I know you'd like to characterize anyone with a few conservative values as one of these, but i can assure you that if i walked out to Five Points, amidst the "CHANGE We Can Believe In" shirts, and started asking questions about Obama, you'd get worse answers than these. If they're saying "we need change" that's accurate even if it is just a slogan. This guy was in a crowd of republicans getting lambasted by bigotry and plain falsehoods and refusal to face contradictory statements - I'm sure it's out there but you'd be hard pressed to find that crowd of democrats. I grew up around conservatives like this and they're incapable of questioning their beliefs because they were taught from a young age that they're not allowed to question the established order. There are republicans who have thought out reasons for supporting people like McCain/Palin but they won't tell you those reasons on camera because it's purely narcissistic (wealth seeking at the expense of others) and they'd come off as evil. Liberals can follow blindly but if they do it's just laziness - by definition they're not told from a young age they have to believe anything other than you have a right to certain freedoms and try respect others. Read George Lakoff's book Moral Politics if you find this as interesting as I do.

Also the point of asking when they'd heard of Palin was to try to get them to consider that they might be putting someone very questionable up for 2nd in line to the president when they just met her.... and of course recording their acrobatics as they try to avoid the issue.

It's long past time for the states to split.

One of the biggest differences that I know of between liberals and cons is that the liberals actually try to keep reliably informed whereas the cons are always too lazy to make the effort.

I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment. A very small percentage of the voting public are fully up to speed on both sides of the debate, on all issues, on everything each candidate has said.

The McCain/Palin CAMPAIGN is spreading this stuff, THEY are saying 'is he qualified', 'what do you know about his experience'. When the campaign is using these lines as part of their campaign and speeches, you just need to see if people are swallowing the bs whole without questioning it.

I'm not sure what parts of Obama's campaign you could do the same with really? Any suggestions? McCain is playing a much dirtier, much nastier campaign based on bs, so if the supporters are eating it up, you have to show them they're eating crap.

I canvas for Obama in Indiana. Its hard not to put people like these folks on the defensive. Many are not supporting McCain because of his policies, so you can immediately throw people on the defensive even talking about policies. And don't question devotion to Palin; its emotional, not intellectual. Many despise politicians, and don't see her as one, so combine that with her folksiness and you get an emotional devotion.

Out canvasing I typically describe how I first liked Obama because of his work with a Republican Senator on transparency-in-government legislation (a 'small government' agenda), and how often he notes how important transparency will be in his administration, as he's a Constitution super-fan. I then ask what issue are most important to them and present Obama's plan or stance on that issue.

My problem with the moron's on the Obama side are that the assume all people voting for McCain are moron's who want to "lynch a n***er". It's the morons on both sides that make me so apathetic towards voting. This is why I turned in a blank ballot last time. Maybe this time around I'll vote on idealism, but I have a hard time ignoring that it seems like I'm voting for either two varied sets of corporations and special interests groups.

He isn't trying to incite our violent tendencies. If anything, he's trying to cool them, and get us to understand that disagreements about policies should not prevent us from getting along.

McCain is sending out Palin and his other surrogates to tell people that Obama is risky, unknown, dangerous, hates America, hates its values, and may be involved in violence against our government. That's not subtle. That's not a dog whistle, it's a fog horn.

These two parties are not being run by the same kinds of people. They're not equally evil -- they're not even remotely in the same category.
