Sorry @bareboards2, but what was your stance on the police institution again?

"If they didn't want their estranged children to be scared shitless after SWAT storms their home and detains their father for 6 hours.. they shouldn't have borrowed money from the government & likely be too poor to pay it back." Correct?

Good thing we have para-military police to protect us from these dangerous crooks.

It is so tiring to be painted with beliefs I don't hold just because I don't agree 100% with someone else's stance.

I am very confused by this whole story. First I was outraged as is everyone else, but then the broadcast ends by saying that he wasn't handcuffed and the door wasn't broken down? Somebody is lying, and they are OUTRAGEOUS lies. This happened at 6 am, and he sat in a car in front of his house for six hours! There must be neighbors! Witnesses!

If the cops are lying, that just compounds my outrage. Weiner lying about a tweet is NOTHING compared to a lie of this magnitude. Thank god for the fourth estate and a free press -- heads will roll and roll they should.

If the guy is lying, well, that makes it all kind of funny. I thought while watching it that he was entertaining -- he played that camera like a pro and was clearly having a GREAT time. And to end with his little speech about paying your student loans? This guy is priceless. If he made up the whole thing, that makes him even more entertaining. And then what does it say about our free press -- if they don't do the least bit of investigative reporting to see if he is credible. Did they talk to the neighbors to see if they had seen anything, to corroborate the story before airing it? Or were they more interested in their "exclusive" story so they can capture eyes and therefore profit from advertising dollars?

I have nothing but questions.

What a roller coaster ride this vid was for me -- outrage and amusement and wha???

GenjiKilpatricksays...

@bareboards2

Why are you incapable of addressing the context of situation?

In nearly every exchange with anyone on vs, you nitpick our literal words and avoid the issue.

" I don't agree with everything but I agree with some things. "
" You know, there's a lot here to look at and I can't draw a full conclusion. "
" I really just don't feel comfortable responding to your sincere inquiries into the logic which supports my beliefs because I had heard you wore white shoes after labor day a few years back. "

Focus on the main idea Bareboards, the buildings and rituals and uniforms and weapons and "authority" which is bestowed to nearly any mofo who's passed a GED test..

1 - Was all that stuff invented & perpetuated out of a sincere need to protect you?

2 - Do you sincerely believe that 95% of police wake up yearning to prevent every citizen, as much as possible, from being robbed or raped or murdered?

Those are simple questions you've refused to address so far. Here's your chance.

Question 1 & 2. A simple YES or NO is all that's required. You can explain later.

If you can't give a simple answer to those simple questions then you've obviously been ducking this whole time for fear of admitting to your own cognitive dissonance.

[Seriously don't even bother replying, here or in pm, if you're not gonna give a simple yes or no. Like i said, i can wait for an explanation. thanks]

2. Yes.

And I have actually already said these are my beliefs in other, private exchanges. I know I am wordy, perhaps you missed it.

I'm not nitpicking your words, I didn't even mention your words.

I look at each vid with a critical eye and look at the evidence presented. I go to other sources. I gather data. I inquire.

I don't trust anyone, actually. I question everything.

Sorry you don't like my approach. Sorry I don't share your world view. [edit] --

Don't know what it means but it sounds to me like the Stockton police are saying only that they didn't break down his door or handcuff him leaving the question of whether or not the feds did open.

Has to be a struggle between local and federal responsibility. I thought the original news cast was fair. Local police is denying (rightfully so probably) any involvement other than sending 1 patrol car and one officer. Local PD pressure likely resulted in the removal of the video from news10.

This was a DoE/Federal warrant and action. I like the story because Mr. Wright is not screaming suit, racism, etc. He just wants his door fixed! I am sure once the case is resolved the DoE will be happy to reimburse him =/

bareboards2says...

http://videosift.com/video/SWAT-Team-Raids-House-at-6-AM-for-Student-Loan-Debt

Someone else posted this vid and killed it, had the text of the news article, including these declarative sentences:

"The Office of the Inspector General has a law enforcement branch of federal agents that carry out search warrants and investigations.

Stockton Police Department said it was asked by federal agents to provide one officer and one patrol car just for a police presence when carrying out the search warrant.

Stockton police did not participate in breaking Wright's door, handcuffing him, or searching his home."

So it was the feds. And it looks like the title to this vid is incorrect -- SWAT? What SWAT?

Now I AM outraged. What the hell? It's a civil matter, a financial matter. Are banks allowed to break down doors to collect debts? Then the federal government shouldn't be allowed to break down doors.

(And the guy still is entertaining -- and he needs to go to the feds for the apology and the new door, if that is really all he wants. Maybe the ACLU will get involved and help change procedures.)

Guys, did you read the news articles? This had nothing to do with defaulted student loans, and this local newscast has been discredited. It was carried out by the office of inspector general. It appears this had more do with an investigation into embezzlement, fraud, or something of that sort. They won't give details understandably. The investigation is on going.

It may well have been a mistake, and certainly, someone should fix his door. It still doesn't mean we should go around saying the feds are going to bust down your door for defaulting on loans. What would you guys suggest for dealing with embezzlement of tax dollars? The honor system?

My fault, it's on the internet, I should just take it at face value.

LOL. Are you just trying to leverage out-of-hand, populist rage against the government to gut education funding? Hmm... I wonder what financial demographic that would benefit.

Also, I almost didn't even mention it, but DoE, at least at a federal level, usually refers to the Department of Energy.

In response to the latest title edit "California man trolls local news station?"

