Enough, already.

Would the dead link police please stop going through my list of published videos? I've received dozens of e-mails the last few days.

It's just a website, nerds.
You don't get a free decoder ring for being on the Top 15, mmkay?
pho3n1x says...

LOL, i've gotten them too, it's a video website though, and people don't come to see dead videos. So either fix them or discard them. that's what i've been doing... you don't get a free decoder ring for staying in the top 15 list with dead videos either...

bizinichi says...

um sorry. i went on a rampage and *dead'ed a shitload of videos in the past 4 days, so it was probably me. ESPECIALLY if they were daily show/colbert report or political vids

theo47 says...

I understand the desire for working videos, but it's the nature of flash video sites for these links to disappear.

Don't get me wrong, I like the site and all; I just prefer a more hands-off participation with it.

swampgirl says...

Holy cow! It's not members here that's the problem..it's the shitheads prowling YouTube to kill our great content. We're all getting clobbered by Viacom. I've had a dozen or so deads in the last month, alone.

Well for what it's worth, I'm glad for the emails. Especially during busy times like spring when I only get a chance to sift maybe once a week.

swampgirl says...

Dead pool?

As in one could be resurrected back to our living queues once replacements are found? That would be awesome! Some of the old dead posts have great comment threads that are lost if one is just reposted.

raven says...

yeah, quit yer whining Theo, at least you've still got yer hundo star, mine keeps getting taken away from me as soon as I earn it back! Stupid money grubbling entertainment conglomerates!

wildmanBill says...

It isn't the members' fault that a vid goes dead. If someone tries to watch a video that isn't working then it gets flagged as dead. It happens to all of us, sure isn't worth whining over you nerd.

And for the first time, I think so anyway, there is a compiled playlist of dead vids. Take one look at it and the sift graveyard is freakin' vast. I've been deading some vids, not meaning to offfend anyone because it is nothing that someone should be so fragile over that they do get upset by it. The older members typically have the most dead links because the videos themselves are older and the lawyers and harpies have been reigning down on youtube for the past year.

theo47 says...

Since wildmanBill is being a vindictive little shit and is continuing to go through my submissions, I thought you'd all like to know...

He has 11 dead links.

wildmanBill says...

And I'll deal with them theo, I didn't go through your lists, I was looking at the 'Hidden From My View' playlist without even seeing who the submitter is, it's not my fault you must be a favorite on it. I was bored I saw the sift post about a dead video playlist that a member requested some dead notices on, BFD ya whiner. I think your just throwing a tantrum. I don't care if I have dead links, it's just another thing that comes up on the Sift.

joemawlma says...

I've made this suggestions somewhere else, but just in case....

Why doesn't the videosift bot just send the original poster a private message with a link to the video whenever someone declares a video as "dead"?

If someone doesn't like getting all the PMs then there should also be a user option to disable this from happening.

When videos aren't fixed within a week or two, they get deleted. It's a self cleaning videosift feature.

Hopefully this is already in the works.

raven says...

yes, I would also second a PM notice of dead vids... or maybe a link right up next to Discarded that would list all a user's current dead vids... this would save a heck of a lot of time scrolling through pages of posts looking for the dead ones... this would probably be appreciated by the 250 and up club

also, another thought related to this occurred in a PM exchange with silvercord...

what happens to goldstar member who are just over the 50 mark and have just spawned their own collective, then, within the next few days, evil lawyers smite ten of their posts in one go... do they lose their shiney new powers? And if so, what happens to the new collective and all its related vids?

choggie says...

swampgirl-yeah that too, some of the comment threads, like you say, provide the journal that may provide a definitive difference....why most gravitate tword's sub-lingual jibberish, on other sites...(guilty here, as charged m'self!)
depending on bodily fluids2 any given x's

joemawlma's is the best method, by the way, wouldn't ya'll say???

Krupo says...

I totally understand how theo feels - I have like a dozen plus deads too all of a sudden, but swampgirl. is right - the IDIOT media comapnies (WTF is up with the CANADIAN HOUSE OF IDIOT COMMONERS killing one of the VIDS. YOU WORK FOR ME YOU STUPID BITCHES- GAH!) - ah stress release. Anyway, yeah, annoying as hell. But James is also right - our links are more stable b/c they'll be fixed - yay sift. Boo idiot companies and hacks.

