The difference a laugh track makes

"Scenes from a WKRP episode in two different soundtracks: the original, "unsweetened" soundtrack with only live responses, and the final broacast version which adds laughter in some spots and in one case eliminates audience applause."

Honestly.

Laugh tracks are 40 percent why I do not watch television.

That 70s show was the last straw for me when I was a teen. It is so fake, you can tell it is fake, if you have to add a laugh track, obviously its not funny in the first place, why do we need reassurance someone else finds it funny ?

FUCK I HATE LAUGH TRAXX ! ! ! !

Unfortunately, they use them because they work. People think sh1t's funnier with the laugh track.

And I do mean sh1t. (hahahahahahahaha)

People watch television, not to think, but to unwind and feel satisfied.
If the laughter is canned, the satisfaction is real.

If a show has a laugh track, I simply cannot enjoy it. It feels so forced and fake. I really want to like The Big Bang Theory, but that annoying laugh track absolutely ruins it for me. The old, tired sitcom formula of "line, line, joke, laugh track" needs to go away.

Shows like Flight of the Conchords, The Office, Louie, Wilfred, and Modern Family, to name a few, have proven that you don't need to rely on a shitty laugh track to get your jokes across. I think that a laugh track is actually a crutch for average writing and delivery.

I watched the episode of The Big Bang Theory with Summer Glau and laugh tracks was one big reason why I can't stand them anymore.
On a side note, Loni Anderson may be the official bombshell of WKRP, but I still liked Jan Smithers as Bailey.

The Simpsons has no laugh track. Amazing that nobody named it yet. I think it was the first US comedy in a long time not to use one. Maybe they got away with that because it's animated, though the Flintstones did have a laugh track. Similarly, other modern animated series don't use laugh tracks (American Dad, Family Guy, Ren and Stimpy, etc.).

Also MASH banned the laugh track from the operating room in a compromise between the show makers (who wanted no laugh track at all) and the network, who insisted on it for all other scenes.

The "Ripping Yarns" DVD set comes with an optional sound track with out laugh track. I thought I would prefer the pure version, but I must (grudgingly) admit that that show seems funnier with the laugh track. It has occurred to me that "Curb Your Enthusiasm" might actually seem funnier with a laugh track, but still I am glad they don't use one--more integrity.

Ah yes, the old Jennifer vs. Bailey debate--second only to the eternal Mary Ann vs Ginger. I saw this coming as I watched the clip, which gives equal time to both (for a change). I too am a solid Bailey man from way back. (I also come down on the Mary-Ann side, for what it's worth.)

I purchased the Monty Python's Flying Circus box set, and was irritated to no end by the apparent laugh track.
Some reviews mentioned that all the laughs were genuine audience laughter, though I wonder how that was achieved for certain outdoor segments (shown on a screen to the audience?).

Quboidsays...

There was a web-series of Have I Got News For You with no studio audience. In one episode they used a laugh track and in another they didn't. I wanted to like the no-laugh one more, but it felt wrong. However, the with-laugh one sounded forced. This shows the problem, fake laugh tracks sound out of place, no laughing sounds sounds awkward. Real studio audiences like British panel shows have (unless they're tricking me!) are the best, when suitable. For this reason, my preference is:

1) Proper studio audience.
2) No laugh track.
3) Laugh track.

I can understand why producers use it. Laughing is very much a group thing and laughter is somewhat infectious - it's not about telling you when it laugh, but subconsciously making watching a TV program more of a social thing even to people watching on their own.

Canned laughter is the outsourcing of our sense of humor.>> ^Trancecoach:
