There are so many things wrong in this situation

So the turkey cooker catches fire, on a wooden deck, next to oil canisters, and a propane tank. And this family of geniuses just looks at it, not knowing what to do.

At first I thought "well, at least they aren't foolish enough to put water on an oil fire". Then he brought out the hose.

I know people tend to look dumber through the video glass eye but these guys seem retarded- and I don't mean that in the pejorative way - and so should probably not be deep frying turkeys unsupervised in their group home or adult care facility.

wow they finally covered it over with a blanket... I'm glad I learnt the fire triangle at school.

and these people act like calling the firemen costs money, they are public servants and this is what they do, they put out fires...

"Is there a turkey there?"

Glad they got their priorities right.

At least two of them downvoted the hose.

Glad someone else also knew to get rid of the tank. Hold on... did he take it INTO the house?

It's stupid, but they actually called the FD, so I'm not calling it Homer stupid.

It wasn't smart to set the thing up on a wooden deck BUT they did do the right thing - call the fire department, wet the area under it, carefully cool the container without getting water in the oil, then starve the fire for oxygen. Could've done without the propane of course.

rychansays...

Agree with Alizarin. You guys are all overreacting. Ok, it wasn't the smartest place to set it up, but once it's on fire they did the right things.

They wet down the area underneath it.
They moved away all the other tanks.
They called the fire department.
They knew not to spray water all over it because it was an oil fire.
They knew it was dangerous to leave it as is, because the pedestal it was on was melting.
They successfully smothered it with a wet carpet.

The initial situation was ripe for disaster but they did reasonable things.

You guys are all so busy making fun of them...

Looks to me they did things right.

A) they used water to "cool" the oil not to spray on it.
b) they covered the fire.
c) they called for help.
d) they removed the propane tank

Now whats so wrong with that ?

It's not universal, but in a lot of places they will actually bill you, and that stuff is not cheap. Doesn't mean you shouldn't call them, naturally. It's still better than the alternatives.

Every year I plan on deep frying a turkey but every year I also have to imagine the consequences of having five gallons of boiling oil on a flimsy tripod over an open flame. They do taste damn good though.

I want to hang out with these people and randomly set things on fire, just to watch them lose it.
Nomino, you've given us three fine EIA videos today. Good job.

Thank you for the kind words. I've put one more up waiting to get sifted...

I am SOOoOOo disappointed by this video. Surely, I thought he was going to spray down the vat of oil. That would have been awesome. But seeing how they couldn't find an extinguisher, I thought the hose was a good idea. You can spray down the deck to protect your wood from burning and when the oil finally does spill forth molten burning goodness, you can spray it away from the house and over the edge of the deck.

Now I think it was bat-shit insane to spray water on to the vat of oil or on to the blanket. And some kid was walking around with the freaking pot lid, why was that not used???

biminimsays...

I'm not about to give them much credit. For one, they vetoed the baking soda idea. For another, they didn't have a fire extinguisher handy. Third, they kept the propane nearby. Fourth, they set the thing up on a wooden deck. Fifth, the hose--he could have made a big, life-altering mistake. You don't get many points from me for pulling a victory out of the jaws of defeat because you were so stupid in the first place.
