Time to review user ratings?

Five of the top ten sifters have not posted a video in years, some as long as 7+ years.
Is it time to revisit how users are rated, perhaps by vote count over the last year or some other measure? With traffic so low lately, it's impossible to ever come near the vote counts of our top 10, no matter how many videos are submitted. No video is going to get 100+ votes anymore, today a 15 vote video usually hits #1. That makes rating users by overall vote count a poor metric, and leaves the top user list full of long inactive users.

Is it time to change the rating system, or is the semi-broken system we have now one we want to keep?

These are some totally valid points.

I reckon I'd totally be up for making some changes, especially as it relates to quality of life for those of us who still come around.

@newtboy What top users list did you have in mind?

@ant Did you have any specific updates for VS in mind? Large-scale changes probably wouldn't be doable any time soon, but we could get away with doing some smaller changes.

If anyone has any thoughts, do share!

newtboy says...

Hmmm....I'm not sure. I would really like to hear what others think, but maybe by votes in the last year....or maybe the last two years?
Maybe by number of sifted videos instead of votes?
I don't really have an answer, just a little frustration that I'm not ever going to move up even though I'm usually in the top 5 for the week....not that it really matters, it's just a ranking after all.
If no one else has any issue, it doesn't bother me enough to ask for change on my account alone. It just seemed the current list has become meaningless with so many AWOL, so I mentioned it to get an idea how people feel. Maybe I should have made it a poll?

Would be nice to be able to embed tik tok and twitter vids. A lot of the time I have to look for ages or wait a week or two for someone to post a youtube version of the content.

Another suggestion would be to put a cap on video length. I am not usually going to watch a video over 20 minutes long, which means I can't vote on it.

ant said:

VS hasn't been updated too. @lucky760 and @dag -- Are there any plans for changes and updates in the future for VS?

ant says...

Oh yes, more video hosts support. Also, VS needs to automatically find Vimeo videos' thumbnails.!

Would be great if there were additional sites we could grab videos from. The more the merrier.

Personally would not want to see a cap on length of videos. John Olivers Last Week Tonight clips generally run over twenty minutes.

I would like it if, when you validate an embed, it would also check to see if the video has been submitted before filling out the rest of the submission page. I hate that it tells me the embed is good right away, but not that it's already posted until I finish my submission.

lucky760 says...

Yeah, supporting more hosts would be great.

I wonder if TikTok and Twitter embeds are embeddable. No clue.

I don't know about capping video length though because some users don't want to watch them, as others do. IIRC we have the ability to filter out long videos. Have you given that a try?

That used to work. Maybe Vimeo changed something.

We'll have to look into that.

For other video hosts, do you have any in mind?

It actually does do that for that very reason. If it's a dupe, immediately after putting the embed in it should be showing you a red message stating as much.

If that seems broken, can you please provide an example embed where this has happened to you?

It was like that for the last several years. Facebook!

Ok, the next time it happens I'll let you know. I don't recall which recent attempts had that result offhand.
Perhaps because I'm using it on a mobile (kindle) but not using mobile VS (it's certificate is not valid) it doesn't always work right?
All I know is I check the embed and it says it's good, but then I fill out the form, hit continue, and get the red message 'this video has already been submitted' up to a few times a week. I thought that was the norm.

I've seen embeds of twitter vids, not sure about tik tok.

I usually just skip the longer vids.

Here's a feature request I have myself:

I'm very used to writing in Slack and using emotes provided there, which are also standard characters used everywhere (e.g., in SMS, etc.).

We should support short-codes for emotes, so no longer just our custom little blue faces, but actual standard emoji characters via things like 👍 which would render a thumbs-up.

Any +1s on this feature request?

newtboy says...

Yes...i could use a "facepalm" emoji. I don't know how, nor do I know a reasonable short code, but someone must.

Just use the standard emojis. Just remember that not everyone can use them so they should be optional like my over decade old PCs. If not shown and used, then VS still works and readable.

Also a minor bug for @dag and @luck760 :
Editing my own video with a new embed YT code keeps reusing the old embed YT code when VS checks.

Ok, it just happened when I tried to submit this video
https://videosift.com/video/Slayer-Reign-In-Jazz
I validated the embed, it said it was good, I filled out the submit form and submitted and boom, already submitted. I double checked by trying again, sure enough it doesn't show the red message until the end of the process.

@lucky760 This has happen to me a few times over the years. It seems to be happening with vids that have not sifted yet (pqed/unsifted vids). I just checked four videos currently on the sift ( 3 pqed, 1 unsifted) all four were said to be good to sift.

When you say "the end of the process" you mean when you press submit at the bottom of the first step, is that right?

I just reproduced that issue, so that helps. I'll try to look into that soon. Thanks!

I have wanted to post from reddit for a while. I have seen videos on there, then a week later it's posted and in the top 3 after it gets uploaded by someone to Youtube.

w1ndex says...

Also, is anyone else having problems with the bookmarklet not working in Chrome? I have 3rd party cookies enabled and I whitelisted this site but it just does the endless login when I try to submit a video. Firefox works just fine.

eric3579 says...

I don't think reddit videos can be embeded here or anywhere else. I've never seen any type of embed code.

Twitter, Tik Tok and Instagram all have embed codes for their videos, however for whatever reason they don't work on the sift

Reddit is a mess anymore with the new/old layouts, I'm sure it's something on their end that needs to be done to allow just media embeds and not the whole post.

newtboy says...

I’ve been thinking about how to rate users and had a few ideas….
First I thought it might help to incorporate comment votes, but that doesn’t really take into account the lowered traffic in the last few years and still leaves inactive members as the top.
Second I thought maybe only count votes from the last year (or two)….but that discounts the efforts of those who are still active but less so than before.

Third, and this one made sense to me, maybe rank by “golden one” and/or “silver tongue” badge level. That ignores traffic rates and rates by percentage of current votes but doesn’t ignore older poster’s contributions, it rates/ranks them. Then, people who submitted many popular videos aren’t outranked by people who submitted fewer and less popular videos but at a time when there was just more site traffic.
Just my thoughts…
