Gotta love his enthusiasm, but he's wrong.

There ain't gonna be no revolution tonight.

People are not motivated by problems, they are motivated by solutions. That was the central failing of Occupy. They didn't introduce or even popularise the concept of "the 1% vs the 99%". We all already knew about it. We still know about it, but most people, me included, haven't a fucking clue what to do about it.

If you want to "take the right" to be heard on a topic, then do it.

Me, I have fully descended into cynicism. The problem won't get solved.

Ok. I was totally prepared to roll my eyes at Russell Brand yet again. He plays to the 'too cool for school class clown' too often. But he whipped out some content this time.
Well done!

I think the concept mentioned in the four horsemen video that just got release explained it quite well - humans have an ability to adapt to almost anything, so while it helps us progress, it also lets us endure the worst sorts of things that go on in the world with relative indifference.

Really good vid though, Brand really hit the nail on the head with his comments, and that Paxman guy is an absolute douche, essentially rolling his eyes at the end as if to say, yes the environment is being destroyed, yes, the wealth inequity is enormous, but having to listen to someone actually say it, oh how trite!!11@

enochsays...

seems this paxman dude made it to senior year government and decided "yep..no need for me to learn any more in regards to this subject.i know it all now".

either that or he is one of them political class apologists.

either way he is kind of a self-important twat.

Mammaltronsays...

Revolution most certainly will not happen. Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions worldwide, took to the streets to protest the activities of the economic rapists on Wall Street.

Net result? Rapists get their bonuses and carry on. Nothing changes.

So maybe we go all French Revolution, get the guillotines back out? Nope, the heavily militarised police forces and even the armed forces are owned by those paying the politicians. An armed revolt would be brutally shut down, because Terrorists.

Yep, we're fucked.

radxsays...

Depends on your definition of revolution, I suppose.

Look at Europe for a minute.

- The Greeks see the rise of Golden Dawn, an openly fascist party.
- Marine Le Pen's FN, an extreme right wing nationalist party, is polling at #1 in France.
- Italy got rid of Berlusconi, which for them is about as close to a revolution as you can get without massive bloodshed.
- The society in the UK has gone so unimaginably lopsided that the Red Cross is handing out food packets for the first time since the end of World War 2.
- Let's not even talk about the Hungarian government and its atrocious track record over the last years.

These are some pretty drastic changes, and rarely for the better.

As a comedic piece that was pretty good, some nice turns of phrase and a few genuine laugh out loud absurd moments.

But as a polemic it was just awful. Rambling, disjointed and mostly incoherent. If Brand is the modern day version of a revolutionary speaker, then it's no wonder we are in the situation we find ourselves in.

And to everyone criticising Paxman, clearly you are not used to watching a good political interviewer. He won't stand for nonsense or hand waving, he wants answers.

Here's the worthy-reading Letter From The Editor for the issue of The New Statesman.

Paxman is a great political interviewer in general, but his inability to take a non-voter seriously, wildly dismissing some superb points of view, as if somehow vote abstinence means that people can't have a clear concept of what's going on is fucking dumb.

I am so bored of the ancient rhetoric on democracy and voting. It doesn't even mean anything when whoever you vote for is not beholden to their manifesto in any way shape or form. They can and do change their position at any point once in power and what can we do about it? Vote against their decisions? Force them to practice what they preached? Nope! We have to suck it up. Democracy my arse.

poolcleanersays...

We don't know shit about what works and what doesn't. We just want someone that can assure the majority of people that they have the solution.

And there's NO WAY the majority of people will accept Brandy boy. I think I can lead earth better than all politicians. Would you vote for me? Hell fucking no. HAHAHA

poolcleanersays...

I think most people are this way with their learning. Enough to make the dough and serve the role. AND FUCK ANYONE OVER THAT GETS IN THE WAY -- or show enough indifference as to maintain the state that keeps them employed.

That's the joke of reality. That's the truth. There ain't nothing beyond THAT. This is it. Humanity. We'd have to split off into a colony or a faction within a faction to gain anything close to anything that is fair or Utopian. Goddamn man. Goddamn it, it's just how it works.

And then within that colony, the same indifference to change will form and the change that does come will only serve the top. Always. That's ALWAYS how it will be. Even beyond this world. Beyond humanity. There is CAUSE and there is REACTION.

Brand always reminds me of people I've known who have spent too many years smoking too much pot. Don't get me wrong, I agree with some of what he's saying and I'm all for pot, but I've heard the same kind of rambling, disjointed and allegedly mindblowing lecture many times before.

Basically he missed out on being a pretentious student thanks to addiction and now appears to be making up for lost time.

I agree with your sentiment... that said, his tactic did make for a damn entertaining interview.