Until the new systems come online, I must share my method - all my siftbot e-mails skip my inbox and go straight into a gmail "Videosift" label. I then put the dead vids I want to try and fix into my inbox so I can keep track of them.

It's a kludge, but it helps me keep track of it all until a 'dead pool' of sorts comes online.

deathcow says...

I call em dead when I see them, I'll go through searches for specific topics so if someone posts a lot on one topic and they all die.. well.. should we call em dead or not? Whats PC on VS?

Farhad2000 says...

I don't try fix most of my dead links, if the video is gone it's usually the only source online.

I still don't fucking get their whole thing about media, I mean honestly Billy Holliday got removed by Viacom. As far as I know its goddamn public domain with that. Same with the rare Andy Warhol clips.

Fuck VIACOM

grspec says...

I have been looking elsewhere for the videos other than youtube becuase of the fact they are ganking videos left and right. We really could use some more services we can embed from to help offset some the youtube silliness.

swampgirl says...

You said it, grspec. The answer is more sources since the powers-that-be have essentially neutered Youtube. I rely too heavily on YT anyhow.

I received more dead emails this morning. Thanks to you guys that have emailed me a heads up before hand.

Theo, we share your frustration

silvercord says...

I invoked "dead" on 50 or so videos yesterday. It seemed to me like a good thing Eric did, even though I had to replace some vids, and an effective way to clean up the Sift in one swell foop. I figured that something like this was going to happen and dreaded it, however gold stars have the *dead function for a reason. Let's not make people the problem for pointing out the problem. There's enough of that going on in the world. The problem is dead videos.

I realize that it is frustrating to have videos disappear, but as someone pointed out to me a long time ago, "that's bitrot." Entropy at it's finest!

Also, while it's a nice courtesy to find a replacement video for those I've called *dead (and many of us do that occasionally), it's not my job to find a replacement video for someone else's video. And I don't expect them to find one for mine. They're my videos. If I fail to check my email to see if there are videos of mine flagged *dead . . . oh well. James was kind enough to grace me one time, but I don't expect it again.

That being said, I hope y'all have a greater day.

firefly says...

I've managed to fix a few, (and still looking for replacements!) but to re-iterate what grspec (and others) said: we need more embeddable hosts. LiveLeak, Brightcove, Gametrailers.com, Atom Films, JibJab, StupidVideos, theYNC, Flurl, aBum...all embed, and would make finding replacements easier.
And maybe the time limit could be upped slightly, to say, 10 days? Some people may vacation for a week, and may miss an entire chance for fixes.

eric3579 says...

My apologize to all sifters whom were negatively impacted by my list of dead videos. I assumed Because sifters have been give the ability to dead videos it was something that all sifters would do, or want done, if given the time. I have made my list private and will not dead any myself (now that I can). There are quite a few more, just to let you know.

rickegee says...

I am with silvercord. I would like to pretend that my 250+ submissions are all alive and well, but Viacom has very different ideas. You should make the list public again because it is necessary maintenance.

Zifnab says...

I'm with Firefly. I don't mind that people have marked some of my video's as dead. I try to find a replacement and in a couple cases I have only found a replacement on a host that we can't use, so I'm then forced to let it die...

looris says...

(i'm not reading the whole thread of course)

ROTFL that really happened? I never thought of that!

Though i think it's a childish thing to do, maybe it could also be seen as a "game", so i do not blame nor endorse who does that.

But, with that said, YOU are complaining about this? You, who search and downvote every family guy clip without even watching it? LOL?

I can't belive you are really complaining.

raven says...

One must come to accept the *dead as a natural completion of the sift cycle...

but really folks, can a girl get a DEAD tab on her profile so finding these and fixing them is a bit easier? I'm sick of hunting them down.

rembar says...

Raven, I made a Sift Talk post requesting just that feature, but no response yet so I can only assume they're working on it. (I'm an optimist! )

Also, I kinda feel like gold stars and above should have some extra leeway for time to find a replacement video, like maybe 12 days or 14 rather than the standard 7, just because of the fact that goldies tend to get way more deaded videos than the average user, and we have to deal with those videos way more often.

Krupo says...

I think all users should have a longer dead-recovery period.

I also think goldies/diamonds should have the ability to edit a video's "EMBED" field to fix it themselves; otherwise *undead is a pointless "gold-star-only+poster" invocation, since the poster is usually the only personal who will ever use it...