He was probably going by what he was told by the Federal Agents when he said it was about unpaid student loans. Does the rest of his story not jive?

Going by the warrant, it looks like his wife was running multiple financial aid scams.

She may have been just trying to take out a bunch of different loans and then stick her husband with them.

bareboards2says...

I had the same reaction to the new title. Was this guy trolling? Or was he misinformed about jurisdiction and who was doing what? Did he exaggerate a little bit (he is hysterically funny) but the essence of his story is true?

I'm still not all that comfortable with feeling like we have the whole story.... if we had all the facts, we might still think that the SWAT response was over the top for the offense. Warrants by definition are written very broadly -- how many loans are we talking about? I can't tell from the warrant. Is it one bad application? Or multiples? How much money?

When it is okay to bring in SWAT on a financial crime? From wiki: "A SWAT team is an elite tactical unit in various national law enforcement departments. They are trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside of the abilities of regular officers."

Fraudulent loan application(s?) is a "high-risk operation"? Maybe @Lawdeedaw can give us some perspective, if he's willing?

Student Loans, lessee-The government will give you $$ to pay for tuition in order for someone who has believed the lie that having a degree will enable you to get a more formidable piece of the American Daydream. They provide a reasonable amount of time for you to pay the loan back, a reasonable interest rate for the same, and reasonable penalties should one's untimely or inadequate payments not match the agreed upon methods. Bullshit.

The university system in the US is a pathetic husk of what it was prior to the 20th century. Compared to those graduating in say 1903 from ANY college or university, today's college graduates are systematically and willfully retarded by these hollow institutions. The student loan system IS fraud, IS a SCAM, run by gangsters and thieves and re-educators.

Listen to this woman run it down for all you recent, developmentally-disabled grads-

Blankfist has the right idea-Fascism is alive and thriving in the United State's broken and dying governmental experiment which, in reality is by design, nothing but a flashy new version of the same old empire. People need to organize some creative Civil or less than Civil, economic protest to show the assholes who think they still own slaves just who works to pay for them to fuck the world...and then kill these motherfuckers.

Porksandwichsays...

Makes me curious though. There's a guy out there somewhere with the same last name as me, and I get calls constantly about him living at my address and owing student loans. I mean it's been going on for years, they threaten to send process servers on the answering machine. You tell them for the 50th time that this dude is not related to me, does not live with me, and I do not know him? "Sorry sir, there's nothing we can do, the process has already started."

I wonder if some day they'll show up to bust this guy at my address because he has obviously coerced a household full of people into taking him in, putting all his bills in their name, and convinced them to lie for him for years.

And this could very well be over "student loans" how often do you hear of people using student loans to buy cars? If you had someone who was applying for student loans and used the money for other things and lied on their forms to get it....it would be embezzlement, etc but it would still involve student loans.

I know full well they can't be told anything that would make them look elsewhere or give you information into how to convince them to look elsewhere and leave you the fuck alone. So this guy was actually married to the person in question, makes his case weaker...so they broke his door down. In my case Im sure I'll get a decade of calls threatening me.

Neighbors are backing his story. "Excessive Force" now mentioned and an attorney acquired. It does seem excessive when the line regarding "Criminal contraband" was stricken through on the warrant, suggesting they had no anticipation of drugs, weapons, etc. Then why the 13 armed men?

""They surrounded the house; it was like a task force or S.W.A.T team," across the street neighbor Becky said. "They all had guns. They dragged him out in his boxer shorts, threw him to the ground and handcuffed him."

According to Becky and her two children, the raid started at 6 a.m. with agents ramming down Wright's front door.

"I watched until I went to work at 10:45 and they were still out there," Becky said.

Her young daughter, Valerie, said she counted 13 agents and one Stockton police officer outside Wright's home.

"I felt really bad for those kids," said Becky about agents when they brought out Wright's three children. "They were crying really loud.""

I'm pretty sure that was the judge that stroked through that line. It had what I assumed was his initials on the side. That just means the judge didn't give them authority to look for "Criminal contraband".

"SWAT" is probably accurate, but the government probably has some other more innocuous sounding name they call their task force.

I guess since they were looking for evidence of fraud, their reasoning for busting the door with a SWAT team was to prevent any evidence from being destroyed. The usual absurdity.

BansheeXsays...

So prior to 1960, we're on a gold standard and there is no Department of Education or federal student loans. You had to PRODUCE your own way through. And since you were producing, you FEARED losing that production by wasting it on bad schools. And since there were no loans coming from forced appropriation, the cost was not inflated to get the full loan amount.

I am a $10 an hour peon for an online university and we put 90% of our efforts into getting leads and getting those students' loan applications in and approved. We don't care what happens to you after those loans disburse. At that point you owe the government what it stole from people to give us. We've got our money. The cost of tuition is never set below the loan amount. Why would we price it at less than what the government is willing to give? The more they borrow, the higher we price it. And if the return on the investment was what the government claims, private lenders would be jumping at the chance to make these loans. But it's a huge net loser that massively benefits the "schooling" complex at the expense of society and students.

Socializing college is as stupid as socializing food and car repair. All service providers naturally want money by force, they don't want to have to worry about people spending their money in other places. It doesn't have to be another school, either. What if houses and food become so cheap that people start forgoing college because it's no longer seen as a way to faster get what they want? Then colleges would have to lower their prices to continue to be seen as a value. THIS IS HOW THE WORLD WORKS PEOPLE.
