotness" and "Newness", meaning you can pick you poison, I think everybody can appreciate that.

There goes my blog traffic

small thing... when i roll over "views" i get an incomprehensible collection of numbers that don't make any sense, even to 6 decimal places. I am sure you have explained it somewhere, but it is the opposite of intuitive.

"Blocked" next to a video - just to clarify . . . this means a video is not accesible in some countries?

Yep!

Not related to v3.2, but it's been explained several times. It's more diagnostic info not so much general purpose, but I'll make sure it gets added to the FAQ.
It's the votes to unique views ratio, and the format is
"votes:members_viewed (votes / members_viewed)"

kulpims says...

why don't you make newness default on front page, hotness seems to disagree with a lot of people. the thing is when one of your videos comes out of pq, it doesn't get any exposure...

another rough idea - i was thinking about a way to promote some of the older posts that are just amazing but sadly get little or no attention after a few months. my idea is that we introduce new "promoted" tab which would act much the same way as former hot tab did. each privileged member (say silver and up) would a get a chance to promote one video per day that is older than 6 months, independently of current power points system which could still be used to selfpromote, promote newer stuff and personal queue. to somehow reward sifters for promoting rare gems we could sum up the votes of videos you promoted and award a star point for every xxx votes the promoted videos got out of that exposure. that would also eliminate the need to have videos sorted by hotness on the front page as you'd get an assortment of excellent promoted videos each day in the "promoted" section

If possible, I'd like to see customizable sidebars. I love the "Videos Being Viewed Right Now" box and would like it visible all the time I also agree with having "Newness" as the default... also more Cat videos
