VideoSift 4.0 Feature Request: Star Re-Distribution

I've noticed that the stars seem to be rather unfairly distributed around here. A handful of sifters have over 1000 stars while many have only a few dozen or hundred, and the vast majority haven't even a single star to their name. Its almost as if we are split into distinct classes; the vast majority existing in a state of poverty – beggars, killers, devoid of any meaningful invocation, and resented for their burden on siftbot’s resources; a broad, hard working middle class with a respectable standard of promotion; and a brutal, unrelenting ruling class who has concentrated all the channels and stars in their greedy hands.

It is for these reasons, that we as sifters, in order to form a more perfect Sift, establish a fair and balanced top 15, insure channel tranquility, provide for a common defense against trolls, promote the general queue, and secure the blessings of Dag to our ourselves and our power points, should establish the following system of fair distribution:

0-10 stars earned in the last year: 10%
10-25 stars earned in the last year: 15%
25-50 stars earned in the last year: 25%
50-100 stars earned in the last year: 28%
250-500 stars earned in the last year: 33%
Over 500 stars earned in the last year: 35%

The stars collected from each years earnings shall then be re-distributed to those living star to star, who can hardly afford to sift a video a week. I think you will find these brackets fair and equitable, as those earning the most stars can surely afford to part with such a pittance of their yearly bounty.

Furthermore, in light of these tough times, I also move that we construct with haste a script to generate 10,000 new stars; to be sent out as a stimulus to help those in need of an increase in the size of their queues. By giving these lower-class sifters an fair start, they will have an equal chance at bringing themselves out of the sad ranks of the unsiftables, the un-starred and scarlet P's.

Star re-distribution is a good start, however, the star inequality will simply be re-built unless we fix the underlying injustice that "good" videos (as if there's such thing as a "good" video and a "bad" video) systemically receive more votes.

To correct for this bias, which reduces healthy video diversity, I propose Siftbot automatically award 9 upvotes to every video that fails to receive 10 votes.

Look, it's not like my stars have made me wealthy, so you can have as many of them as you want. Once you get to bronze diamond there really aren't any other significant perks at the higher levels anyway, so what do I need with them? It's just like money: How much do you really need? I think most people here feel the same way. After the Siftocalypse on 3/11 I didn't see people here panicking because all their votes were gone. No big whoop.

I hereby consent to star redistribution. A classless Sift would be best. Now let's go execute a monarch.

This works well for me as I've been on sabbatical. I'm not sure when I'll be back but it's only fair that I'm awarded the same as if I contributed the same as say.. kronosposeidon. I have to visit many other websites just to make ends meet you know. We weren't all born with a 500 diamond in our mouth like Dag.

Videosift as a whole is more and more splitting into two great hostile camps, into two great classes directly facing each other: the starred and the starless.

In place of the old bourgeois society, with its classes and class antagonisms, we shall have an association, in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all.

Let the starred ruling classes tremble at a Communistic revolution. The probes have nothing to lose but their chains. UNPRIVELAGED VIDEOSIFT MEMBERS OF ALL COUNTRIES, UNITE!

Good parody is lost on some I see. *promote the best Sift Talk Post I've seen in a long, long while. Let's ensure everyone gets their fair share! Viva authoritarian statism!

Though, I think your percentages are low for a fair and even distribution. Once you've made it past 100 stars, for instance, I think you should be put in a higher star bracket with no cap. And a measly 35% for 500+? That's hardly fair to those without. We should adopt a strict European model where we extract close to 70% of their star earnings.

Those who earn less than 15 stars, however, shouldn't have to share. Haven't they been through enough just by existing on this site without contributing? Surely there's some sort of conspiratorial bias that helps those who are wealthy with many stars to earn even more while those without cannot get the fair break - these underprivileged Sifters are struggling to find and sift enough videos worthy of an upvote to earn a decent star ranking.

i like to think of myself as a resident lurker. seriously, i have about five videos to my name, most of them probably dead, and i've been here almost five years now. i see stories of people here less than one year who have gold stars already. i am the voter, i can't control anything else.

i'd just like to see some compensation. is that too much to ask? I SAY IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?

Out of curiosity I was just wondering how the sift tells when we've earned are star points. For instance I've been a member for just over a year now but I'm still listed as a member only since 3-12-09, how am I counted?

On a similar note, can I get my original day of membership back. I'm shallow. (It's 5/26/08, I'm sad like that.)

Holy crap! This is GOLDEN!

Can you imagine what this website would turn into if all probies had bronze crowns?

Besides, statistics show that most sifters who didn't have to work for their stars wouldn't appreciate them.

Sociologists complain that [imstellar28's] get-rich-quick appeal undermines the American work ethic and causes a rip in the fabric of our culture.

What with [sifter] satisfaction at an all-time low, we need something to buck this dispiriting trend. And that's where [NetRunner and Arvana] come in. Because [they] prove that just being a regular 9-to-5 slob may be the way to go, after all.

Can't you see this disparity in stars is tearing us apart?

A similar sift is going on before our own eyes. Modern starred users, with its relations of sifting, of commenting and of queues, has scripted such a gigantic means of sifting like the sorcerer who is no longer able to control the power points of the nether world whom he has called up by his keyboard.

For many a fort night past, the history of the revolt of modern siftive forces against modern conditions of the Front Page, against the starred relations that are the conditions for the existence of the diamonds and of its rule. It is enough to mention the star crises that, by their periodical promotion, put the existence of the entire stars on siftqusition, each time more trollingly. In these crises, a great part not only of the existing queues, but also of the previously created sifting forces, are periodically discarded. In these crises, there breaks out an epidemic that, in all earlier epochs, would have seemed an absurdity - the epidemic of over-sifting...

The modern sifter that has sprouted from the ruins of beggar's canyon has not done away with star antagonisms. It has but established new channels, new precious metals of oppression, new threads of flaming in place of the old ones. Our epoch, the epoch of the starred, possesses, however, this distinctive feature. It has simplified star antagonisms. The Sift as a whole is more and more splitting up into two great hostile PQs, into two great PQs facing each other - the starred and the unstarred...sifter against sifter. What have we become?

SIFTING MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL QUEUES, UNITE; From each according to his stars, to each according to his PQ!
