Muhammed cartoonist Lars Vilks attacked by muslims in Sweden

Was originally only http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdyKmzEdHws updated to larger embed with more context. Thanks pprt.

I encourage you to see the new bigger version, which shows quite a bit more.

I must say, these cops conducted themselves rather well.

As much as I wanted to say fuck 'em, I can't find a reason to.

Well placed short burst of pepper spray, and excellent response to the assault seen later in the video.

Although, they let that guy throw sucker punch at the perpetrator. I don't know who that guy is, but he would have been arrested to; for assault. If Sweden has laws like the US on assault.

Kreegathsays...

Whom did you say they let throw a sucker punch? It looks to me like there was a lot of commotion and the many things going on at once took a while to get a handle on. The police acted very professionally.
Then again we generally don't see them as the enemy, nor does every other citizen walk around with a conceiled weapon, so their response doesn't have to be that extreme.

TheFreaksays...

During the time I lived in Sweden the police never failed to impress me.

You get so accustomed to police in the U.S. who view every civilian as the enemy, then you encounter Swedish police who seem truely concerned with helping the public. It's culture shock to say the least.

The guy who was assaulted from the left side, at about 35-38 seconds. Then you can see the sucker punch at 45 seconds. By his body language after he threw the punch I could tell he was not a cop. No doubt the cops couldn't do much about stopping the sucker punch, and I doubt anyone really cares. It's a matter of principle, and justice is blind.

The Freak, police used to be that way in the US too. Until the war on drugs hell the war on everything. I can't remember a time when cops in the states gave a shit about rights.

It's not just sweden, it's basically everywhere that isn't the states. For whatever reason, the cops there seem to be more corrupt then the rest of the world, and that in turn garners hatred towards all police officers, much like NordlichReiter displayed here.

gharksays...

what's ironic is that the random ad that loaded for me on the right side is for a muslim dating site. Muslim singles ftw, you can join your life partner at events like these and sucker punch cartoonists happily for as long as you both shall live.

Also yes, Sweden should be very proud of their police.

by tagging this terrible, I interpret that as saying that you think the artist's work was a bad idea that shouldn't have happened. Maybe it is terrible on the level that he is instigating anger from fundie Islamic nutjobs, and in the process he is putting his life in jeapardy (wtf did he expect???), but your intent with the terrible tag was to say that this was a very negative incident that took place... correct? Not what the Terrible channel tag is for. Y'know what I'm sayin'? *nochannel *religion *controversy *islam *waronterror *fear

Like bravo, terrible is a terribly named channel. But of course, you are correct.

Some more info has been released, and it's been revealed that the person getting sucker punched was a police officer.

Apparently what broke the camel's back for the muslim audience was when they showed a clip of dutch exile-iranian gay porn in Muhammed masks.

I guess I can imagine a bunch of ultra conservative right wing Christians reacting the same way if exposed to gay Jesus on Jesus porn. Is Jesus on Jesus a thing? Because it should be.

Did you know that Sweden and Norway are countries with very, very low level of crime? That's why police is nice and doesn't beat everyone to death. They just aren't used to violence. The only crime that is committed is by immigrants like these sandniggers.

Or maybe the police conduct themselves excellently so the crime rate is so low.

Just some background information:
Vilks was speaking at a University in Uppsala. It was a lecture on his artwork, the arts and freedom of expression/speech.

Here is a more recent update on the situation and what happened. (in English)

Here is a bit more information. (In English)

Here is a link to a Swedish newspaper where you can read some more about it, it's in Swedish but there are translation services available on the Interwebs, although most of them butcher the Swedish language.

If you want me to I can do a translation of the Swedish newspaper article for you non-Swedish speaking sifters... I tried the translation tool in Chrome to see what it looks like if you use an automatic tool and it came out completely butchered (no surprise). If I do the translation myself it would be a better translation and a more correct one than the automated one so let me know.

The artist's name is Lars Vilks.
During a free speech lecture in Sweden about the limits of artistic freedom. 15 Muslims screaming “Allahu Akbar” rushed the podium, headbutted Vilks, broke his glasses and tackled him to the floor. The whole assault was caught on tape:
Vilks has been receiving death threats since he drew an image of the prophet Muhammad with a dog’s body.

Most contemporary Sunni Muslims believe that visual depictions of the prophets generally should be prohibited, and they are particularly averse to visual representations of Muhammad.

Lars Vilks said a group of about 15 people had been shouting and trying to interrupt the lecture before the incident at Uppsala University. Vilks told The Associated Press a man in the front row ran up to him and head-butted him during a lecture, breaking his glasses but leaving him uninjured. It wasn’t immediately clear what happened to the attacker.

Lars Vilks Muhammad drawings controversy:
Vilks has faced numerous threats over his controversial drawing of Muhammad with a dog’s body, but Tuesday’s incident was the first time he has been physically assaulted.

Earlier this year U.S. investigators said Vilks was the target of an alleged murder plot involving
Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself “Jihad Jane,” and who now faces life in prison. She had pleaded not guilty.

I personally find what blackjacksellac said above offensive. " Fuck all religions, with Islam and Catholicism at the top of the pile of assholery." But he has an opinion and should be allowed to express it. I'll pray for him but wont loose any sleep over his comments, or yours.

Wow. A dog.

My sympathy for this character just went to zero.

So a vulgar, talentless, slanderer of religion is what passes for an artistic crusader for free speech in Europe?

If these people weren't losing their shit over some cartoon, they would be angry at something else. The anger came first, the cartoons are simply a pretext to express it. I am not defending their behavior, but given the shitty conditions in the middle east and the rampant racism in the western world, I can almost see how someone would explode at the smallest perceived threat to their culture.

Farhad2000says...

As a Muslim I think their behaviour is pretty horrible. Part of the reason I like Ismalis is because one of the core tenants of their slightly different religious world view is that integration is key in any society they inhibit.

But at the same time I cannot say that drawing Muhammed as a dog or putting him in a gay film is really the founding corner stone of the fight towards assuring free speech. Free speech I think is better represented through efforts like Wikileaks.

But Muslims think they have been attacked in Western society for ages, to them this hasn't started from the cartoons but from decades of what they believe is western imperialist assault on their lives and societies through politics and war, though I don't say this to condone the actions of the young men above, whose disillusionment is captured succinctly by Dag's comment.

It just makes me sad people care so much about something that in the end to me and my own religious view seem like fairly trivial affairs. I long for the day we are released from the bondage of man made scripture and take the time to really explore those kinds of questions in periods of reflection and thought. Preferably on LSD.

SDGundamXsays...

I 100% agree with that point of view. You could get a similar reaction from any group of people that feel persecuted. Take for instance the Rodney King riots. The Rodney King incident was just the spark that lit the powderkeg of centuries of built-up racism and oppression.

I'm not condoning the violence in either situation at all. I'm just saying that in this instance it has much deeper causes then most "religion-made-them-do-it" Sifters are willing to admit.

Edgeman2112says...

Freedom of speech, maybe... But where is the value in this when you know beyond a shadow of a doubt people will get really, really pissed off at this? I don't think the cartoons are a good idea if someone's values are not the same as yours.

The whole thing seems very provacative, as if Lars wanted this to happen. That's just stupid.

Didn't want to step on your territory, mate. Also to avoid a dupe.

Won't really comment on the event (I was on it the MINUTE it broke because of my job), because the images speak for themselves.

I'll just add with seething irony how wonderful I think it is that the Western universities who created the modern world have become champions of censorship and stifling debate.

Farhad2000says...

Something my girl said makes sense as well, when the West is outraged about something it is allowed to do so and voice their opponion but whenever something offends another set of people they are ridiculed for expressing their view.

gwiz665says...

The muslims are perfectly welcome to voice their opinions and say they are offended. I have no issue with that at all. Anyone and everyone has freedom of speech.

You do not have the freedom to not be ridiculed for expressing it.

Attacking someone and attempting to burn down his house is not a way to "voice your opinion", it's terrorism, it's violence, it's barbaric.

I'm offended that they try to intimidate all of us, they are welcome to try and ridicule me for that, but they are not fucking welcome to beat me up or stone me.

>> ^Farhad2000:

hpqpsays...

To all the comments saying that this is more offensive provocation than a university class on the limits of free speech, may I remind you that all those muslims chose to be there, so they could get offended and let off violent steam? Nobody forced them to attend that conference. It is just another blatant attempt at stifling free speech through barbaric means, and scaring people into shutting up. Every time a person is attacked for expressing criticism of islam, it is also a message to everybody else: don't touch our religion, or else!

So remember, no matter how "vulgar" or "offensive" the artist's work was, the mulsim members of the public chose to be there, chose to see it, and then chose to go all ape-shit about it.
