The Difficulties of Mormon Dating

Elna Baker tells a great story about trying to meet guys when you’re a Mormon who is waiting until marriage.

Stormin mormon.

It's interesting as faith perpetuate segregation and the creation of "slums" for lack of a better word. Together we are strong and dumb, apart we are weak and smart.

What's with the camera man fidgeting with the camera throughout the entire video?

Anyway, this story works on multiple levels, illustrating how the "costume" of religion is revealed in its TOTAL ABSURDITY once you're capable of perceiving it objectively, for the degrading charade that it truly is.

"Just so you know, never make a deal with god"

I would go ahead and make that statement a bit broader:
"Just so you know, never make a deal with figments of your imagination"

I love her reaction to the 'person with the crazy laugh' in the audience (there's always one of those...). All at once she holds her hands in front of her face to protect herself from the shriek of someone in the audience obviously giving birth or something similar.

As a former Mormon, I can attest to how true this is. Those posters for the dance are literally things my Mom made and continues to make.

Funny to me is that at her lowest point, she says I just had to 'let it all go...not the Mormon part, just the deal with God.' I think the 35-yr old virgin in a duck costume doing the electric slide is reality saying "this is what you signed up for, don't look at me."

So much anger on the Sift.. she's funny, that's a good show and a helluva comic. She has a future. Relax about the religion thing.
Christ.

So you didn't get the feeling that she's kind of wasting her life just because of her religion? (Emphasis on "kind of". Clearly she can do and achieve lots of things that her religion doesn't restrict...)

She's obviously an awesome girl but damn...

Because she's not having sex? I think her strict enforcement of the no sex before marriage rule works in her favor when it comes to choosing a good husband.

^ It's not just the sex thing that makes us sad for people like this. It's that SO much of their life is controlled by ridiculous rules that are based on just... lies, just things that people made up that they think would help control people and make them better... She keeps saying that she made a deal with 'god'... even if there was some deity, these rules are NOT HIS/HERS, they aren't! They are things written by MEN with agendas.

So they follow all these rules and regulations and DON'T do things purely based on following things that even they know are nonsensical... and yet they continue to because to no would mean admitting that what they grew up believing to be true is... well... false. That's a hard thing to do, so instead you hang around with those of the same set of beliefs so it's easier to continue to believe because you're not being challenged, and you shelter yourself away from 'temptation'.

Upvote because she is a great storyteller, but it makes me sad to see someone who seems to be pretty together, just follow these words not because you've had a good THINK about what you believe might be the best way to live, but just because... that's what you've been told is the way.

Sad.
